A noise prediction method of axial flow fan is developed by incorporating through-flow method and vortex shedding noise model. Fan noise is assumed to be generated due to the pressure fluctuation induced by wake vortices of fan blades and radiate as diploe distribution. The wake vortices are analyzed by combining Karman vortex street model and through-flow analysis results, and the vortex-induced fluctuating pressure on blade surface is calculated by thin airfoil theory. The predicted sound pressure levels and directivity patterns of fan noise by the present method are favorably compared with fan noise test data. Furthermore, the present method is shown to be very useful for predicting the aero-acoustic performance map of the fan operated at off-design point.
In this research, an external noise distribution of a HST has been analyzed by using a ray tracing techniques. An aero-dynamic noise generated from a bogie has been considered as a major noise source. Then a distribution of the noise on the outside of the vehicle is calculated using a ray noise technique. The models simulated are two different acoustic fields: an open field and a tunnel. In order to evaluate the noise effects, an exterior structure has been modified by using a different length of skirts. Various application schemes of reducing an environmental noise level will be expected for a HST based on this research.
The suction nozzle of a vacuum cleaner was modified to enhance the power performance and to reduce the airflow-induced acoustic noise. The suction power efficiencies of the vacuum cleaner were measured for various nozzles; (1) original nozzle, (2) original nozzle with modified trench height, (3) original nozzle with modified connecting chamber, and (4) a combination of (2) and (3). In addition, the suction pressure and sound pressure level around the suction nozzle were measured to validate the reduction of acoustic noise. The power efficiency and mean suction pressure increased when the trench height of the suction nozzle was increased. This was attributed to the suppression of the flow separation in the suction channel. Modification of the connecting chamber in the original nozzle, which had an abrupt contraction from a rectangular chamber into a circular pipe, into a smooth converging contraction substantially improved the suction flow into the connecting pipe. When both modifications were applied simultaneously, the resulting suction nozzle was more effective from the viewpoints of aerodynamic power increase and sound pressure level reduction.
Recent years have witnessed speed up of moving vehicles such as high-speed of trains. Increase in speed entails concomitant increase in turbulent air flow which contributes toward aerodynamic noise. The proposed method for aerodynamic noise reduction is based on a biomimetic design of owl feather. The five morphological parameters of the owl feather is extracted from close observation, and simulation cases are constructed by applying design of experiments methodology. Swirling strength for each case is obtained through steady-state CFD analysis, and key morphological parameters that affect the turbulence are identified. Large eddy simulations (LES) are then performed on selected cases to predict the air turbulence. Different cases show varying vorticity distribution levels which is expected to lead to varying aerodynamic noise levels.
InThe purpose of this work is to analyze the flow characteristics and aerodynamic noise generated from a shroud fan at a constant 2,100 rpm using LES and FW-H noise model provided in the commercial code, FLUENT. Velocity distributions around the shroud fan obtained by using FLUENT code show good agreement with experimental results. The sound pressure level is decreased by about 6 dB as the distance from the fan increases twice. The directivity at 1st BPF shows a tendency of increasing SPL toward the axis of rotation.
The interior vehicle noise due to the exterior aerodynamic field is an important topic in the acoustic design of a car. The air flow detached from the A-pillar and impacting the side windows are of particular interest as they are located close to the driver / passenger and provides a lower insulation index than the trimmed car body parts. This paper presents a numerical analysis method for a simplified vehicle model. The internal air cavity including trim component are included in the simulation. The car body includes the windshield and two side windows. The body is made of aluminum and trimmed with porous layers. The methodology proposed in this paper relies on two steps: the first step involves the computation of the exterior flow and turbulence induced non-linear acoustic field using PowerFlow. The second step consists in the computation of the vibro-acoustic transmission through the window using the finite element vibro-acoustic solver Actran. Additionally in order to validate the numerical process, an experimental set-up has been created based on the simplified vehicle. The vibration of the windshield and windows, the total wind noise level results and the relative contributions of the different windows are then presented and compared to measurements. The influence of the flow yaw angle (different wind orientation) is also assessed.
This work presents a numerical investigation of the aerodynamics and aero acoustics of the HVAB rotor in hover conditions. Two fully turbulent models are employed, the one-equation Spalart-Allmaras model and the two-equation k-ω SST model. Transition effects are investigated as well using the Langtry-Menter γ-Re θt transition transport model. The noise generation and propagation are being investigated using the Ffows-Williams Hawking model for far-field noise and the broadband model for near-field noise. Comparisons with other numerical solvers and with the PSP rotor test data are presented. The results are presented in terms of thrust and power coefficients, the figure of merit, surface pressure distribution, and Sound pressure level. Velocity, pressure, and vortex structures generated by the rotor are also shown in this work. In addition, this work investigates the contribution of different blade regions to the overall noise levels and emphasizes the importance of considering specific areas for future improvements.
Unsteady compressible Euler equation is solved and the high-order, high-resolution numerical solver, physical boundary condition, adaptive nonlinear artificial dissipation model and conformal mapping are applied to computation of steady transonic flow and unsteady acoustics. The acoustic characteristics of axi-symmetric duct and two dimensional straight/S channel are studied and the computation results shows good agreements with linear analysis. In transonic case, local time stepping and canceling-the-residual techniques are used for convergence acceleration. The aspect of flow and acoustics in S-channel and the Pattern of noise radiation is changed by inflow Mach no. and static pressure at fan-face.

In recent years, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been developed and studied for various applications, including drone deliveries, broadcasting, scouting, crop dusting, and firefighting. To enable the wide use of UAVs, their exact aeroacoustic characteristics must be assessed. In this study, a noise prediction method for a ducted fan UAV with complicated geometry was developed. In general, calculation efficiency is increased by simulating a ducted fan UAV without the struts that fix the fuselage to the ducts. However, numerical predictions of noise and aerodynamics differ according to whether struts are present. In terms of aerodynamic performance, the total thrust with and without struts is similar owing to the tendency of the thrust of a blade to offset the drag of the struts. However, in aeroacoustic simulations, the strut effect should be considered in order to predict the UAV's noise because noise from the blades can be changed by the strut effect. Modelling of the strut effect revealed that the dominant tonal noises were closely correlated with the blade passage frequency of the experimental results. Based on the successful detection of noise sources from a ducted fan UAV system, using the proposed noise contribution contour, methods for noise reduction can be suggested by comparing numerical results with measured noise profiles.
