  • The purpose of this study is to clarify the real causes of gender wage differentials in Korea by analyzing changes over the period from 1984 to 1999. The participation rate of women in the Korean labor force has gradually increased since 1963, reaching 47.4 percent as of 1999. This increase can be attributed to more active participation by women of all ages, except those aged 15-19, as a result of their enrollment in higher level education. In particular, a remarkable rise in labor market participation was achieved by those aged 25-29. On the other hand, the ratio of female workers earnings to that of male workers has increased from 45.1 percent in 1972 to 63.1 percent in 1999. However, when the gender wage differentials are decomposed into various factors, it is found that discrimination components against female workers, compared to the skills or productivity characteristics, played a greater role for the 1994 to 1999 period.

  • Purpose: Even though the incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) has increased in Korea, the colorectal cancer screening (CRCS) is lower than that of other cancer screenings. The purpose of this study was to identify CRCS rate and to predict factors in blue-color workers. Methods: A descriptive survey design was employed. Data were collected with 327 workers, recruited from 32 companies, aged 40 and over using questionnaire from August 2010 to January 2011. Collected information included CRCS, demographic characteristics, job characteristics, health behaviors, and interpersonal relationship. The definition of CRCS included fecal occult blood test (FOBT), colonoscopy, or double contrast barium enema (DCBE). Results: Among 94 workers receiving CRCS, workers having FOBT were 37, colonoscopy were 28, and DCBE was 6 in the past. Workers who aged over 50 (OR=2.30, 95% CI=1.11-4.77), middle school educated (OR=0.30, 95% CI=0.14-0.65), less working hours (OR=0.98, 95% CI=0.96- 0.99), and had family members who carried out regular cancer screening (OR=1.89, 95% CI=1.01-3.55) were more likely to perform CRCS. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the information and notice about CRCS to increase screening uptake, providing the accessible screening method, and involving company administrators or health managers might be useful to increase the CRCS rate in workers.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the factors influencing of separation and the time of separation for middle and old aged self-employed workers. The cox proportional hazards model was used in the first survey of KLoSA, 684 persons who were over 40 years old in 2006, using data up to the 5th period of 2014. The main findings of this study are as follows. First, the average duration of job for middle and old aged self-employed workers in 2005 was 15.5years. Of the total 684 workers, 214(31.3%) person was found to have lost their job during survey period. Second, gender, age at start up, and education level have significant effects on job separation of them. When women, when they were older at start up, when they were graduate the university or higher, increased their risk of leaving their businesses. Third, in the characteristic of their work, the type of job and job satisfaction were found to affect to job desertion. When people are engaged in accommodation and food business rather than agriculture and forestry fishery, when the satisfaction of the work is lower, the risk was high. Based on these conlusions, the following implications are suggested. First, it is necessary to establish a support strategy for female middle-aged and old self-employed and older workers who start their own business after their 60s. Second, it is necessary to support them to enter into various fields by utilizing their own aptitude and experience rather than establishing them in industries with low entry barriers. Third, it is necessary to develop policies to help improve job satisfaction in the working environment. In particular, it is necessary to ensure that high educated self-employed workers are satisfied with various compensations by self-employed.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate whether the stress caused by day/night shifts on industrial workers can be affected through nutritional status. A sample of 573 female industrial workers, aged 17 through 23 years, from 4 different industries (2 in normal, 2 in 3 shift work pattern) were surveyed by questionaire examining their nutritional status, food intake, dietary habit, sleep complaint, performance of digestive organs, and degree of fatigue. Shift workers were surveyed during night work. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Sleep complaints and degree of fatigue in shift workers were higher than normal workers, whereas the performance of digestive organs were as lower than normal workers. These results showed that shift workers were more stressed than normal workers. 2. The workers who were surveyed were all poor in nutritional status. The intakes of calorie, protein, Ca, riboflavin, and ascorbic acid were lower than Korean Recommanded Dietary Allowences (RDA). Dietary habit of the shift workers was irregular. 3. There was a negative correlation between nutritional status and degrss of fatigue. The intakes of energy nutrients, ascorbic acid, and niain were significantly related to the degree of fatigue in which protein intake was found to be most influential. Among workers with the same level of protein intake, shift workers showed higher degree of fatigue. When the protein intake of shift workers was 100-125% of R.D.A., they showed the same degree of fatigue to the average normal workers.

The participants were 288 middle-aged, male office workers, and the data were collected from 14 October to 30 November, 2016, through questionnaires. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics and Pearson's correlations using PASW 21.0, while the AMOS 18.0 program was used for structural equation modeling (SEM), and the fitness of the final model was determined using RMSEA .05, GFI .98, AGFI .94 and NFI .96. The results of this study can be summarized as follows. There were correlations between family support, social support, workplace spirituality, and QOL for the middle-aged, male office workers. Second, family support (${\beta}=.60$, p<.001) and social support (${\beta}=.47$, p<.001) had a direct effect on their workplace spirituality. Third, family support had direct (${\beta}=.12$, p=.002) and indirect (${\beta}=.10$, p<.001), while social support also had direct (${\beta}=.12$, p<.001) and indirect (${\beta}=.08$, p<.001) effects on their QOL. The findings also suggested that workplace spirituality had a partial mediating effect between the family support, social support, and QOL of the middle-aged, male office workers.

The elderly workers were more likely to have lower level of education and income than the non-elderly workers. They also reported less support from colleagues and managers, however, have more decision authority. Among the elderly workers, long working hours, awkward posture, physical environmental risks, quantitative demand, decision authority, social support, age discrimination, education level, and income level were significant predictors of subjective health status or mental health. Conclusion: For keeping elderly workers healthy and productive, work environment needs to become more age-friendly. An age-friendly workplace may include: accommodative support, workers' participation, minimization of environment risk, etc.
