  • The influences of Cu and Mg addition on wear properties of SiC particulate reinforced Al-Si metal(alloy) matrix composites were investigated. Metal matrix composites were prepared by combination of compocasting and hot pressing techniques. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) The composite with Mg addition exhibits letter wear resistance than that with Cu addition. It is considered that Mg addition improved wettability of matal matrix composite by the strong segregation to the SiC / Al matrix interface. 2) After homogenization treatment, it was found that the interfacial segregation of Mg was predominant, while that of Cu was not detected. 3) The SiC / Al-11Si eutectic composite exhibits better wear resistance than the SiC / Al-6Si hypoeutectic composite does. 4) It seems that the increase in the amount of Mg addition affects on the uniform dispersion of SiC particulates, on the refinement of microstructure and on age hardening and these effects cause wear resistance improvement of composites.

  • The nano/microstructure and mechanical properties of the eutectic regions in thixo and rheo cast A356 alloy parts were investigated using nano/micro-indentation and mechanical scratching, combined with optical microscopy and atomic force microscope (AFM).Most eutectic Si crystals in the A356 alloy showed a modified morphology as fine-fibers, however Si particles of network in eutectic region was formed quickly with aging time increase in thixo-cast. The aging responses of the eutectic regions in both the thixo and rheo cast A356 alloys aged at $150^{\circ}C$ for different times (0, 2, 4, 8, 10, 16, 24, 36, and 72 h) were investigated. Both Vickers hardness ($H_V$) and indentation ($H_{IT}$) test results showed almost the same trend of aging curves, the peak was obtained at the same aging time of 10 h.

  • Strength of concrete is very important factor in design and quality management and may represent overall quality of concrete. Such strength of concrete may differ depending on amount of cement mixed, water and fine aggregate ratio. Classic concrete products have been produced mainly with ordinary portland cement(hereinafter 'cement'), water and fine aggregate as shown above, but various additives and mixture materials have been used for concrete manufacturing, along with development of high functional concrete and diversification of structures. Various kinds of chemical mixtures agents and mixture materials have been used as it requires concretes with other features which cannot be solved with existing materials only, such as high strength, high flexibility and no-separation in the water. Such addition of various mixture agents may cause change in cement hydrate, affecting strength. Hydration of cement is the process of producing potassium hydroxide, C-S-H, C-A-H and Ettringite, while causing heat generation reaction after it is mixed with water, and generation amounts of such hydrates play lots of roles in condensation and hardening. This study aims to analyze its strength and features with hydrates by making specimen according to curing temperature, types of mixture agent, mixing ratio and ages and by analyzing such hydrates in order to analyze role of cement hydrate on early strength of concrete.

  • For cold weather concreting, frost damage at early age is generated in the concrete, and problems such as delaying of setting and hardening and lowering of strength manifestation emerge due to the low outside air temperature at the early stage of pouring, making the selection of an effective curing method critically important. Unfortunately, the tent sheet currently used as the curing film for heating insulation at work sites, not only has the problems of inferior permeability and extremely deteriorated airtightness, but a phenomenon of continuous fracturing is also generated along the direction of fabric of the material itself, presenting difficult circumstances for maintaining adequate curing temperature. The aim of this study was to develop an improved bubble sheet type curing film for heating insulation of cold weather concrete by combining mesh-tarpaulin, which has excellent tension properties, with bubble sheet, which offers superior insulation performance. The analysis showed that the improved curing film in which BBS1 is stacked to MT was a suitable replacement for curing films currently in use, as it has better permeability, tension property, and insulation performance than the T type film used at work sites today.

  • Both cast and extruded composites of SiC whisker reinforced 6061 Al alloy matrix were fabricated by high pressure infiltration of the alloy melt into the SiC preform and subsequent hot extrusion of the composite ingots. The micro structures, age hardening behavior and mechanical properties have been examined on the both cast and extruded composites of SiCw/6061. The cast composites of SiCw/6061 were obtained in which SiC whiskers were randomly oriented. Hot extrusion of these cast composites lead to alignment of the whisker in the direction of extrusion. Strengthening effect of whisker in the extruded composites is lower than that of the cast composites. The cast composites of SiCw/6061 showed higher thensile strength and lower elongation than extruded composites of SiCw/6061 at all testing temperatures. Lower tensile strength and higher elongation of the extruded composites were attributable to fine grain structures in which grain boundary sliding occruued preferentially at elevated temperatures.

  • Mucolipidoses II and III alpha/beta (ML II and ML III) are lysosomal disorders in which the essential mannose-6-phosphate recognition marker is not synthesized onto lysosomal hydrolases and other glycoproteins. The disorders are caused by mutations in GNPTAB, which encodes two of three subunits of the heterohexameric enzyme, N-acetylglucosamine-1-phosphotransferase ML II, recognizable at birth, often causes intrauterine growth impairment and sometimes the prenatal "Pacman" dysplasia. The main postnatal manifestations of ML II include gradual coarsening of neonatally evident craniofacial features, early cessation of statural growth and neuromotor development, dysostosis multiplex and major morbidity by hardening of soft connective tissue about the joints and in the cardiac valves. Fatal outcome occurs often before or in early childhood. ML III with clinical onset rarely detectable before three years of age, progresses slowly with gradual coarsening of the facial features, growth deficiency, dysostosis multiplex, restriction of movement in all joints before or from adolescence, painful gait impairment by prominent hip disease. Cognitive handicap remains minor or absent even in the adult, often wheelchair-bound patient with variable though significantly reduced life expectancy. As yet, there is no cure for individuals affected by these diseases. So, clinical manifestations and conservative treatment is important. This review aimed to highlight the extra-skeletal clinical problems in ML II and III.

  • Rapid solidified splats Al-(1, 3, 5Cr) Alloys were produced by atomization-splat quenching method. Effects of mechanical alloying on the structure and mechanical properties of rapidly solidified Al-(1, 3, 5)Cr alloys were studied. Degree of mechanical alloying of Al-(1, 3, 5)Cr alloys can be determined by observing the microstructural refinement, microhardness and microstructure of Al-(l, 3, 5)Cr splats during processing. In the initial stage of mechanical alloying of the Al-(1, 3, 5)Cr splats fracturing of the grain boundaries occured first, followed after fracturing of zone A regions. Saturation hardness of Al-(1, 3, 5)Cr alloys increased proportionally with increasing concentration of the solute (Cr). Age hardening was not observed in these alloys. Decomposition temperature of Al-1Cr splats after mechanical alloying was higher than that of Al-5Cr splats. The density of $Al_7$ Cr precipitates increased proportionally with increasing chromium content, as a result, there was a transition to finely and spherically dispersed phase after mechanical alloying.

  • Microstructural characteristics and strengthening behavior in Mg-5wt%Zn-0.6wtZr alloys have been investigated by a combination of optical, secondary electron and transmission electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis, and hardness and tensile, creep property measurements. The result have been compared with those of Mg-5wt%Zn alloys. The as-squeeze cast microstructure consisted of dendrite ${\alpha}-Mg$, interdendrite or intergranular $Mg_7Zn_3$ and fine dispersoids of $ZnZr_2$. The size of secondary solidification phases in Mg-5wt%Zn-0.6wtZr alloys was significantly smaller than that of the Mg-5wt%Zn alloys due to the existence of fine dispersoid of $ZnZr_2$ which also effected the refinement of grain size. TEM study showed that the main cause of age hardening is formation of fine rodlike ${\beta}_1\;'$ precipitates as well as fine $ZnZr_2$ dispersoids. Due to the observed microstructural characteristics mechanical propeties of Mg-5wt%Zn-0.6wtZr alloys was found to be superior to those of Mg-5wt%Zn alloys.

  • CSA, a cement mineral compound that is mainly composed of $3CaO{\cdot}3Al_2O_3{\cdot}CaSO_4$, generates ettringite as a hydration product after a reaction with glass (lime), gypsum and water to speed up the hardening process and enhance the strength and degree of expansion. When used as a cement admixture, there is increased production of ettringite, which can improve the initial strength in the first three days and ameliorate the reduction in the initial strength caused by the use of fly ash in particular. In this study, a hydrate analysis was performed using XRD and SEM after substitution with fly ash (30%) and CSA (8%) with the goal of observing the effect of CSA on the initial strength of a cement mixture containing fly ash. The results of the analysis showed that an addition of CSA promoted the production of ettringite and improved the initial strength, resulting in the generation of hydrates, which can effectively enhance the long-term strength of these materials.

  • Controlled precipitation of quasi-binary semiconductor system is newly proposed as an effective and reliable technique for the formation of well-defined and crystallographically aligned semiconductor nanostructures. Using HgTe-PbTe quasi-binary semiconductor system, self-aligned HgTe nanocrystallites distributed three dimensionally within PbTe matrix were successfully formed by the simple three step heat treatment process routinely found in age hardening process of metallic alloys. Examination of the resulting nano precipitates using conventional transmission electron microscopy (CTEM) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM) reveals that the coherent HgTe precipitates form as thin discs along the (100) habit planes making a crystallographic relation of {100}$\_$HgTe///{100}$\_$PbTe/ and [100]$\_$HgTe///[100]$\_$PbTe/. It is also found that the precipitate undergoes a gradual thickening and a faceting under isothermal aging up to 500 hours without any noticeable coarsening. These results, combined with the extreme dimension of the precipitates (4-5 nm in length and sub-nanometer in thickness) and the simplicity of the formation process, leads to the conclusion that controlled precipitation is an effective method for preparing desirable quantum-dot nanostructures.
