  • The digital dust indicator (Sibata P-5), one of the direct·reading instruments was evaluated for the respirable dust in the underground coal mine environments. As a reference, respirable dust was determined using three cyclones and/or impactors. All the tests were performed on aerosol in twenty underground coal mines. The coefficients of mass-relative concentration were $0.067{\pm}0.054$ (Mean$\pm$Standard deviation) (range: 0.006-0.172). The relationship between relative concentration and temperature was not significant statistically. Also, the relationship of relative concentration and relative humidity was not significant. Mass concentration and relative concentration were $5.31{\pm}5.22mg/m^3$ and $162{\pm}163$ CPM ($Mean{\pm}Standard$ deviation) respectively. The range of mass concentration was $1.22-22.69mg/m^3$; relative concentration 16-628 CPM. The relationship of mass concentration and relative concentration was not significant in these ranges.

  • In the present study, a control methodology utilizing airborne silver nanoparticles is suggested and tested with respect to its potential to control Gram-positive Staphylococcus epidermidis and Bacillus subtilis, and Gram-negative Escherichia coli bacteria bioaerosols deposited on filters. As it is known that the Gram-negative bacteria are sensitive to airflow exposure, the main focus of this study for testing the airborne silver nanoparticles effect was the Gram-positive Staphylococcus epidermidis and Bacillus subtilis bacteria bioaerosols whereas Escherichia coli bioaerosols were utilized for comparison. Airborne bacteria and airborne silver nanoparticles were quantitatively generated in an experimental system. Bioaerosols deposited on the filter were exposed to airborne silver nanoparticles. The physical and biological properties of the airborne bacteria and airborne silver nanoparticles were measured via aerosol measurement devices. From the experimental results, it was demonstrated that this method utilizing airborne silver nanoparticles offers potential as a bioaerosol control methodology.

  • A new technique, namely the combination of satellite and trajectory analysis (CSTA), for exploring the spatio-temporal distribution information of volcanic ash plume (VAP) from volcanic eruption. CSTA uses the satellite derived ash property data and a matching forward-trajectories, which can generate airmass history pattern for specific VAP. In detail, VAP properties such as ash mask, aerosol optical thickness at 11 ${\mu}m$ ($AOT_{11}$), ash layer height, and effective radius from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-radiometer (MODIS) satellite were retrieved, and used to estimate the possibility of the ash forecasting in local atmosphere near volcano. The use of CSTA for Iceland's Eyjafjallaj$\ddot{o}$kull volcano erupted in May 2010 reveals remarkable spatial coherence for some VAP source-transport pattern. The CSTA forecasted points of VAP are consistent with the area of MODIS retrieved VAP. The success rate of the 24 hour VAP forecast result was about 77.8% in this study. Finally, the use of CSTA could provide promising results for VAP monitoring and forecasting by satellite observation data and verification with long term measurement dataset.

  • Environmental fate of ionizable organic pollutants such as perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are of increasing interest but has not been well understood because of uncertain values for parameters related with atmospheric interphase partitioning behavior. In the present study, not only the values for air-water partition coefficient (KAW) and dissociation constant (pKa) of PFAAs were induced by adjusting to in situ measurements of air-water distribution coefficient between vapor phase and rainwater but also gas-particle partition coefficients were also estimated using three-phase partitioning model of ionizable organic pollutants, in situ measurements of PFAAs in aerosol and air vapor phase, and obtained parameter values. The pKa values of PFAAs we obtained were close to the minimum values suggested in literature except for perfluorooctane sulfonic acids, and COSMOtherm-modeled KAW values were assessed to more appropriate among suggested values. When applying parameter values we obtained, it was predicted that air particle-associated fate and transport of PFAAs could be negligible and PFAAs could distribute ubiquitously along the transection from urban to rural region by pH-dependent phase transfer in air. Our study is expected to have some implications in prediction of the environmental redistribution of other ionizable organic compounds.

  • Based on the measurement data of the particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to a nominal 10 ${\mu}m$ (PM10) by the ${\beta}$-ray absorption method (BAM) equipped with an inlet heater and the gravimetric method (GMM) at two coastal sites in Korea, the optimal inlet heater temperature was estimated. By using a gas/particle equilibrium model, Simulating Composition of Atmospheric Particles at Equilibrium 2 (SCAPE2), water content in aerosols was estimated with varying temperature to find the optimal temperature increase to make the PM10 concentration by BAM comparable to that by GMM. It was estimated that the heated air temperature inside the BAM should be increased up to $35{\sim}45^{\circ}C$ at both sites. At this temperature range, evaporation of volatile aerosol components was minor. Similar ($30{\sim}50^{\circ}C$) temperature range was also obtained from the calculation based on the absolute humidity which changed with ambient absolute humidity and chemical composition of hygroscopic species.

  • Many parts of problems in livestock industry today are associated with organic dust. Endotoxin and toxic gasses on the surface of dust and dust itself can cause aesthetic displeasure and respiratory disease. It also reduces livestock productivity by suppressing immunity of animals and carrying microbes causing animal disease. However, dust level of cattle farm was rarely reported in Korea, and regulation for cattle farm worker does not exist. In this paper, dust concentration and environmental condition were regularly monitored in a commercial Korean native cattle farm. The measurement was conducted according to location and working activities. From the measurement, distribution of dust concentration was affected by wind environment, as the result of natural ventilation. TMR mixer was a major source of dust in target cattle house. The maximum inhalable dust concentration was 637.8 times higher than exposure limit as feed dropped into the TMR mixer. It was expected that dust generation could be affected by particle size and drop height of feed. This study suggests potential risk of dust in cattle farm, and necessity for latter study. Effect of aerodynamic condition and TMR processing should be investigated for dust reduction study.

  • The objective of this study is to provide fundamental data for pertinent management of indoor air quality through investigating the size-based characteristics of bioaerosol distributed in the general hospital. Measurement sites are main lobby, ICU, ward and laboratory and total five times were sampled with six-stage cascade impactor. Based on the result of this study, concentrations of airborne bacteria and fungi were the highest in main lobby as followed by an order of ward, ICU and laboratory. Concentrations of airborne bacteria was generally higher than those of airborne fungi and the ratio of indoor and outdoor concentration of both exceeded 1.0 in all the measurement sites of the general hospital. The predominant genera of airborne bacteria identified in the general hospital were Staphylococcus spp.(50%), Micrococcus spp.(15-20%), Corynebacterium spp.(5-20%), and Bacillus spp.(5-15%). On the other hand, the predominant genera of airborne fungi identified in the general hospital were Cladosporium spp.(30%), Penicillium spp.(20-25%), Aspergillus spp.(15-20%), and Alternaria spp.(10-20%). In regard to size distribution of bioaerosol, the detection rate was generally highest on 5 stage($1.1-2.1{\mu}m$) for airborne bacteria and on 1 stage(>$7.0{\mu}m$) for airborne fungi. Cleanliness of facilities in the general hospital and condition of HVAC system should be monitored regularly to prevent indoor air contamination by airborne microorganisms.

  • In order to verify the enhancement of ozone and carbon monoxide (CO) during springtime in East Asia, we investigated weather conditions and data from remote sensors, air quality models, and air quality monitors. These include the geopotential height archived from the final (FNL) meteorological field, the potential vorticity and the wind velocity simulated by the Meteorological Mesoscale Model 5 (MM5), the back trajectory estimated by the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model, the total column amount of ozone and the aerosol index retrieved from the Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer (TOMS), the total column density of CO retrieved from the Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT), and the concentration of ozone and CO simulated by the Model for Ozone and Related Chemical Tracers (MOZART). In particular, the total column density of CO, which mightoriginate from the combustion of fossil fuels and the burning of biomass in China, increased in East Asia during spring 2000. In addition, the enhancement of total column amounts of ozone and CO appeared to be associated with both the upper cut-off low near 500 hPa and the frontogenesis of a surface cyclone during a weak Asian dust event. At the same time, high concentrations of ozone and CO on the Earth's surface were shown at the Seoul air quality monitoring site, located at the surface frontogenesis in Korea. It was clear that the ozone was invaded by the downward stretched vortex anomalies, which included the ozone-rich airflow, during movement and development of the cut-off low, and then there was the catalytic photochemical reaction of ozone precursors on the Earth's surface during the day. In addition, air pollutants such as CO and aerosol were tracked along both the cyclone vortex and the strong westerly as shown at the back trajectory in Seoul and Busan, respectively. Consequently, the maxima of ozone and CO between the two areas showed up differently because of the time lag between those gases, including their catalytic photochemical reactions together with the invasion from the upper troposphere, as well as the path of their transport from China during the weak Asian dust event.

  • Size -segregated measurements of aerosol composition using 8-stage DRUM impactor are used to determine the transport of natural and anthropogenic aerosols at Gosan site from 29 March to 30 May in 2002. Separation of ambient aerosols by DRUM impactor offers many Advantages over other standard filtration techniques. Some of the most important advantages are the ability to segregate into details by particle tire, to better preserve chemical integrity since the air stream doesn't pars through the deposit, to collect samples as a function of time, and to have a wide variety of impaction surfaces available to match analytical needs. Although the transport of Yellow sand is a well-known phenomenon in springtime, the result of measurement shows that not only soil dust but also anthropogenic aerosols, including sulfur, enriched trace metals such as Pb, Ni, Zn. Cu, Cr, As, Se, Br, are transported to Gosan in springtime. This study combines the size- and time-resolved aerosol composition measurements with isentropic, backward air-mass trajectories in order to identify some potential source regions of anthropogenic aerosols. As a result, during the NYS period, the average concentration of PM$_{10}$ was 46$\mu\textrm{g}$/㎥, Si, Al. S, Fe, Cl, K, Ca were higher than 1,000 ng/㎥ and Ti was about 100 ng/㎥. The concentrations of Zn, Mn, Cu. Pb, Br, Rb, V, Cr, Ni. At, Se ranged between 1 and 70 ng/㎥. More than 50% typical soil elements, tuck as Al, Si, Fe, Cd. Ti, Cr, Cu, Br. were distributed in a coarse particle range(5.0-12${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). In other hand, anthropogenic pollutants, luck as S, N, Vi, were mainly distributed in a fine particle range (0.09-0.56${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). During the YS period, PM$_{10}$ increased about 8 times than NYS period, and main soil elements, such as Al, Si, S, K, V, Mn, Fe also doubled in coarse particle range (1.15-12${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). But Zn, As, Pb, Cu and Se, which distributed in the time aerosols (0.09-0.56${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$), were on the same level with or decreased than NYS period. Finally. except the YS Period, coarse particles (2.5-12${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) are inferred to be influenced by soil, coal combustion, waste incineration, ferrous and nonferrous sources through similar pathways with Yellow Sand. But fine particles have different sources, such as coal combustion, gasoline vehicle, biomass burning, oil or coal combustion, nonferrous and ferrous metal sources, which are transported from China, Korea peninsula and local sources.ces.

  • Electrostatic precipitator is widely used to remove particulate matters in indoor air and industrial flue gas due to low pressure drop and high collection efficiency. However, it has a low collection efficiency for the submicrometer sized particles. Electrospraying is a potential method to increase the particle charging efficiency, which results in increased collection efficiency. Although particle charging efficiency is highly dependent upon droplet size, the effective measuring method of the droplets is still uncertain. Tap water was electrosprayed in this study, and the images of electrosprayed droplets were taken with a high speed camera coupled with several visualization methods in order to measure the droplets size. The droplet size distribution was determined by an image processing with an image-J program. As a result, a droplet measured by a laser visualization, had a half size of that by a Xenon light visualization. In addition, the experimentally measured droplet sizes were a good agreement with the predicted values suggested by $Fern{\acute{a}}ndez$ de la Mora and Loscertales(1994).
