In the estimation of the aerosol single fiber efficiency using fibrous filters, there is a size range, where the particles penetrate most effectively through the fibrous collectors, and corresponding minimum single fiber efficiency. For small particles in which the diffusion mechanism is dominant, the Cunningham slip correction factor (Cc) affects the single fiber efficiency and the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). Therefore, for accurate estimation, Cc is essential to be considered. However, many previous studies have neglected this factor because of its complexity and the associated difficulty in deriving the appropriate parameterization particularly for the MPPS. In this study, the expression for the MPPS, and the corresponding expression for the minimum single fiber efficiency are analytically derived, and the effects of Cc are determined. In order to accommodate the slip factor for all particle-size ranges, Cc is simplified and modified. Overall, the obtained analytical expression for the MPPS is in a good agreement with the exact solution.
Fine particle capture is facing a challenge since traditional filtration which relies on the combination of impaction, interception, diffusion has a limited efficiency for fine particle capture particularly in size from 0.1 to $0.5{\mu}m$. This paper reviewed the collection efficiency of above mechanisms, as well as magnetic mechanisms for ferromagnetic particles, and mainly studied the influencing factors of magnetic filtration. Filtration velocity, magnetic field intensity and fiber size were found to be the most important parameters for magnetic filtration.

The influences of corona charging parameters on collection efficiency and surface potential of air filters were investigated. A polypropylene filter medium was electrically charged using a corona charger, and the resulting surface potential and filtration efficiency against neutralized KCl particles were measured. The filter media was charged under different conditions of applied voltage, voltage polarity, charging time, and distance between electrodes. In addition, we considered charging both sides of the filter as well as charging one side of the filter. As a result, electrical force obtained by charged fiber affected filtration efficiency when the apply voltage strength was higher than 7 kV. Negatively charged filter had higher filtration efficiency than positively charged filter while the surface potential of the negatively charged filter was slightly lower than those of positively charged filter. Moreover, the filtration efficiency increased as the charging time of filter fiber increased and the distance between electrodes decreased. The filtration efficiency was more sensitive to changes of charging time than to those of electrode distance, and the efficiency of both sides charged filter was higher than that of single side charged filter.
Liquid filtration by membrane filters is essential for the preparation of ultrapure water in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The separation of submicrometer particles suspended in ultrapure water with a laminated fibrous membrane filter was studied numerically and experimentally in the present work. We found that an electrical double layer around a single fiber expanded to a large extent at a low ion concentration, as in ultrapure water, and deformed toward the upstream of the fiber with increasing filtration velocity. Since an increase in the electrical double-layer thickness leads to a decrease in the electrical potential gradient, particles with the same polarity as the fiber approach the fiber more easily and are captured at a high filtration velocity. Experimental results also confirmed that the collection efficiency of polystyrene latex(PSL) particles through a PTFE filter became higher as the filtration velocity increased.
We have developed an electrostatic precipitation (ESP) type air cleaner for indoor air quality and investigated its performances regarding CADR (Clean air delivery rate), single-pass efficiency and gas removal efficiency. The ESP air cleaner used an ACF (Activated carbon fiber) filter for gas removal and the ACF as a high voltage electrode for particle removal. The ESP air cleaner was tested in a chamber with the volume of $1m^3$ regarding CADR and gas removal efficiency. The applied CADR area of the ESP was $1.8m^2$. Gas removal efficiency was tested with 3 gases (Acetaldehyde, Acetic acid, Ammonia). As the results of the gas removal efficiency, the ESP air cleaner shows the removal efficiencies of 90, 98 and 85% for acetaldehyde, acetic acid and ammonia, respectively.
Filter efficiency of electrically charged particle in uncharged fibrous filter was measured. In previous studies, the effect of charged particle on filter efficiency was investigated but there was difficulty in measuring of image effect that is appeared at the charged small particle. We could easily measure the image effect with charging small particles by photoelectric charging. The spark discharge aerosol generator and a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) were used to generate sub-micron monodisperse particles (${\leq}200$ nm). The generated particles were charged in photoelectric charging process using ultraviolet lamp and electric field. The filter efficiency of the charged particles, classified by another DMA, was measured in filter tester using a condensation nucleus counter (CNC) as function of particle diameter, particle charge and airflow velocity. It is shown that the filter efficiency increases with increasing charge number of the particle and is affected by particle size and flow velocity. Single fiber filter efficiency mainly depends on image force parameter and peclet number. The peclet number was not considered at previous other papers. We propose a modi fied experimental correlation as function of image force parameter and peclet number.
