In order to find the way to solve the problem of sewage sludge discharge into the ocean, the sludge solubilization by ultrasonic and the improvement methods of wastewater treatment process were studied. In the membrane bioreactor the sludge retention time was stepwise increased from 5.1 day to 442 days where the biomass average concentration has been increased from $c_B$=3.4 $gTSSL^{-1}$ to $c_B$=14.5 $gTSSL^{-1}$ respectively. At the same time, the biomass yield coefficients were reduced from 0.5-0.7 at SRT=5.1 day to 0.005-0.007 at SRT=442 days which means the reduction of sludge production. Oxygen mass transfer coefficients and ${\alpha}$-factor were investigated with changing stirrer speed to find the relation between the high biomass concentration and aeration efficiency in the propeller loop reactor. As a result of sludge solubilization, the solubilization of sludge by ultrasound was increased with increasing energy input and it led to improved anaerobic digestion rate with more biogas production than that of nonsolubilized sewage sludge.
For effective treatment of wastewater containing ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N), AT2, AT9, and AT12 strains, having high total organic carbon (TOC) removal capability, and FN47, possessing excellent ammonia nitrogen removal capability present in the activated sludge in the aeration tank of food wastewater treatment plants, were isolated and identified. The cells of these isolated strains were used for microbial augmentation with FIW-1 in the defatted rice bran as a medium to treat industrial wastewater. The investigation of the cultural characteristics of these isolated strains in the aeration tank showed that the affinities for substrate of the isolated strains were extremely high, of which AT12 (Alcaligenes sp. AT12) was the highest among the isolated strains. Ammonium nitrogen removal efficiency in the food wastewater was 71% in the isolated strain FN47 (Microbacterium sp. FN47) treatment group. When only activated sludge was added in the lab scale pilot using food wastewater during continuous culture experiment, the TOC removal efficiency was 63%. Meanwhile, the removal efficiency of 92% was obtained when the microbial augmentation FIW-1 for wastewater treatment was applied. In addition, the chemical oxygen demand (COD) level from the effluent wherein microbial augmentation FIW-1 was input for the initial three days in the wastewater treatment site experiment showed a treatment rate of about 43%, which was increased to 62% after an elapse of 5 days.
This study was carried out to estimate the performance of modified sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process by the application of SBR process for small advanced wastewater treatment plant. Organic, nitrogen and phosphorus were able to remove in the unit reactor by SBR process and it would be able to select the suitable operation method. The plant was operated to achieve high performance with influent control, optimum anoxic/oxic condition using intermediate aeration method, and solid (sludge) /liquid (effluent) separation by modified decanter. The optimum operating mode was 3Cycles a day and intermediate input and aeration. Under these conditions, the treatment efficiencies were good with 60% of designed flow rate and low influent quality. When the influent concentrations of BOD and CODMn were 120.4 mg/L and 95.7 mg/L, respectively. The effluent concentrations of BOD and CODMn were 6.8 mg/L and 11.0 mg/L, respectively. The average removal efficiencies of BOD and CODMn were 94.4% and 88.5%, respectively. The removal efficiencies of T-N and T-P were 69.6% and 73.6%, respectively when the average T-N and T-P concentrations were 32.2mg/L and 4.65mg/L, respectively. The T-N and T-P removal efficiencies were slightly decreased to 58.8% and 68.5%, respectively in the winter season but its were also stable efficiencies. BOD, T-N and T-P were removed by 90%. 67% and 46% respectively in the first anoxic/oxic condition, in addition to T-P was removed by 70% in the second anoxic/oxic condition. From the results, modified sequencing batch reactor (SBR) process is suitable for small advanced wastewater treatment.
This study was performed to investigate the formation and mass production of resting eggs by freshwater rotifer, Brachionus calyciflorus as influenced by different aeration supplements and exchange intervals of culture water in 15-L culture vessels and 500 L culture tanks. The maximum densities and mixis rates of the rotifers were not different between experimental group exposed to air or oxygen supplements. However, the fertilization rate and formation of resting eggs of the rotifers in the air-supplemented group were significantly higher than those in the oxygen supplemented group. In the experiment concerning exchange interval of culture water, the maximum density of the rotifers and formation of resting eggs in the batch culture were significantly higher than those in the semi-continuous culture with exchange of water every day. The formation of resting eggs per Chlorella dry weight was highest in the semi-continuous culture with exchange of water every day. The resting eggs of rotifers were produced at a density of $51.8{\sim}57.9{\times}10^6$ eggs in 500-L culture tanks. In this study, the batch culture with air is an effective method for mass production of resting eggs by the freshwater rotifer, B. calyciflorus, and the efficiency of mass production of resting eggs by this rotifer was similar to that of the seawater rotifers, B. plicatilis and B. rotundiformis.
The immobilization of nitrifier consortium was carried out for the application to recirculating aquaculture system(RAS). The abilities of $NH_4^+$-N removal by immobilized nitrifier consortia prepared with boric acid treated, ethanol treated, ad freezing-thawing treated PVA beads at the concentration 15% were examined. To identify the possibility of applying the beads in the fluidized bed reactor, characteristics of beads were evaluated. The suitable bead was boric acid treated beads which had highest ammonia removal rate of 16.09 g/$m^3$/day. It took 12 days for nitrifier consortium immobilized beads to be stable for the removal of $NH_4^+$-N. Life spans of the beads were more than three months with aggressive aeration in the fluidized ed reactor when nitrifier consortia immobilized in PVA beads were used. In order to apply the nitrifier consortium immobilized beads to aquaculture facility, the continuous reactor was used for 49 days with synthetic aquacultural water containing 2 mg/L ammonia. The highest ammonia removal rate of 31.87 g/$m^3$/day was observed when hydraulic residence time was 0.6 hour(36min.).

Photocatalytic oxidation conditions of reactant recirculation flow rate 275 mL/min, aeration rate 2 LPM and $UV+TiO_2+H_2O_2$(500 mg/L) proved to be appropriate for water including organic materials treatment. With increasing turbidity and suspended solids concentration, at turbidity 10 NTU-suspended solids concentration 29 mg/L the phenol degradation efficiency increased, which in turn decreased at turbidity 50 NTU-suspended solids concentration 170 mg/L, however no significant differences were observed, demonstrating similar results with those obtained at zero turbidity and suspended solids concentration. The degradation efficiency of phenol decreased with increasing influent phenol concentrations. The $UV+TiO_2+H_2O_2$ photocatalytic advanced oxidation process conducted is considered to be possibly applied to the drinking water treatment, and the post-treatment process of biological wastewater treatment.
This study was performed to compare the effects of chaff and sawdust as bulking materials on temperature, pH, weight and volume reduction and salinity in aerobic composting of food wastes. Volume ratios of food wastes to chaff in reactor of Control, Ch-l, Ch-2, Ch-3 and Ch-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Volume ratios of food wastes to sawdust in reactor of Control, Sd-l, Sd-2, Sd-3 and Sd-4 were 4:0, 4:1, 4:2, 4:3 and 4:4, respectively. Reactors were operated for 24 days with 1 hour stirring by 1 rpm and 2 hours aeration per day. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff and sawdust resulted in the reaction at higher reaction temperature and the elongation of the high temperature reaction period. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff and sawdust resulted in faster pH increase. In the volume ratio of 4:3 and 4:4, pH increased faster in food-chaff mixtures than in food-sawdust mixtures. The lowering of the volume ratio of food wastes to chaff and sawdust resulted in faster steady state in the weight reduction rate and the volume reduction rate. The weight reduction rates of chaff mixtures were higher than those of sawdust mixtures, but the volume reduction rates of sawdust mixtures were more higher than those of chaff mixtures. Salinity increased as composting reaction proceeded, due to reduction in mass weight. The final salinity of Control was 2.79%, and the final range of salinities of chaff and sawdust mixtures were 2.18∼2.37% and 1.86∼2.05%, respectively.
The inulinase gene (INU1) from Kluyveromyces marxianus NCYC2887 was overexpressed by using the GAL10 promotor in a ${\Delta}ga180$ strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The inulinase gene lacking the original signal sequence was fused in-frame to a mating factor ${\alpha}$ signal sequence for secretory expression. Use of the ${\Delta}ga180$ strain allowed for the galactose-free induction of inulinase expression using a glucose-only medium. Shake-flask cultivation in YPD medium produced 34.6 U/ml of the recombinant inulinase, which was approximately 13-fold higher than that produced by K. marxianus NCYC2887. It was found that the use of the ${\Delta}ga180$ strain improved the expression of inulinase in the recombinant S. cerevisiae in both aerobic and anaerobic conditions by about 2.9- and 1.7-fold, respectively. A 5-l fed-batch fermentation using YPD medium was performed under aerobic condition with glucose feeding, which resulted in the inulinase production of 31.7 U/ml at the $OD_{600}$ of 67. Ethanol fermentation of dried powder of Jerusalem artichoke, an inulin-rich biomass, was also performed using the recombinant S. cerevisiae expressing INU1 and K. marxianus NCYC2887. Fermentation in a 5-l scale fermentor was carried out at an aeration rate of 0.2 vvm, an agitation rate of 300 rpm, and with the pH controlled at 5.0. The temperature was maintained at $30^{\circ}C$ and $37^{\circ}C$, respectively, for the recombinant S. cerevisiae and K. marxianus. The maximum productivities of ethanol were 59.0 and 53.5 g/l, respectively.

A continuous feed and cyclic draw SBR process was developed to overcome flow rate fluctuation and to maximize organic matters utilization efficiency for nitrogen and phosphorus removal. The developed SBR process was operated with two parallel reactors. Influent was supplied to one reactor which was not obligately aerated. At the same time, the other reactor was just aerated without supplying influent. In addition this mode was changed periodically. Cycle time was 6hr and aeration time ratio($t_{aer}/t_{total}$) was 0.33, respectively. $COD_{cr}$ and SS removal efficiencies of 95% or higher were achieved. Nitrogen removal was so greatly influenced by influent $COD_{cr}/T-N$ ratio. At influent $COD_{cr}/T-N$ ratio of 5.7, removal efficiencies of ammonia-N, T-N and T-P were 96%, 78% and 55%, respectively. Influent $COD_{cr}/T-N$ of 4 or higher ratio was necessary to achieve 60% or higher nitrogen removal. Organic matters of influent was efficiently utilized in denitrification reaction and consumed COD has a good correlation with removed T-N(about 6.5 mgCOD/mgTN). Continuous feed and cyclic draw SBR process could be one of alternative processes for the removal of nutrients in rural area where $COD_{cr}/T-N$ ratio was low and fluctuation of flow rate was severe.

A process for the production of bioplastics from wastewater with an open microbial culture was developed and evaluated. The process consists of a selection reactor to select bacteria in feast/famine regime and an accumulation reactor to produce PHA using selected bacteria. Polyhydroxyalkanoate(PHAs) accumulating bacteria could be efficiently grown in a sequencing batch reactor(SBR) without any growth limitation. For the high production of PHA limitation such as oxygen and nutrients seemed to be needed. Accumulation experiments were performed to evaluate the level of accumulation of PHA. Limited aeration had no effect, but nutrients limitation showed high accumulation. Bacteria which were selected in the SBR could accumulate PHA till 60% of cellular dry weight in accumulation experiments under nitrogen limitation. PHA accumulation rate decreased with increasing PHA content in the cells. Clearly, PHA accumulation rate has a strong correlation with the PHA content of the cells.
