  • Even if the exploitation of copper slag produced during the smelting process of copper as aggregate for construction purpose has been permitted since 2004 in Korea, the lack of sufficient data enabling to evaluate its long-term stability that is its durability has to date impeded its application. This study intends to investigate experimentally the durability characteristics of 18 and 27 MPa-class commercial concretes in which natural sand (fine aggregates) has been partially replaced by copper slag through accelerated and exposure tests so as to provide bases promoting the application of copper slag concrete. The experimental results revealed insignificant difference of the durability characteristics in most of the mix proportions in which 30% of natural sand was replaced by copper slag. In the case where crushed sand was adopted, tests verified similar characteristics for replacement ratio of 50%. Particularly, the results of the exposure test conducted during 8 years demonstrated that equivalent level of durability was secured compared to the case using natural sand. In the case of 18MPa-class lower grade concrete, exposure test verified also that the physical lifetime similar to 50 years could be secured until carbonation reaches cover depth of 20 mm.

  • Application of organic resources to agricultural land can increase crop yield by improving soil characteristics. The objective of this study was to evaluate effect of crop yield and soil physical properties including aggregate stability to application of organic resources in upland. The soybean was cultivated in a sandy loam field and a clay loam field located at Suwon and a sandy loam field located at Pyeongchang. The organic resources used in this study were rice straw compost (RSC), composted pig manure with sawdust (CPIG), composted poultry manure with sawdust (CPM), and cocopeat applied before sowing crop. Application rate of organic resources was determined based on carbon content and water content. The inorganic fertilizers were applied based on soil testing. In addition, the decomposition of RSC, CPIG, and cocopeat was characterized by isothermal incubation with sandy loam soil. The decomposition rate was highest for RSC followed by CPIG and cocopeat. Organic resource application increased yield of soybean, which effect was greater in clay loam than in sandy loam. In addition, increase in gas phase proportion by organic resource application was distinct in clay loam soil compared with sandy loam soil. In terms of aggregate stability, increasing effect was more obvious in sandy loam soils than in a clay loam soil. The highest yield was observed in RSC treatment plots for all the fields. Improvement of soybean yield and soil physical characteristics by cocopeat was not as much as that of the other organic resources. The results implied that RSC could be recommended for promoting aggregate stability and crop yield in upland cultivation.

  • This study was aimed at finding out the effect of soil conditioners on soil structural properties, soil water movements and soil losses. Sandy loam and silt loam soils were treated with two different kinds of soil conditioners, hydrophobic Bitumen 0.4% or hydrophilic Uresol 0.6%, and then various physical characteristics of the treated and untreated aggregates were determined. The results are summarized as follows: 1. By the soil conditioner treatment, Bitumen 0.4% or Uresol 0.6%, the aggregate stability was increased to 1.650-3.450 as compared to 0.275-0.417 of untreated soil and the sedimented bulk density was decreased. 2. Air-water permeability ratio of sandy loam was decreased to 2.2 by Uresol treatment as compared to untreated soil 3.8. In case of silt loam, it was decreased to 6.9 and 5.3 by Bitumen and Uresol treatment as compared to untreated 9.4, and water permeability of treated soil continued high value for 40 days. 3. Air-water permeability ratio was sharply enhanced as the structure instability index increased, but the ratio increased very smoothy after the index over 1. 4. The soil moisture retention was increased 2 to 6% by Uresol treatment, but it was decreased 1 to 3% by Bitumen treatment.

  • Use of polymeric soil amendments is an emerging way to reduce soil erosion, and improve crop productivity and soil quality. Objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of anionic polyacrylamide (PAM) and synthetic biopolymer on soil erosion, crop growth and soil quality. The aqueous solutions of PAM and biopolymer at 40 kg/ha were applied to loamy soil plots (3 m width by 18 m long) having a 20% slope during radish (Raphanus sativus) cultivation. Results showed that PAM and biopolymer treatments increased aggregate stability up to 11% compared to the untreated control. Treatments of PAM and biopolymer also increased leaf length of radish but there was no significant difference in crop yield. Soil loss was decreased by up to 41% using the polymeric soil amendments; however, no difference in runoff was found, compared to the untreated control. Soil loss was logarithmically increased against an increase in rainfall intensity ($R^2=0.85$). Our findings suggest that proper use of polymeric soil amendments would be beneficial to maintain soil quality and reduce soil erosion in sloping uplands.

  • Steel industry produces many by-products and wastes such as blast furnace slag, electric arc furnace slag, and converter slag. As in the case of rock, the main component of steel slag are CaO and $SiO_2$ ; further, steel slag is as alkaline as portland cement or concrete. Electric arc furnace oxidizing slag is possible to use as an aggregate for concrete ; however, it has been reclaimed because of it's expansibility caused by free CaO. Recently, a innovative rapid cooling method for melting steel slag has been developed in Korea, which reduces free lime content to minimum level and increases the stability of iron oxide. Therefore, this study describes the results of a series of research to utilize globular shape of electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregates made by rapidly cooled method for the construction industry by cooling rapidly melted slag from the steel industry. First of all, an experiment was carried out to investigate the quality characteristics of rapidly cooled electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregates in order to determine whether they can be applied to the construction industry. Then, by applying them to concrete of various particle sizes, we explored experimentally the desired condition to apply rapidly cooled electric arc furnace oxidizing slag fine aggregates to concrete.

  • This study is aimed to derive the optimum mix proportion of the combined self compacting concrete according to cement types (blast-furnace slag cement and belite cement) and to propose the basic data to field construction work after evaluating the quality properties. Specially, lime stone powder (LSP) as binder and viscosity agent are used in the combined self compacting concrete because slurry wall of an underground LNG storage tank should be kept stability of quality during concrete working. Replacement ratio of LSP is determined by confined water ratio test and main design factors including fine aggregate ratio ($S_r$), coarse aggregate ratio ($G_v$) and water-cement ratio (W/C) are selected. Also, quality properties including setting time, bleeding content, shortening depth and hydration heat on the optimum mix proportion of the combined self compacting concrete according to cement type are compared and analyzed. As test results, the optimum mix proportion of the combined self compacting concrete according to cement type is as followings. 1) Slag cement type-replacement ratio of LSP 13.5%, $S_r$ 47% and W/C 41%. 2) Belite cement type-replacement ratio of LSP 42.7%, Sr 43% and W/C 51%. But optimum coarse aggregate ratio is 53% regardless of cement types. Also, as test results regarding setting time, bleeding content, shortening depth and hydration heat of the combined self compacting concrete by cement type, belite cement type is most stable in the quality properties and is to apply the actual construction work.

  • In this study, EMP shielding performance was evaluated using electric furnace oxidized slag to give EMP shielding performance to concrete among the most used materials in construction sites. As a result of the evaluation, the component of the electric furnace oxidation slag was found to have an Fe2O3 content of 34%, and it was also found to contain an MgO component of about 4.8%. In addition, as a result of conducting an aggregate stability evaluation due to concerns about expansion due to MgO components, it is considered to be suitable for the KS standard. EMP shielding performance evaluation result showed that there was no correlation in EMP shielding performance according to compressive strength, and that general aggregates did not have EMP shielding. However, it was found that the aggregate using the furnace oxidized slag had excellent EMP shielding performance, and the shielding performance improved as the thickness increased. As a result of the durability evaluation, it was found that the EMP shielding concrete has the durability of abortion compared to the general concrete. Through this, it is thought that it will be good to improve the shielding rate if concrete is manufactured using electric furnace oxide slag when constructing EMP shielding structures in the future.

  • This study was designed to gain practical data on the use of soil conditioners for more efficient water managements and to establish the optimum levels of structural properties for soil conditioning. A sandy loam and a silt loam soil were each treated with two different soil conditioners, hydrophobic Bitumen or hydrophilic Uresol. The perspex tube 34 cm long were packed homogeneously with air dried soil up to 2 cm below the top, then covered over 2 cm of treated or untreated aggregates. The infiltration rate into the soil columns was measured under simulated rainfall condition. The evaporation study was carried out in the wind tunnel, and the changes of soil moisture distribution of the columns following and during the evaporation were determined by a gamma ray scanner. The infiltration rate of water into the soil column was increased to 18.7-50.8% by the Uresol treatment but it was decreased to less than 25% of control by the Bitumen treatment. Evaporation was decreased to 22.0-68.1% by the Bitumen treatment and to 38.7-68.4% by the Uresol treatment. The water use efficiency of Uresol treated column was increased to more than twice as much as that of untreated soil. Aggregate stability and wetting angle were related to water infiltration and evaporation. A positive and highly significant logarismic relationship was found between the infiltration rate and stability index-wetting angle, evaporation rate and instability index-wetting angle. It was considered that the structural stability is more important than wetting angle. This is true because the structural stability is always positively correlated to water saving, however wettability is positively correlated to the infiltration, and negatively correlated to water saving during the evaporation.

  • An amphiphilic cationic branched methoxy poly (ethylene glycol)-branched polyethylenimine - poly(L-phenylalanine) (mPEG-bPEI-pPhe) block copolymer was successfully synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of N-carboxyanhydride of L-phenylalanine (Phe-NCA) with mPEG-bPEI for the preparation of more stable polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) included a hydrophobic interaction. mPEG-bPEI was firstly prepared by the coupling of mPEG and bPEI using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HMDI). The structural properties of mPEG-bPEI-pPhe copolymers were confirmed by $^1H$ NMR. The copolymers exhibited a self-assemble behavior in water above critical aggregate concentration (CAC) in the range of 0.01-0.14 g/L. The CAC of copolymers obviously depended on the hydrophobic block content in the copolymers (the value decreased with the increase of the pPhe block content). The cationic copolymers have the ability to form multi-interaction complex (MIC) with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and plasmid DNA through multi-interaction (electrostatic and hydrophobic interaction). The physicochemical characterization of the complex was carried out by the measurement of zeta potential and particle size. Their zeta-potentials were positive (approximately +10 mV) and their sizes decreased with increasing pPhe contents in the copolymers (PPF/BSA wt% ratio = 2). The complex showed good stability at high ionic strength. Therefore, mPEG-bPEI-pPhe block copolymer was considered as a potential material to enhance the stability of complex including biotherapuetic drugs.

  • In this work, effect of antistrip additives to reduce moisture damage of asphalt mixture were studied. Asphalt antistripping agents were prepared by condensation of formaldehyde with tetraethylene pentamine (TEPA), triethylenetetramine (TETA) and bis(hexamethylene)-triamine (BHMT), respectively. And also the metal type antistripping agent was prepatred by neutralization of stearic acid or palmitic acid with metal hydroxide. Mechanical characteristics of the asphalt mixture added antistripping agent were evaluated with Marshall stability, submerging residuals and coating rate. It was found that antistripping agent prepared in this study reduced moisture damages of asphalt mixtures. In particular, asphalt mixtures added BHMT and C/S (Calcium stearate hydroxide) antistripping agent showed highest submerging and coating rate. Because BHMT and C/S type antistripping agent was to improve bonding between asphalt and aggregate owing to increase of amine concentration and role of metal surfactant.
