Effect of Under and Over Refractive Correction on Visual Acuity Performance using Two Different Charts

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of under and over refractive correction on visual acuity performance and the variation of the visual performance measurement using two different visual acuity charts. Methods: Ten young adults, aged between 19 and 25 years old, were recruited. Inclusion criteria: no history of ocular injury or pathology with a best-corrected visual acuity of 6/6 on dominant eye. The over and under refractive corrections were induced using minus and plus spherical ophthalmic lenses in 0.50 D steps up to 3.00 D; as well as using three axis orientations of cylindrical ophthalmic lenses ($45^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$ and $180^{\circ}$) in 0.50 D steps. The variation of visual acuity performance measurements was investigated using Bailey-Lovie LogMAR chart and Landolt C chart. Results: The visual acuity changes with lenses were significantly different between two charts [F = 49.15, p < 0.05 with plus spherical ophthalmic lenses and F = 174.38, p < 0.05 with minus spherical ophthalmic lenses]. The visual acuity changes with three different cylindrical axis showed no significant difference between Bailey-Lovie LogMAR chart [F = 2.35, p > 0.05] and Landolt C chart [F = 3.12, p = 0.05]. Conclusions: The over and under refractive correction affected the visual acuity performance differently. The Landolt C chart and Bailey-Lovie LogMAR chart demonstrated variation in measurements.

노인복지시설 거주노인의 영양상태와 비타민-무기질 보충 효과에 관한 연구 (The Nutritional Status and Intervention Effects of Multivitamin-Mineral Supplementation in Nursing-Home Residents in Korea)

  • This study was performed to assess the nutritional status of nursing home residents and to assess the effect of nutrition intervention. The subjects were 123 people aged over 60 years from 5 different nursing homes. The nutrition intervention study was carried out by supplementing their diet with multivitamin-minerals for 2 months. The mean intakes of most nutrients did not meet the RDA, Though the nutrient content of the menus provided by the facilities were satisfactory. Nutrients of which intakes fell below 75% of the RDA were protein, Ca, Fe, vitamin A vitamin B$_1$, and vitamin B$_2$. The BMIs of male and female subjects were 22.0kg/$m^2$ and 24.6kg/$m^2$ and the WHRs were 0.92 and 0.90, respectively. The percentage of subjects with hypertention (BP$\geq$140/90mmHg) and with anemia(Hb$\leq$13mg/100$m\ell$ in men, Hb$\leq$12mg/100$m\ell$ in women) were 34.6% and 41.9%, respectively. The serum cncentrations of albumin, total protein, triglyceride, total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, and total lipid fell within normal ranges. However, 27.5% of the subjects showed a high serum cholesterol level of over 250mg/100$m\ell$. The concentration of C3 was 81.2mg/100$m\ell$, IgG, 1343mg/100$m\ell$, and IL-2, 0.766mg/$m\ell$. after 2 months of vitamin-mineral supplementation, the levels of blood glucose and total cholesterol were significantly decreased and triglyceride was significantly increased. The vitamin-mineral supplementation had no effect on the mean levels of vitamin A and E, IgG, IL2, and C3. However, the intervention resulted int he improvement of serum vitamin A and E levels when the subject\`s serum levels were low before the supplementation.

장기간 관찰에 의한 식생활과 혈청 총 콜레스테롤, 혈압, 체질량지수 및 혈당과의 관련성 연구 (A Long Term Observation of Total Cholesterol, Blood Pressure, BMI and Blood Glucose Concerned with Dietary Intake)

  • To establish a basic cohort which can survey the nutrient and food intake related to the health status of the middle and old-aged vertically, a longitudinal survey of 110 adults over forty years old was conducted three times in Chon-ju city over 5 years (1994-1999), and the influences of health status by changes in their nutrient and food intake were examined in this study. The results were as follows ; The number of subjects was 110(43 man, 67 women), 10.0% in their forties, 28.2% in their fifties, 45.4% in their sixties 6.4% over seventy, and their average age was 61.4. There were decrease of height about 1cm , increase of body fat % and few changes of BMI during the testing period. As the subjects were aging, the percentage of anemia increased, but averages of blood pressure and blood glucose(men : 91.8mg/㎗, women : 90.3mg/㎗) were constant. Total cholesterol increased from 196.7mg/㎗ to 212.6mg/㎗(P 0.05) over five years, and the numerical values for women were higher than that of men. In many cases, lack of nutrient intake was shown, as compared with the Recommended Dietary allowance(RDA) especially calcium and vitamin A(71.7%, 64.9% of RDA). Grains intake showed a tendency to decrease(P 0.01). On the contrary, fruit intake showed a tendency to increase(P 0.001). On whole meal, plant foods were 85.1% and animal foods were 14.9%. As dietary factors influencing health status were investigated, blood glucose was influenced by vitamin B$_2$, potatoes and triglyceride, DBP and SBP were affected by vitamin B$_1$, vitamin C, legumes, fishes, triglyceride and age. Total cholesterol was under the influence of triglyceride, milk, seeds and fat. BMI was influenced by iron, SBP, animal food, and age.

강화도 장수 노인의 식습관 점수별 식생활태도 및 영양상태 조사 (A Study on Dietary Pattern and Nutritional Status of the Long-Lived Elderly People by Food Habit Index in Ganghwa-gun Area)

  • This study was carried out to assess the food habit index of the long-lived elderly who were aged over 85 years living in Ganghwa-gun. A survey was conducted during December 2003. Dietary nutrient intake data was obtained through the 24-hr recall method. The subjects were 96 (32 males, 64 females) aged people and divided into three groups based on food habit index scores. Such as group A: good $16\∼20$, group B: fair $11\∼15$, and group C: poor $5\∼10$. The three groups of the subjects were 90.7 years of age and $21.3\;kg/m^{2}$ of BMI on average. Healthy eating index scores of the subjects were $9.4\%$ in group A, $54.2\%$ in group B and $36.5\%$ in group C. Their level of education were lower and their levels of living standards tended to have been middle and lower of the middle class. The percentage of living together with their families or spouses in all groups were over $60.0\%$ and the rates of the subjects who have responsibility for their meal preparations were also very high in all groups. Most subjects tended not to drink nor smoke, and spend $8\~10$ hours for their sleep. The percent of number of diseases in group A was lower than in groups B and C. Their dietary habits such as taking three meals a day regularly have shown that they have good eating habit in general. There was a positive correlation between the eating behaviors and nutrient intakes. The protein, animal protein, fat, PUFA, vitamin E, vitamin $B_{2}$, niacin, P and K intaks in group A were significantly higher than that of the groups B and C. For group A of good food habits aged had no sufficient intake of Ca and vitamin A than the Korean RDA and long-lived elderly of group C in Ganghwa areas had worse nutrients intakes, especially Ca, vitamin A, vitamin $B_{2}$ and vitamin E. According to this research having a good eating habits could be considered as increasing of the health and nutritional status. (Korean J Community Nutrition 10(6) $892\∼904$, 2005)

운동훈련이 흰쥐 노화심근에 미치는 영향 I. 장기간 지구력 운동 훈련 (Effects of the Exercise Training on Aging Heart in Rat I. Long Term Endurance Exercise)

  • 장기간 반복 주행운동이 횐 쥐의 심근에 미치는 효과를 규명하기 위하여 생후 3개월,10개 월 및 20개월 된 횐 쥐를 운동군과 대조군으로 대별하여 motor driven treadmill을 이용하여 Park등이 사용한 방법에 준해서 5개월간, 주 5일 20분간 운동을 시킨 후 심근의 조직 및 세포학적 변화를 관찰하고 심근 세포 내 미세구조 변화를 입체해석학적으로 비교 분석하였다. 연령 증가에 따라 장기간 반복운동이 휜쥐 심근미세구조에 미치는 영향은 8, 15개월의 운동군과 대조군 사이에 뚜렷한 차이를 인정할 수 없으며, 15개월의 운동군에서 대조군에 비하여 변성된 사립체, 리소조옴, 지방적, 공포, 노화색소 등이 증가하는 경향이 있었다. 25개월 운동군은 같은 연령 대조군에 비하여 근원섬유 수축대, 근원섬유 소실, 윤반분리,세포간질 증식, 핵의 변성,교원섬유 근섬유내 침입 등 매우 심한 변화를 보였다. 조직상에 나타나는 early lipofusin과 미세구조상에 나타나는 노화색소는 8, 15개월의 운동군과 대조군 사이에 유의한 차이는 없었으며, 25개월 운동군은 같은 연령 대조군에 비하여 유의한 차이로 증가하였다. Glucose-6-phosphatase 활성도 8, 15개월군에서 운동군과 대조군에서 모두 활성이 높았으며 25개월의 대조군과 운동군에서는 모두 활성이 거의 나타나지 않았다. 미세구조 변화를 입체해석학적으로 분석한 결과 8, 15개월의 대조군과 운동군에서 체적 밀도의 모든 항은 양군사이에 유의한 차이가 없었다. 25개월에서는 세포간질이 대조군에 비하여 운동군이 유의한 증가를 나타내었고, 근원섬유는 유의한 차이는 없지만 증가하는 경향을 보였으며, 사립체는 대조군에 비하여 유의 한 감소를 나타내었고 근형질세망의 체적밀도는 감소하는 경향을 보였다. 사립체와 근원섬유 비는 8개월 운동군에서 유의한 차이는 없지만 대조군에 비하여 높게 나타났으며, 15개월의 운동군과 대조군 사이에서는 차이를 인정할 수 없었다. 그러나 25개월 운동군은 대조군에 비하여 유의한 차이로 감소하였다. 연령증가에 따른 사립체 내막 표면밀도와 사립체수는 대조군과 운동군 사이에는 유의한 변화는 없었다. 본 연구의 성적을 검토한 결과 젊은층(3개월군)과 중령층(10개월군)의 횐 쥐에서는 반복된 지구력운동이 심장에 미치는 역효과를 인정할 수 없었으며 젊은 층의 횐 쥐에서는 오히려 심장기능 강화를 보이는 경향이 나타났으며, 노화층(20개월군)에서 운동군에서는 스트레스로 작용하여 심장기능의 저하를 초래하였다고 생각된다.

한국인의 나트륨 섭취에 기여하는 주요 음식군 및 식품군의 추이 분석: 1998~2010 국민건강영양조사 자료 분석 (Trends in the major dish groups and food groups contributing to sodium intake in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1998-2010)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate trends in the sources of dietary sodium intake in a representative Korean population in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted in 1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, and 2010. The study consisted of 53,570 men and women aged 7 years or older participating in the KNHANES during the corresponding years. Overall sodium intake and the mean percent contribution of each dish and food group to dietary sodium intake across 1998-2010 were calculated. The means of sodium intake ranged between 4,572.6-5,498.9 mg/d across 1998-2010. The major dish groups contributing to dietary sodium intake were kimchi (1,154.8-1,521.2 mg/d), noodles and dumplings (505.3-760.5 mg/d), soups (465.3-714.8 mg/d), and stews and casseroles (387.0-579.8 mg/d). The combined mean percent contribution from the top four dish groups contributing to dietary sodium intake showed a slight decrease over the period; 64.4% in 1998, 64.5% in 2001, 59.3% in 2005, 58.2% in 2007, 56.3% in 2008, 56.7% in 2009, and 54.4% in 2010. The major food groups contributing to dietary sodium intake were seasonings (1,852.9-2,435.9 mg/d), vegetables (1,425.6-1,792.1 mg/d), grains (482.2-778.1 mg/d), and fish and shellfish (257.2-351.4 mg/d). In addition, the combined mean percent contribution from the top four food groups showed a slight decrease over the period; 92.8% in 1998, 93.2% in 2001, 93.8% in 2005, 92.1% in 2007, 91.7% in 2008, 90.9% in 2009, and 90.7% in 2010. In summary, we did not observe a reduction in dietary sodium intake over time, however, the percent contributions from the top major dish groups or food groups to dietary sodium intake showed a decrease over the last decade.

Difference of The Cardiac Structure and Function Depending on Obesity Level of Healthy Adults

  • The purpose of this study was to find out any difference and correlation between the cardiac structure and its function according to the level of obesity as evaluated by waist measurement and BMI (body mass index) in healthy adults. For research subjects, the study selected a final 519 subjects excluding 198 subjects aged 55 or over out of 717 subjects who received echocardiography through a medical checkup at J General Hospital. For the criteria for obesity, men were defined as being obese in case their waist measurement was over 90 cm, whereas women were defined as being obese in case their waist measurement was over 80 cm. Also, regarding the BMI criteria, in case a person's BMI was 30 kg/$m^2$, the subject was classified as belonging to an obese group, and in case a person's BMI was between 25 kg/$m^2$ and 30 kg/$m^2$, the subject was classified as belonging to an overweight group. Concerning the evaluation of cardiac structure and function, they were evaluated using two-dimensional, M-mode, doppler echocardiography. According to the stage of obesity in accordance with waist measurement and BMI, the cardiac structure showed both eccentric and centripetal changes, and the cardiac function was also discovered to show differences according to the stage of obesity. In addition, also in the overweight group, which is a prior stage to obesity, out of the criteria for obesity classification according to BMI, there were differences in the cardiac structure and function. Also, both the waist measurement and BMI were found to have a correlation with cardiac structure and diastolic function. Consequently, cardiac structure and function are correlated with BMI and waist measurement, which are anthropometrical variables, and obesity is assumed to induce not only structural change but also functional change of the heart.

노령 흡연자의 혈중 카드뮴 농도 (The Blood Cadmium Level in Elderly Smoker)

  • This study was carried out to investigate the cadmium level in blood by age, gender, and smoking status among 162 elderly subjects in Gyeongnam Province from September 2006 to February 2007. The cadmium level in blood was analyzed by atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Subjects were classified according to smoking status and divided into smokers and non-smokers, smoking duration, daily smoking habits, age, and gender. Mean blood cadmium levels in male and female were $0.70{\pm}0.41{\mu}g/dL$ and $0.57{\pm}0.32{\mu}g/dL$ respectively, with no significant differences between the two groups. Cadmium levels in the blood of smokers and non-smokers were $0.57{\pm}0.32{\mu}g/dL$, $0.90{\pm}0.44{\mu}g/dL$ respectively, with the cadmium level of smokers being significantly higher than that of non-smokers. In comparison by age, cadmium levels in the blood of subjects over the age 70 years and over the age 80 years were $0.91{\pm}0.44{\mu}g/dL$, $1.02{\pm}0.39{\mu}g/dL$ respectively, showing a significantly higher blood cadmium level than that of non-smokers. when compared by the amount of daily cigarette consumption, there were no significant differences in the blood cadmium level between groups. However when compared by smoking duration, the blood cadmium level for the group of smoking duration of over 10 years was $1.15{\pm}0.38{\mu}g/dL$, significantly higher than $0.67{\pm}0.31{\mu}g/dL$ for the group of smoking duration of less than 10 years. In conclusion, longer smoking duration and older aged group showed higher cadmium level in blood. For more reliable results, further study of the elements that elevate the cadmium level in blood with more subjects and study variables will be needed.

경남지역 백세인의 장수요인과 일상생활수행능력(ADL) 및 도구적 생활수행능력(IADL)에 대한 연구 (A Study on the factors of longevity, ADL and IADL of the eldery people over 100 years in Gyeongnam province)

  • 본 연구는 경남지역의 백세인(100세 이상 자) 88 명을 대상으로 2011년 4월부터 6월까지 약 90여 일간장수 요인과 일상생활 수행능력 도구적 생활수행능력 정도를 파악하기 위한 목적으로 수행하였다. 장수요인으로는 7시간 이상의 충분한 수면(93.6%), 규칙적인 식사(95.5%,) 짠 음식 적게 섭취(69.8%), 그리고 자살을 생각하지 않는 낙관적 사고(86.9%)와 금연(92.0%) 과 절주(86.4%,)로 나타났다. 일상생활수행능력(ADL) 중 목욕하는 것이 가장 힘들었으며 도구적 생활수행능력(IADL)의 경우는 버스나 전철 혼자타기가 가장 힘든 것으로 나타났다. 모든 영역에서 여성이 남성에 비해 일상생활수행능력, 도구적 생활수행능력이 높은 것으로 나타났으나 통계적으로 유의한 차이는 없었다(p<0.05). 따라서 향후 연구에서는 본 연구의 결과를 토대로 점차 늘어나고 있는 백세인의 신체수행능력 저하를 보완 지지할 수 있는 정책의 개발이 필요한 것으로 사료된다.

서울지역 여자 노인의 영양실태와 식생활 형태 - 노인대학을 중심으로 - (Nutritional State and Dietary Behavior of the Free-Living Elderly Women)

  • The issue of health and nutritional wellbeing becomes one of the utmost concerns for the welfare of the elderly in a society of increased aging populations. This study was conducted to assess nutritional state and to identify possible dietary factors that might influence health and nutritional state of the free living elderly women. Two hundred sixty two elderly women, aged 60-90 who are actively participating in a continuing education program for the elderly in Seoul area, were interviewed using a dietary habit questionnaire and a 24-hour recall. Anthropometric measurements such as heights, weights, body mass index, and tricep skinfolds and dental status were significantly different between the two age groups, <75 and ${\geq}$ 75 years of age. Sixty eight percent of the subjects were using nutritional supplements regularly, in the descending order of vitamin-mineral supplements(40%), botanicals(27.6%), tonic drinks(16%), and health foods(13.2%). For hot beverages, our study subjects drank coffee (33.6%) and green tea (17.9%) frequently, followed by doongulae, job's tears, citron and kyulmyung tea. With regard to micronutrients, vitamin C intake was found to be lower in the group aged over 75 compared to that below 75 (p<0.05). Calcium intake was significantly higher among the elderly with good dental status followed by the groups with gingivitis, denture, and missed teeth with poor chewing abilities (p<0.05). The amount of personal spending money was found to be a significant contributing factor (p<0.05) to the energy and nutrient intake in an individual. The results of the present study can be applied to the identification of the possible factors that might intervene the aging process, to the planning of the nutrition education program, and to the development of health food products for the promotion of health and nutrition of the elderly women.
