In this paper, we describe a new method to form polymer thin films, in which carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are homogeneously distributed so that they can strengthen the mechanical property of resulting polymer film. To do so, we first homogeneously mixed CNTs with polymer in a DMF solvent. With the assistance of ultrasonic nebulizer, the polymer/CNT solution was then aerosolized into micro-sized droplets and finally turned into solidified polymer/CNT composite particles by gas-phase drying process. As the results of SEM and TEM analysis, CNTs were found to be homogeneously immobilized in the polymer matrix particles due to rapid drying process in the gas phase. For comparison purpose, (i) the polymer/CNTs composite particles prepared by aerosol processing method and (ii) polymer/CNTs sheets prepared by simple solution-evaporation method were employed to form polymer/CNTs composite thin films using a hot press. As the result, the aerosol processing of composite particles was found to be a much more effective method to form homogeneously distributed-CNTs in the polymer matrix thin film.
To examine the detectability of the aerosol and/or Yellow dust from China crossing over the Yellow sea, three works carried out as follows , Firstly, a comparison was made of the visible(VIS), water vapor(WV), and Infrared(IR) images of the GMS-5 and NOAA/AVHRR on the cases of yellow sand event over Korea. Secondly, the spectral radiance and reflectance(%) was observed during the yellow sand phenomena on April, 1998 in Seoul using the GER-2600 spectroradiometer, which observed the reflected radiance from 350 to 2500 nm in the atmosphere. We selected the optimum wavelength for detecting of the yellow sand from this observation, considering the effects of atmospheric absorption. Finally, the atmospheric radiance emerging from the LOWTRAN-7 radiative transfer model was simulated with and without yellow sand, where we used the estimated aerosol column optical depth ($\tau$ 673 nm) in the Meteorological Research Institute and the d'Almeida's statistical atmospheric aerosol radiative characteristics. The image analysis showed that it was very difficult to detect the yellow sand region only by the image processing because the albedo characteristics of the sand vary irregularly according to the density, size, components and depth of the yellow sand clouds. We found that the 670-680 nm band was useful to simulate aerosol characteristics considering the absorption band from the radiance observation. We are now processing the simulation of atmospheric radiance distribution in the range of 400-900 nm. The purpose of this study is to present the preliminary results of the aerosol and/or Yellow dust detectability using the Ocean Scanning Multispectral Imager(OSMI), which will be mounted on KOMPSAT-1 as the ocean color monitoring sensor with the range of 400-900 nm wavelength.
The GOCI atmospheric correction overland surfaces is essential for the time-series analysis of terrestrial environments with the very high temporal resolution. We develop an operational GOCI atmospheric correction method over land surfaces, which is rather different from the one developed for ocean surface. The GOCI atmospheric correction method basically reduces gases absorption and Rayleigh and aerosol scatterings and to derive surface reflectance from at-sensor radiance. We use the 6S radiative transfer model that requires several input parameters to calculate surface reflectance. In the sensitivity analysis, aerosol optical thickness was the most influential element among other input parameters including atmospheric model, terrain elevation, and aerosol type. To account for the highly variable nature of aerosol within the GOCI target area in northeast Asia, we generate the spatio-temporal aerosol maps using AERONET data for the aerosol correction. For a fast processing, the GOCI atmospheric correction method uses the pre-calculated look up table that directly converts at-sensor radiance to surface reflectance. The atmospheric correction method was validated by comparing with in-situ spectral measurements and MODIS reflectance products. The GOCI surface reflectance showed very similar magnitude and temporal patterns with the in-situ measurements and the MODIS reflectance. The GOCI surface reflectance was slightly higher than the in-situ measurement and MODIS reflectance by 0.01 to 0.06, which might be due to the different viewing angles. Anisotropic effect in the GOCI hourly reflectance needs to be further normalized during the following cloud-free compositing.
Monthly-mean aerosol parameters derived from the 1998-2004 SeaWiFS observations over East Asian waters are analyzed. SeaWiFS GAC Level 1 data covering the Northeast Asian area are collected and processed by the standard atmospheric correction algorithm released by the SeaWiFS Project to produce daily aerosol optical thickness (AOT) and ${{\AA}}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent imageries. Monthly mean AOT and ${{\AA}}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent values are extracted from the daily composite images for six study areas chosen from the surrounding waters of Japan. A slight increasing trend of ${{\AA}}ngstr{\ddot{o}}m$ exponent is found and interpreted as about 4-5% increase in submicron fraction of aerosol optical thickness at 550nm. Two cloud screening methods, including the standard cloud masking method of SeaWiFS and the one based on the local variance method, are applied to the SeaWiFS data processing, in an attempt to inspect the influence to the observed statistical uptrend which probably induced by different cloud mask algorithms. The variability comes from the different cloud masking algorithms are discussed.
Flame aerosol synthesis technology refers to the formation of fine particles from gases in flame and is widely used in practical materials processing. In this paper, an experimental investigation was performed on growth of the silica particles that were generated in $H_2/O_2$ Diffusion Flame by the direct injection or TEOS using Electro-spraying method. in this flame aerosol synthesis, four main parameters or nos interaction (flame temperature, residence time or particle in flame, TEOS flow rate, applied voltage) for particle generation and growth was investigated along the axial direction above the burner. A fairly monodisperse non-aggregated particles were successfully obtained.
The Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) on board the Communication Ocean Meteorological Satellite (COMS), the first geostationary ocean color sensor, requires accurate atmospheric correction since its eight bands are also affected by atmospheric constituents such as gases, molecules and atmospheric aerosols. Unlike gases and molecules in the atmosphere, aerosols can interact with sunlight by complex scattering and absorption properties. For the purpose of qualified ocean remote sensing, understanding of aerosol-radiation interactions is needed. In this study, we show micro-physical and optical properties of aerosols using the Optical Property of Aerosol and Cloud (OPAC) aerosol models. Aerosol optical properties, then, were used to analysis the relationship between theoretical satellite measured radiation from radiative transfer calculations and aerosol optical thickness (AOT) under various environments (aerosol type and loadings). It is found that the choice of aerosol type makes little different in AOT retrieval for AOT<0.2. Otherwise AOT differences between true and retrieved increase as AOT increases. Furthermore, the differences between the AOT and angstrom exponent from standard algorithms and this study, and the comparison with ground based sunphotometer observations are investigated. Over the northeast Asian region, these comparisons suggest that spatially averaged mean AOT retrieved from this study is much better than from standard ocean color algorithm. Finally, these results will be useful for aerosol retrieval or atmospheric correction of COMS/GOCI data processing.
A technique on atmospheric correction algorithm to the multi-band reflectance of Landsat TM imagery has been developed using an atmospheric radiation transfer model for eliminating the atmospheric and surface diffusion effects. Despite the fact that the technique of satellite image processing has been continually developed, there is still a difference between the radiance value registered by satellite borne detector and the true value registered at the ground surface. Such difference is caused by atmospheric attenuations of radiance energy transfer process which is mostly associated with the presence of aerosol particles in atmospheric suspension and surface irradiance characteristics. The atmospheric reflectance depend on atmospheric optical depth and aerosol concentration, and closely related to geographical and environmental surface characteristics. Therefore, when the effects of surface diffuse and aerosol reflectance are eliminated from the satellite image, it is actually corrected from atmospheric optical conditions. The objective of this study is to develop an algorithm for making atmospheric correction in satellite image. The study is processed with the correction function which is developed for eliminating the effects of atmospheric path scattering and surface adjacent pixel spectral reflectance within an atmospheric radiation model. The diffused radiance of adjacent pixel in the image obtained from accounting the average reflectance in the $7{\times}7$ neighbourhood pixels and using the land cover classification. The atmospheric correction functions are provided by a radiation transfer model of LOWTRAN 7 based on the actual atmospheric soundings over the Korean atmospheric complexity. The model produce the upward radiances of satellite spectral image for a given surface reflectance and aerosol optical thickness.
Liquid filtration by membrane filters is essential for the preparation of ultrapure water in semiconductor manufacturing processes. The separation of submicrometer particles suspended in ultrapure water with a laminated fibrous membrane filter was studied numerically and experimentally in the present work. We found that an electrical double layer around a single fiber expanded to a large extent at a low ion concentration, as in ultrapure water, and deformed toward the upstream of the fiber with increasing filtration velocity. Since an increase in the electrical double-layer thickness leads to a decrease in the electrical potential gradient, particles with the same polarity as the fiber approach the fiber more easily and are captured at a high filtration velocity. Experimental results also confirmed that the collection efficiency of polystyrene latex(PSL) particles through a PTFE filter became higher as the filtration velocity increased.
Flexible electronics are the electronics on flexible substrates such as a plastic, fabric or paper, so that they can be folded or attached on any curved surfaces. They are currently recognized as one of the most innovating future technologies especially in the area of portable electronics. The conventional vacuum deposition and photolithographic patterning methods are well developed for inorganic microelectronics. However, flexible polymer substrates are generally chemically incompatible with resists, etchants and developers and high temperature processes used in conventional integrated circuit processing. Additionally, conventional processes are time consuming, very expensive and not environmentally friendly. Therefore, there are strong needs for new materials and a novel processing scheme to realize flexible electronics. This paper introduces current research trends for flexible electronics based on (a) nanoparticles, and (b) novel processing schemes: nanomaterial based direct patterning methods to remove any conventional vacuum deposition and photolithography processes. Among the several unique nanomaterial characteristics, dramatic melting temperature depression (Tm, 3nm particle~$150^{\circ}C$) and strong light absorption can be exploited to reduce the processing temperature and to enhance the resolution. This opens a possibility of developing a cost effective, low temperature, high resolution and environmentally friendly approach in the high performance flexible electronics fabrication area.
Descriptions are provided of the automated aerosol-type classification and mass concentration calculation algorithm for real-time data processing and aerosol products in Korea Aerosol Lidar Observation Network (KALION, http://www.kalion.kr). The KALION algorithm provides aerosol-cloud classification and three aerosol types (clean continental, dust, and polluted continental/urban pollution aerosols). It also generates vertically resolved distributions of aerosol extinction coefficient and mass concentration. An extinction-to-backscatter ratio (lidar ratio) of 63.31 sr and aerosol mass extinction efficiency of $3.36m^2g^{-1}$ ($1.39m^2g^{-1}$ for dust), determined from co-located sky radiometer and $PM_{10}$ mass concentration measurements in Seoul from June 2006 to December 2015, are deployed in the algorithm. To assess the robustness of the algorithm, we investigate the pollution and dust events in Seoul on 28-30 March, 2015. The aerosol-type identification, especially for dust particles, is agreed with the official Asian dust report by Korean Meteorological Administration. The lidar-derived mass concentrations also well match with $PM_{10}$ mass concentrations. Mean bias difference between $PM_{10}$ and lidar-derived mass concentrations estimated from June 2006 to December 2015 in Seoul is about $3{\mu}g\;m^{-3}$. Lidar ratio and aerosol mass extinction efficiency for each aerosol types will be developed and implemented into the KALION algorithm. More products, such as ice and water-droplet cloud discrimination, cloud base height, and boundary layer height will be produced by the KALION algorithm.
