Activated Carbon Fibers (ACFs) are widely used as adsorbents in technologies related to pollution abatement due to their highly porous structure and large adsorption capacity. The porous structure and surface area of ACFs depends strongly on both the activation processes arid the nature .of the precursors. The chemical activation with hydroxides has recently been, of great interest as it permits the preparation of activated carbon fibers with highly developed porosity. In this work, OXI-PAN fiber used as precursor for the preparation of activated carbon fibers by chemical activation with KOH and NaOH. The affects of several activation conditions on the surface properties, pore size distribution and adsorption capacity of Ag ion and Iodine ion on ACFs studied.
This is the study for the removal of a toxic heavy metal ions and the recycling of expanded polystyrene wastes. Thus expanded polystyrene wastes collected from the packing materials of TV or chemicals and dissolved by $80wt.\%$ solvent(N, N-Dimethylacrylamide), electrospun in DC 20kV by power supply. Generally, the electrospinning is a process of manufacture to the fibers of nanosize from polymer solution. Manufactured nanofiber mats by electrospinning were sulfonated by cone.-sulphuric acid with $Ag_2S_O_4$ catalysts for the exchange capacity of heavy metal ions and the properties of structure with sulfonated time investigated by FESEM(Feild Emission Scaning Electron Microscope). The ion exchange capacity of light metal$(Na^+)$, Cd(II) and Ni(II), and by a nanofiber mats were 1.94[mmo1/g-dry-mat), 1.72(mmol/g-dry-mat), 1.24(mmol/g-dry-mat), respectively., and water uptake content showed a similar trend with IEC. and The selectivity coefficients $K^M_H$ of Cd(II), Ni((II) ions showed 0.324, 0.228. respectively.
In order to exclude the effect of uneven distribution of gold in anode slime, the dissolution of gold and silver from the metal mixture was investigated in different systems, such as the mixture of hydrochloric acid and oxidizing reagents ($H_2O_2$, NaClO and $HNO_3$), thiosulfate and thiourea. In the mixture of HCl and either $HNO_3$ or $H_2O_2$, Au was completely dissolved but the leaching percentage of Ag was around 1%. In both thiosulfate and thiourea solution, gold was not dissolved at all. The presence of ferric ion in acidic thiourea solution showed a favorable effect on the leaching of silver but further study is necessary to elucidate the combined effect of ferric ion and sulfuric acid.

A micro pH-ISFET probe, which can be applied to the in vivo measurements of the hydrogen ion concentration in blood, has been developed, and a measuring system equiped with this probe also developed. The pH-ISFET has been fatricated by employing the techniques of integrated circuit fabrication. Two kinds of micro electrode formed around the sensing gate during the wafer process, and the other is a capillary type of Ag/AfCl/sat. KCI reduced in size. This capillary electrode has shown its good performance characteristics so far in the application with ISFET as well as a commercial one. In order to form a micro pH-ISFET probe, this pH-ISFET and well as a commercial one. In order to form a micro pH-ISFET probe, this pH-ISFET and the capillary electrode were built together into a needle tip having 1 mm inner diameter. The chip size of a twin pH-ISFET is 0.8 mmx1.4 mm, the material of the sensing gate membrane is Si3N4, and the sensitivity of the developed probe is about 52mV/pH.

In this study, we report significant improvements in lithium-ion battery anodes cost and performance, by fabricating nano porous silicon (Si) particles from Si wafer sludge using the metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) process. To solve the problem of volume expansion of Si during alloying/de-alloying with lithium ions, a layer was formed through nitric acid treatment, and Ag particles were removed at the same time. This layer acts as a core-shell structure that suppresses Si volume expansion. Additionally, the specific surface area of Si increased by controlling the etching time, which corresponds to the volume expansion of Si, showing a synergistic effect with the core-shell. This development not only contributes to the development of high-capacity anode materials, but also highlights the possibility of reducing manufacturing costs by utilizing waste Si wafer sludge. In addition, this method enhances the capacity retention rate of lithium-ion batteries by up to 38 %, marking a significant step forward in performance improvements.
Cu(II) ion-responsive chemically modifed electrodes (CMEs) were constructed by incorporating 1-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol (PAN) into a conventional carbon-paste mixture of graphite powder and Nujol oil. Cu(II) ion was chemically deposited on the surface of the PAN-chemically modified electrode in the absence of an applied potential by immersion of the electrode in a buffer solution (pH 3.2) containing Cu(II) ion, and then reduced at a constant potential in 0.1 M KNO$_3$. And a well-defined voltammetric peak could be obtained by scanning the potential to the positive direction. The electrode surface could be regenerated with exposure to acid solution and reused for the determination of Cu(II) ion. In 5 deposition / measurement / regeneration cycles, the response could be reproduced with 6.1${\%}$ relative standard deviation. In case of using the differential pulse voltammetry, the calibration curve for Cu(II) was linear over the range of 2.0 ${times}$ 10$^{-7}$ ∼ 1.0 ${times}$ 10$^{-6}$ M. And the detection limit was 6.0 ${times}$ 10$^{-8}$ M. Studies of the effect of diverse ions showed that Co, Ni, Zn, Pb, Mg and Ag ions added 10 times more than Cu(II) ion did not influence on the determination of Cu(II) ion, except EDTA and oxalate ions.

In recent days, there is much interest in the biocidal activity of silver since silver is known to be safe and effective as disinfectant and biocidal material against coliforms and viruses. In particular, nano silted silver particles which can be used as effective biocidal material received more attention. Accordingly, it is important to investigate antimicrobial activity and mechanism of nano sized silver particles prepared in a cost-effective manner. In this study, nano sized silver particles were prepared via photoreduction of a silver salt ($AgNO_3$) in the bulk phase of $PEO_{20}-PPO_{70}-PEO_{20}$ (Pluronic 123) block copolymer The antimicrobial efficacy of silver nano particles against E. coli was investigated and compared with that of silver ion as the concentration of silver nano particles, pH ($5.6{\sim}8.2$), temperature ($4^{\circ}C{\sim}35^{\circ}C$) varied in aqueous system. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to examine the nature of damaged microorganism with nano sized silver particles and silver ion. This study showed that antimicrobial efficacy of silver nano particles was approximately one twentieth than that of silver ion. It was more biocidal at higher pH in contrast with silver ion. In addition, nano silver particles was demonstrated to disrupt the outer membrane of E. coli, subsequently causing their aggregation. On the other hand, silver ion diffused into the cell damaging the cytoplasmic membrane without disrupting the outer membrane of E. coli.
Size controlled, $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ cathode powders were prepared by co-precipitation method followed by heat treatment at temperatures between 750 and $850^{\circ}C$. The synthesized samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electrochemical performance. The synthesized $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ after calcined at $750^{\circ}C$ has a good electrochemical performance with an initial discharge capacity of $190mAhg^{-1}$ and good capacity retention of 100% after 30 cycles at 0.1C ($17mAg^{-1}$). The capacity retention of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ after calcined at $750^{\circ}C$ is better than that at 800 and $850^{\circ}C$ without capacity loss at various high C rates. This is ascribed to the minimized cation disorder, a higher conductivity, and higher lithium ion diffusion coefficient ($D_{Li}$) observed in this material. In the differential scanning calorimetry DSC profile of the charged sample, the generation of heat by exothermic reaction was decreased by calcined at high temperature, and this decrease is especially at $850^{\circ}C$. This behavior implies that the high temperature calcinations of $LiNi_{0.8}Co_{0.15}Al_{0.05}O_2$ prevent phase transitions with the release of oxygen.
A field effect transistor(FET) type dissolved carbon dioxide($pCO_{2}$) sensor with a double layer structure of hydrogel membrane and $CO_{2}$ gas permeable membrane was fabricated by utilizing a $H^{+}$ ion selective field effect transistor(pH-ISFET) with Ag/AgCl reference electrode as a base chip. Formation of hydrogel membrane with photo-crosslinkable PVA-SbQ or PVP-PVAc/photosensitizer system was not suitable with the photolithographic process. Furthermore, hydrogel membrane on pH-ISFET base chip could be fabricated by photolithographic method with the aid of N,N,N',N'-tetramethyl othylenediarnine(TED) as $O_{2}$ quencher without using polyester film as a $O_{2}$ blanket during UV irradiation process. Photosensitive urethane acrylate type oligomer was used as gas permeable membrane on top of hydrogel layer. The FET type $pCO_{2}$ sensor fabricated by photolithographic method showed good linearity (linear calibration curve) in the range of $10^{-3}{\sim}10^{0}\;mol/{\ell}$ of dissolved $CO_{2}$ in aqueous solution with high sensitivity.
Analyses of UV-Vis spectrum and reflectance are useful tools to identify pearls of which color was naturally made or chemically changed. Contents of some trace elements of pearls by using ED-XRF may give us the information that the pearls were originated from marine shells or freshwater shells, and may give us whether the pearls were chemically treated or not. Three types of chemically untreated pearls, freshwater cultured, Akoya cultured and Tahitian cultured, were treated with silver nitrate. UV-Vis absorbance spectrum of Ag was changed after treatment, and reflectance of pearls was decreased. Absorbance of natural black colored Tahitian cultured pearls at 400, 500 and 700 nm was observed. Natural black colored freshwater cultured pearls showed two characteristic absorption patterns in UV-Vis spectra at 380-400, 480-500 nm. Unlike naturally black colored Tahitian cultured pearls, the absorption spectrum at 700 nm could not be found from black freshwater cultured pearls. Manganese was not detected in the pearls from marine shells, and strontium content of the pearls from marine cultured shells was higher than that from freshwater cultured shells. According to ED-XRF analysis, Ag contents of silver nitrate treated pearls increased as more time passed, because silver ion invaded to nacre layer of the pearls. Since Ag content of the black pearls known as untreated ranged under 0.1%, analysis of Ag content may used to distinguish the black pearls are treated or not in marketplace.
