We studied the possibility on the application of the Thermophilic Aerobic Oxidation (TAO) process to anaerobic digestate stabilization. In treating digestate with TAO reactor the internal temperature of the reactor was increasing higher and $51^{\circ}C$ and over was maintained after 6 days on. The physiochemical compositions of liquids increased from pH 8.1 to 9.8 and EC decreased from 29.8 to 12.0 mS/cm in treating process of digestate with TAO reactor. CODcr decreased from 22,654 to 18,843 mg/L, showed about 16.82% of remove efficiency. TN and $NH_4-N$ decreased from 4,813 to 1,733 mg/L, from 3,815 to 812 mg/L respectively, which showed about 64.0% and 78.7% of removal efficiency respectively.
Two combined autothermal thermophilic aerobic digestion (ATAD) and biofilter (BF) systems were operated to treat the piggery wastewater and the ammonia offgas. Experimental results indicated that the organic removal efficiency of ATAD-2, operated with oxygen, was higher than that of ATAD-1, operated with air. The concentration of ammonia in ATAD-2 offgas was higher compared to ATAD-1 offgas, but the total amount of ammonia produced from ATAD-2 was less than that from ATAD-1 due to the lower oxygen flowrate. The ammonia gas produced from both ATAD reactors was successfully removed by the BF. The BF-1, connected with ATAD-1, removed 93% of ammonia at the loading rate of $9.4g\;NH_3-N/m^3/hr$. The BF-2, connected with ATAD-2, removed 95% of ammonia gas at the loading rate of $8.1g\;NH_3-N/m^3/hr$. As the nitrification process continued, pH value of recirculating solution continuously decreased due to the accumulation of nitrate. When the ammonia loading rate was less than $22.7g\;NH_3-N/m^3/h$, the proper replacing cycle of recirculating solution was in the range of 10 to 11 days. Almost 90% of total mass of nitrogen fed into the each BF was confirmed from the mass balance on nitrogen.
This study was carried out to find deodorization management method of the efflux from swine slurry treated by thermophilic aerobic oxidation reactor. Three kinds of deodorization methods in Lab-scale reactors, were used in this experiment; No treatment, air injection treatment(50$m\ell$ air/min. $\ell$) and inoculumn of photrophic bacteria treatement(108 cell(Most probable number, MPN)/$m\ell$). The concentration of volatile fatty acids(VFAs), hydrogen sulfide(H2S), and ammonia(NH3) were analyzed during the treatment period(50 days). The major results obtained as follows. 1. Air injection method to efflux showed very high removal effect on malodorants such as VFAs, hydrogen sulfide(H2B). But ammonia(NH3) was emitted to much. 2. PTB inoculum method was also effective in removal of malodorants, VFAs, Hydrogen sulfide(H2S), when it was applied to the efflux. 3. We found that the concentrations of malodorants, VFAs, H2S, NH3 had some relatinships with the pH, ORP, BOD in the efflux.

In this study, the feasibility of a single-stage thermophilic aerobic process for the treatment of high-strength food wastewater produced from the recycling process of food wastes was examined to substitute anaerobic digestion process. Also, the removal and stability of thermophilic aerobic process were assessed according to the changes of hydraulic retention times (HRTs) and organic loading rates (OLRs). When the OLR increased from 9.2 to $37.2kgCOD/m^3d$, a pH value in R1 (HRT : 5 d) significantly decreased to 5.0, due to the organic acid accumulation. On the other hand, the pH value in R2 (HRT : 10 d) was stable and R2 showed the high removal of COD, organic acid and lipid, even though the OLR increased from 4.6 to $18.6kgCOD/m^3d$. In R1, the COD loading rates for COD removal was suddenly dropped, as the COD loading rate increased from 18.6 to $28.4kgCOD/m^3d$. In contrast, R2 showed that the COD loading rates for COD removal increased with regard to increment in the loading rates of 3.61, 7.05, 9.43 and $12.2kgCOD/m^3d$, indicative of the high COD removal efficiency. Therefore, the results demonstrated that over 10-d HRT, the high concentration of raw food wastewater was efficiently treated in the single-stage thermophilic aerobic process.

This study was conducted to evaluate production of complex odor and 12 specific odorous compounds in a pilot-scale (capacity : $100m^3$) ultra thermophilic aerobic composting. There were three types input: municipal wasted sludge, livestock manure and slurry, and food waste produced in Jung-Eb city. Each raw material was mixed with seed material and operated for two periods (1st : 50 days, 2nd : 60days). During composting, the temperature hit $90{\sim}95^{\circ}C$ after every mixing in both periods. Therefore, it was concluded that increasing temperature also saves the time which required for composting and high reduction of organics and water contents. The primary odorous compounds were ammonia, methyl mercaltan, dimethyl disulfide and trimethylamine. The concentration of the primary compounds and complex odor during the operation were higher than those on final day and most compounds did not exceed the allowable exhaust standard for odor. Also, it was found that optimal mixing time and control of high temperature are the most important parameters for odor control in ultra thermophilic aerobic composting.
This study analyzed temperature increase, microorganism changes, and inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms in pig slurry when treated with thermophilic microorganisms in Thermophilic Aerobic Oxidation(TAO) system. An amount of $6 m^3$ of pig slurry was treated in an $18 m^3(3.0\times2.5\times2.4 m)$ reactor for 5 to 7 days in two groups: the control of pig slurry only and the treatment of pig slurry with 6 liters of thermophilic microorganism(Bacillus sp.). To study the microorganism changes in the reactor, the populations of aerobic mesophilic microorganisms, thermophilic microorganisms and general pathogens were analyzed. To study the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms, the levels of E. coli, Salmonella sp, Crytosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia were analyzed. The temperature inside the reactor ranged from 18 to $62^{\circ}C$ for the control while far the treatment group it ranged from 18 to $66^{\circ}C$, showing a slightly higher array. With regard to changes in microorganisms, both mesophilic and thermophilic organisms decreased from $3.1\times10^6$ to $1.2\times10^2$ CFU/ml and from $1.0\times10^4$ to $8.0\times10^1$ CFU/ml, respectively, in the control. In the treatment, on the other hand, mesophilic organisms decreased from $3.0\times10^8$ CFU/ml to $8.6\times10^5$ CFU/ml while thermophilic organisms increased sharply from $2.0\times10^6$ to $1.2\times10^8$ CFU/ml. For pathogens, Salmonella and Giardia were not detected either before or after the treatment, while E. coli and C. parvum were found to be $10^5$ CFU/ml each before treatment and negative after it. From this experiment, it was concluded that thermophilic microorganisms could effectively sanitize liquid compost by generating high temperature in the TAO system, which in turn would inhibit the growth of pathogenic organisms.
TAO system was applied to treatment of piiggery slurry. In the experiments, the volume of influx was differentiated in four types. The features of operation, evaporation rate, and efficiency of successive treatment were drawn. The results are; 1. During the operation, the inside temperature was maintained at over $60^{\circ}C$ with the highest $70.2^{\circ}C$. 2. The evaporation rate of influx volume was 31.4%. And the evaporation volume of per square meter was $108{\;}\ell/\textrm{m}^2$; slightly different from $120{\;}\ell/\textrm{m}^2$ of batch type. 3. The VFAs was decreased by 95% (from $1,538lmg/{\ell}$ in influx to $72.9mg/{\ell}$ in Efflux). Thus, successive operation of TAO system is considered to be possible.
Since there are very limited numbers of thermophilic anaerobic digesters being operated, it is often difficult to start up a new one using sludge from an existing reactor as a seed. However, for obvious reasons it seems few attempts have been made to compare the start-up performance of thermophilic anaerobic digestion using different sources of seed sludges. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the start-up performance of anaerobic digestion using aerobic Waste Activated Sludge (WAS) from a plant and mesophilic Anaerobic Digested Sludge (ADS) as the seed source at both mesophilic ($35^{\circ}C$) and thermophilic ($55^{\circ}C$) temperatures. In this study, two experiments were conducted. First, thermophilic anaerobic reactors were seeded with WAS (VSS = 4,400 mg/L) and ADS (VSS = 14,500 mg/L) to investigate start-up performance with a feed of acetate as well as propionate. The results show that WAS started to produce $CH_4$ soon after acetate feeding without a lag time, while ADS had a lag time of 10 days. When the feed was changed to propionate, WAS removed propionate down to below the detection limit of 10 mg/L, while ADS removed little propionate and produced little $CH_4$. Second, in order to further compare the methanogenic activity of WAS and ADS, both mesophilic and thermophilic reactors were operated. WAS acclimated to anaerobic conditions shortly and after acclimating it produced more $CH_4$ than ADS. WAS at mesophilic temperature biodegraded acetate at the same rate as for thermophilic. However WAS at mesophilic temperature biodegraded propionate at a much faster rate than at thermophilic. WAS as the seed source of anaerobic digestion resulted in much better performance than ADS at both mesophilic and thermophilic temperatures for both acetate and propionate metabolism.

For the probiotic feed production from residual food waste, aerobic liquid fermentation was conducted by thermophilic bacteria. 11 Strains of bacteria were isolated from several soil sources and residual food waste. Screening was carried by shaking incubator for the separation of thermophilic strain at $55^{\circ}C$. The isolated strains were tested for enzyme activities such as ${\alpha}$-amylase and protease. 6 Bacterial strains were chosen and were adapted by repeated fermentation processes in food waste substrate. The viable cell count of them at final fermentation stages were shown as $3-7{\times}10^9/ml$ in 2L-jar fermenter. Among them B3, B6 showed higher enzyme activity. By the mixed fermentation of B3, B6 and Bacillus stearothermophilus, the highest viable cell count reached to $1.4{\times}10^{10}/ml$ in 8 hours.
Anaerobic digestion has many advantages over the more conventional aerobic treatment processes such as low levels of excess sludge production, low space (area) requirements, and the production of valuable biogas. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of organic loading rate of anaerobic digestion on thermophilic($55^{\circ}C$) and mesophilic($35^{\circ}C$) conditions. Fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) method was also used to study the microbial community in the reactors. The stabilizing time in mesophilic anaerobic reactors was shorter as approximately 20 days than 40 days in the thermophilic anaerobic reactors. The amount of methane production rate in anaerobic reactors was independent of the concentrations of supplied substrates and the amount of methanogens. When the microbial diversity in the mesophilic and thermophilic reactors, which had been treated with acetate-based artificial wastewater, were compared, it was found that methanogenesis was carried out by microbial consortia consisting of bacteria and archaea such as methanogens. To investigate the activity of bacterial and archaeal populations in all anaerobic reactors, the amount of acetate was measured. Archaea were predominant in all reactors. Interestingly, Methanothrix-like methanogens appeared in mesophilic anaerobic reactors with high feed substrate concentrations, whereas it was not observed in thermophilic anaerobic reactors.
