The issue of the longitudinal stability of a WIG vehicle has been a very critical design factor since the first experimental WIG vehicle has been built. A series of studies had been performed and focused on the longitudinal stability analysis. However, most studies focused on the longitudinal stability of WIG vehicle in cruise phase, and less is available on the longitudinal static stability requirement of WIG vehicle when hydrodynamics are considered: WIG vehicle usually take off from water. The present work focuses on stability requirement for longitudinal motion from taking off to landing. The model of dynamics for a WIG vehicle was developed taking into account the aerodynamic, hydrostatic and hydrodynamic forces, and then was analyzed. Following with the longitudinal static stability analysis, effect of hydrofoil was discussed. Locations of CG, aerodynamic center in pitch, aerodynamic center in height and hydrodynamic center in heave were illustrated for a stabilized WIG vehicle. The present work will further improve the longitudinal static stability theory for WIG vehicle.
In wind tunnel experiments, the blockage effect is a very important factor which affects the test results significantly. A number of investigations into this problem, especially on the blockage correction of drag coefficient, have been carried out in the past. However, only a limited number of works have been reported on the wind tunnel blockage effect on wind-induced vibration although it is considered to be fairly important. This paper discusses the aerodynamic characteristics of the square model and square model with corner cut based on a series of the wind tunnel tests with various blockage ratios and angles of attack. From the test results, the aerodynamic behavior of square models with up to 10% blockage ratio are almost the same and square models with up to 10% blockage ratio can be tested as a group which behaves similarly.
The effect of incidence angle on the three-dimensional flow and aerodynamic loss in the downstream region of a high-turning turbine rotor blade has been investigated with a straight miniature five-hole probe. The incidence angle is changed to be +10, +5, 0, -10, -20, -30 and -40 degrees. The results show that the positive incidence reinforces the three-dimensional vortical flows within the turbine passage including the passage vortex, but the negative incidence weaken them significantly. A small increment in the positive incidence angle results in a remarkable aerodynamic loss increase, while increasing the incidence angle in the negative range leads to a very small change in the aerodynamic loss.

A new variable wing that can be swept back and forward synchronously were developed to enhance the aerodynamic and stability characteristics of a high speed airplane. The configuration of the new variable wing changes in such a way that inner part of the wing sweeps forward and outer part of the wing sweeps backward, the shift of aerodynamic center of the wing is small, therfore the static margin that is required for the stability of a airplane is not affected. In this study, various configurations of wing models by combined swept back and forward were designed and a wind tunnel tests were conducted to investigate the aerodynamic characteristics of these variable wings. The experimental results showed that the variable wing by combined swept back and forward has no effect on the pitching moment coefficient affecting on an aircraft stability margin and enhance the aerodynamic characteristics for a given approach angle of attack.
Wind tunnel tests are performed so as to investigate the aerodynamic drag characteristics of HEMU-400x, next generation Korean high speed train. The experiments of 1/20 scaled 5-car train model are done at 30, 40, 50, 60m/s with a normal bogie, a bogie cover, and a streamlined shape. The flat plate with knife edge are installed to minimize the effect of boundary layer of wind tunnel for the train model. The aerodynamic drag reduction was more by a streamlined shape than by a bogie cover from a normal bogie. Based on the experimental results, the aerodynamic drag of HEMU-400x test train(6-car) was predicted. It is prediceted that More bogie cover could reduce more aerodynamic drag of the test train in replacement of normal bogies.

Oil-free turbo-compressor supported by compliant foil bearings which remove oil-contamination by elimination of the conventional ball bearing and oil lubrication systems is presented. Turbo-compressor makes two individual air compression with two impellers at operating speed, 39,000rpm. In this study, the rotordynamic effects caused by aerodynamic instability were investigated with variable mass flow rate. Correlation between frequencies of pressure fluctuation in two diffusers and those of excitation forces on rotor were clearly developed in aerodynamic unsteady region. Thus, these results show that it is beneficial to design high speed rotating turbomachinery considering coupling effect between aerodynamic instability and rotordynamic force.
The aim of this paper is to understand the time averaged pressure distributions in a high-speed centrifugal compressor channel diffuser at design and off-design flow rates. Pressure distributions from the impeller exit to the channel diffuser exit are measured and discussed far various flow rates from choke to near surge condition, and the effect of operating condition is discussed. The strong non-uniformity in the pressure distribution is obtained over the vaneless space and semi-vaneless space caused by the impeller-diffuser interaction. As the flow rate increases, flow separation near the throat, due to large incidence angle at the vane leading edge, increases aerodynamic blockage and reduces the aerodynamic flow area downstream. Thus the minimum pressure location occurs downstream of the geometric throat, and it is named as the aerodynamic throat. And at choke condition, normal shock occurs downstream of this aerodynamic throat. The variation in the location of the aerodynamic throat is discussed.
Aerodynamic characteristics of tandem airfoil under ground effect is investigated numerically. Some numerical results for NACA 6409 tandem airfoil are presented. The numerical results show that as being decreased distance between airfoils, the lift coefficient of leading airfoil is increased and that of trailing airfoil is decreased. Drag coefficient shows opposite property, At the same distance between leading airfoil and trailing airfoil, lower position of trailing airfoil give better tandem airfoil effect.
Open decks are a widely used deck configuration in long-span cable-stayed bridges; however, incorporating aerodynamic countermeasures are advisable to achieve better aerodynamic performance than a bluff body deck alone. A sectional model of an open deck cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 400 m was selected to conduct a series of wind tunnel tests. The influences of five practical aerodynamic countermeasures on flutter and vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance were investigated and are presented in this paper. The results show that an aerodynamic shape selection procedure can be used to evaluate the flutter stability of decks with respect to different terrain types and structural parameters. In addition, the VIV performance of $\prod$-shaped girders for driving comfortableness and safety requirements were evaluated. Among these aerodynamic countermeasures, apron boards and wind fairings can improve the aerodynamic performance to some extent, while horizontal guide plates with 5% of the total deck width show a significant influence on the flutter stability and VIV. A wind fairing with an angle of $55^{\circ}C$ showed the best overall control effect but led to more lock-in regions of VIV. The combination of vertical stabilisers and airflow-depressing boards was found to be superior to other countermeasures and effectively boosted aerodynamic performance; specifically, vertical stabilisers significantly contribute to improving flutter stability and suppressing vertical VIV, while airflow-depressing boards are helpful in reducing torsional VIV.

In this paper a conventional approach for design and analysis of subsonic air vehicle is used. First of all subsonic aerodynamic coefficients are calculated using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) tools and then wind-tunnel model was developed that integrates vehicle components including control surfaces and initial data is validated as well as refined to enhance aerodynamic efficiency of control surfaces. Experimental data and limited computational fluid dynamics solutions were obtained over a Mach number range of 0.5 to 0.8. The experimental data show the component build-up effects and the aerodynamic characteristics of the fully integrated configurations, including control surface effectiveness. The aerodynamic performance of the fully integrated configurations is comparable to previously tested subsonic vehicle models. Mathematical model of the dynamic equations in 6-Degree of Freedom(DOF) is then simulated using MATLAB/SIMULINK to simulate trajectory of vehicle. Effect of altitude on range, Mach no and stability is also shown. The approach presented here is suitable enough for preliminary conceptual design. The trajectory evaluation method devised accurately predicted the performance for the air vehicle studied. Formulas for the aerodynamic coefficients for this model are constructed to include the effects of several different aspects contributing to the aerodynamic performance of the vehicle. Characteristic parameter values of the model are compared with those found in a different set of similar air vehicle simulations. We execute a set of example problems which solve the dynamic equations to find the aircraft trajectory given specified control inputs.
