  • As a part of the movement of natural resources conservation, there have been doing many recycling research works for obsolete aged tire, wasted plastic materials, etc. The purpose of this experimental study is to develop glass concrete by recycling wasted glasses as a cementitious constituent in concrete. First of all, the optimum replacement ratio of powdered waste glasses(PWG) can be determined through pilot compressive strength test on normal and high strength concrete cylinders, which have been made in various mix proportions by changing the replacement ratio of PWG. Then, further tests have been done to figure out mechanical properties of most desirable glass concrete with optimum replacement ratio of PWG, such as static modulus of elasticity, compressive and tensile strengths, flexural strength. On the other hand, the alkali-silica reactions by the mortar-bar method(KS F 2546) have been experimentally doing in various grain sizes of PWG, since the alkali in the cement has a tendency to react with the silica in the PWG. In can be confirmed from the test that glass concrete can have better workability than concrete with silica fume, and they are alike in compressive strength. It is concluded that wasted glasses can be used as pratical additives for economic and environmentally friendly concrete.

  • As the average age of the general population increases, a growing number of elderly patients are presenting for cardiac operations. Although aortic valve replacement in patients aged 80 years and older has been shown to have excellent outcomes with good long-term survival rates, some physicians are still hesitant to refer elderly patients for surgical intervention. A 95-years old female was admitted to our hospital with cardiogenic shock and an emergency operation was required. She was successfully treated with emergency aortic valve replacement. We report here on a case of successful emergency surgical treatment for aortic stenosis in a 95 years old woman.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and periodontal disease in postmenopausal women using data from the 4th and 5th Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. A total of 5,482 postmenopausal women aged 45~75 years were included as study subjects in the final analysis. The HRT group comprised 1,035 postmenopausal women who had received HRT for at least one month, and the non-HRT group comprised 4,447 postmenopausal women who did not receive HRT. The chi-square test was used to confirm the bivariate relationship between the variables. Multinomial logistic regression analysis was used to adjust for covariance (age, education, family income, body mass index, age of menopause, alcohol, smoking, dental visit <1 per year, use of oral care products, and frequency of tooth brushing per day). After adjusting for all covariates, HRT was found to be associated with periodontal disease. In particular, the relationship between HRT and periodontal disease was more evident in older women and women younger than 45 years of menopausal age. The relationship between HRT and periodontal disease was stronger in women who brushed their teeth less than 3 times per day, women without regular oral examination, and women who did not use oral hygiene products. The results of this study confirmed the importance of actively considering hormone therapy when determining policy recommendations for postmenopausal women. Especially, health programs such as HRT, regular dental examination, and oral care are needed for older women who have undergone premature menopause.

  • This paper presents an evaluation of engineering properties in TDFA(Tire Derived Fuel Ash)- based concrete in early age. Concrete containing 0.5 of w/b(water to binder) ratio and 20% of FA(Fly Ash) replacement ratio are prepared, and FA content are replaced with TDFA from 3% to 12% for evaluating the effect of TDFA on fresh and hardened concrete properties. With higher than 6% of TDFA replacement ratio, workability is significantly worsened but it is improved with more SP(Super plasticizer) and AE(Air Entrainer) agent. Concrete with 6~12% of TDFA shows reasonable strength development and better resistance to carbonation and chloride attack in spite of early-aged condition. However concrete with 6% TDFA shows poor resistance to freezing and thawing action due to insufficient air content. If air content and workability are obtained, replacement of TDFA to 12% can be used for concrete with FA.

  • This study examined the customers' perception on Home Meal Replacement (HMR) products. Specifically, there were three research objectives: 1. to identify the customers' HMR purchase patterns and preference of HMR product development; 2. to identify the attributes of the HMR products that the customers perceive; and 3. to examine the customers' level of expectation-confirmation toward HMR product attributes according to the demographic characteristics. This study employed a self-administered survey that was distributed online from November 21~24, 2017. The sample of the study was the customers who had purchased HMR products in the six months prior to taking the survey. A total of 553 respondents completed the survey, which was used for data analysis. The results revealed the customers' HMR purchase patterns. The major HMR product type of purchase was ready to heat (52.6%), while the main reason for purchasing HMR products was convenience (83.2%). For the differences in the level of expectation-confirmation toward HMR products in accordance with the demographic characteristics of customers, the results indicated that there was a difference in the expectation-confirmation level according to age, whereas the respondents aged 29 and under showed a significantly higher level of time-saving for the preparation and ease of cooking (P<0.05) than the other age groups. In addition, there was a significant difference in the expectation-confirmation level for saving meal preparation time (P<0.05) and convenience (P<0.01) among the customer's occupation. These findings can provide the basis for a strategy for developing HMR products reflecting the rapidly changing customers' needs. HMR products should be developed according to the specific target market, as the study indicated that the respective customer segmentation resulted in a difference in their expectation toward HMR products.
