  • Due to high spatio-temporal variability of amount and optical/microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols, satellite-based observations have been demanded for spatiotemporal monitoring the major aerosols. Observations of the heavy aerosol episodes and determination on the dominant aerosol types from a geostationary satellite can provide a chance to prepare in advance for harmful aerosol episodes as it can repeatedly monitor the temporal evolution. A new geostationary observation sensor, namely the Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI), onboard the Himawari-8 platform, has been observing high spatial and temporal images at sixteen wavelengths from 2016. Using observed spectral visible reflectance and infrared brightness temperature (BT), the algorithm to find major aerosol type such as volcanic ash (VA), desert dust (DD), polluted aerosol (PA), and clean aerosol (CA), was developed. RGB color composite image shows dusty, hazy, and cloudy area then it can be applied for comparing aerosol detection product (ADP). The CALIPSO level 2 vertical feature mask (VFM) data and MODIS level 2 aerosol product are used to be compared with the Himawari-8/AHI ADP. The VFM products can deliver nearly coincident dataset, but not many match-ups can be returned due to presence of clouds and very narrow swath. From the case study, the percent correct (PC) values acquired from this comparisons are 0.76 for DD, 0.99 for PA, 0.87 for CA, respectively. The MODIS L2 Aerosol products can deliver nearly coincident dataset with many collocated locations over ocean and land. Increased accuracy values were acquired in Asian region as POD=0.96 over land and 0.69 over ocean, which were comparable to full disc region as POD=0.93 over land and 0.48 over ocean. The Himawari-8/AHI ADP algorithm is going to be improved continuously as well as the validation efforts will be processed by comparing the larger number of collocation data with another satellite or ground based observation data.

  • A semi-empirical method to determine the electrostatic characteristics of a diode type corona aerosol charger based on ion current measurement and electrostatic charging theory was presented. Results from mathematical model were in agreement with those from experimental investigation of the charger. Current-voltage characteristics, $N_{i}t$ product and charge distribution against aerosol size were obtained. It was shown that the space charge was significant and must be taken into account at high ion number concentration and low flow rate. Additionally, significant particle loss was evident for particles smaller than 20 nm in diameter where their electrical mobility was high. Increase in charging efficiency may be achieved by introducing surrounding sheath flow and applying AC high voltage. Overall, the approach was found to be useful in characterizing the aerosol charger.

  • The paper first describes the atmospheric correction algorithm for the Ocean Color and Temperature Scanner (OCTS) visible band data used at Earth Observation Center (EOC) of National Space Development Agenrr of japan (NASDA). It uses 10 candidate aerosol models including "Asian dust model" introduced in consideration of the unique feature of aerosols over the east Asian waters. Based on the observations at 670 and 865 nm bands where the reflectance of the water body can be discarded, the algorithm selects a pair of aerosol models that accounts best for the observed spectral reflectances to synthesize the aerosol reflectance in other bands. The paper also evaluates the performance of the algorithm by comparing the satellite estimates of water-leaving radiance and chlorophyll-a concentration with selected buoy- and ship-measured data. In comparison with the old CZCS-type atmospheric correction algorithm where the aerosol reflectance is assumed to be spectrally independent, the OCTS algorithm records factor 2-3 less error in estimating the normalized water-leaving radiances. In terms of chlorophyll-a concentration estimation, however, the accuracy stays very similar compared to that of the CZCS-type algorithm. This is considered to be due to the nature of in-water algorithm which relies on spectral ratio of water-leaving radiances.

  • The vertical profiles and optical properties of Asian dust are investigated using ground-based measurements from 1998 to 2002. Vertical profiles of aerosol extinction coefficient are evaluated using MPL (Micro Pulse Lidar) data. Optical parameters such as aerosol optical thickness ($\tau$), ${\AA}ngstr\ddot{o}m$ exponent ($\alpha$), single scattering albedo ($\omega$), refractive index, and volume size distribution are analyzed with sun/sky radiometer data for the same period. We can separate aerosol vertical profiles into three categories. First category named as 'Asian dust case', which aerosol extinction coefficient is larger than $0.15km^{-1}$ and dust layer exists from surface up to 3-4km. Second category named as 'Elevated aerosol case', which aerosol layer exists between 2 and 6km with 1-2.5km thickness, and extinction coefficient is smaller than $0.15km^{-1}$. Third category named as 'Clear sky case', which aerosol extinction coefficient appears smaller than $0.15km^{-1}$. and shows that diurnal variation of background aerosol in urban area. While optical parameters for first category indicate that $\tau$ and $\alpha$ are $0.63{\pm}0.14$, $0.48{\pm}0.19$, respectively. Also, aerosol volume concentration is increased for range of 1 and $4{\mu}m$, in coarse mode. Optical parameters for second category can be separated into two different types. Optical properties of first type are very close to Asian dust cases. Also, dust reports of source region and backward trajectory analyses assure that these type is much related with Asian dust event. However, optical properties of the other type are similar to those of urban aerosol. For clear sky case, $\tau$ is relatively smaller and $\alpha$ is larger compare with other cases. Each case shows distinct characteristics in aerosol optical parameters.

  • The aerosol optical properties such as depolarization ratio (${\delta}$) and aerosol extinction-to-backscatter ratios (S, LIDAR ratio) and ${\AA}ngstr{\ddot{o}m$ exponent (${\AA}$) derived from measurement with AERONET sun/sky radiometer at Gangneung-Wonju National University (GWNU), Gangneung, Korea ($37.77^{\circ}N$, $128.87^{\circ}E$) during a winter season (December 2014 - February 2015) are presented. The PM concentration measurements are conducted simultaneously and used to identify the high-PM events. The observation period was divided into three cases according to the PM concentrations. We analysed the ${\delta}$, S, and ${\AA}$ during these high PM-events. These aerosol optical properties are calculated by the sun/sky radiometer data and used to classify a type of aerosols (e.g., dust, anthropogenic pollution). The higher values of ${\delta}$ with lower values of S and ${\AA}$ were measured for the dust particles. The mean values of ${\delta}$, S, and ${\AA}$ at 440-870 nm wavelength pair (${\AA}_{440-870}$) for the Asia dust were 0.19-0.24, 36-56 sr, and 0.48, respectively. The anthropogenic aerosol plumes are distinguished with the lower values of ${\delta}$ and higher values of ${\AA}$. The mean values of spectral ${\delta}$ and ${\AA}_{440-870}$ for this case varied 0.06-0.16 and 1.33-1.39, respectively. We found that aerosol columnar optical properties obtained from the sun/sky radiometer measurement are useful to identify the aerosol type. Moreover, the columnar aerosol optical properties calculated based on sun/sky radiometer measurements such as ${\delta}$, S, and ${\AA}$ will be further used for the validation of aerosol parameters obtained from LIDAR observation as well as for quantification of the air quality.

  • In this study, indoor $PM_{10}$ concentration was measured by different type of real-time instruments in public transport vehicles. Light-scattering method is widely used in measuring the size of particulate matters and there is two types of light-scattering methods; one is the nephelometer type which measures the light-scattering degree by aerosol cloud, the other is the spectrometer type which measures light-scattering degree by individual particle. We observed the variation of $PM_{10}$ in KTX, subway and express bus carriages by 1-minute resolution and found that there is similar tendency in pattern among 4 light-scattering devices but difference in absolute concentrations. By comparing gravimetric result in a subway cabin, the spectrometer type device, C, was chosen as a reference device. The conversion factors of nephelometer device A-1, A-2, and B were 1.666, 1.463 and 2.125 respectively.
