  • A diffuser, an important equipment to change kinetic energy into pressure energy, has been studied for a long time. Though experimental and theoretical researches have been done, the understanding of energy transfer and detailed mechanism of energy dissipation is unclear. As far as numerical prediction of diffuser flows are concerned, various numerical studies have also been done. On the contrary, many turbulence models have constraint to the applicability of diffuser-like complex flows, because of anisotropy of turbulence near the wall and of local nonequilibrium induced by an adverse pressure gradient. The existing $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence models have some problems in the case of being applied to complex turbulent flows. The purpose of this paper is to test the applicability of the nonlinear $k-{\epsilon}$ model concerning diffuser-like flows with expansion and streamline curvature. The results show that the nonlinear $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model predicted well the coefficient of pressure, velocity profiles and turbulent kinetic energy distributions, however the shear stress prediction was failed.

  • Hemodialysis is essential for patients with end stage renal failure. It is important to improve the patency rate and to minimize occurrence of the stenosis. Also, the blood flow to the artificial kidney can affect the blood flow characteristics through arteriovenous graft. Thus, the delivered dose are important factors for analyzing hemodynamic characteristics during hemodialysis access. In this study, the numerical analysis was performed for the effect of the delivered dose during hemodialysis access on the blood flow through the graft. As a result, The adverse pressure gradient occurred in case of a larger delivered dose through a catheter than standard dose and the flow instability increased. Also the circulation flow appeared largely at anastomotic site of the vein when the delivered dose was exceeded about half blood flow of inlet blood flow.

  • Flow over a protruding surface is investigated using numerical simulation. We consider flow between two parallel plates with a cube mounted on one side of the channel. As the flow approaches the cube, the adverse pressure gradient produces three-dimensional boundary-layer separation, resulting In the formation of horseshoe vortices. The objective of our study is to clarify both the steady and the unsteady characteristics of the vortex system. As the Reynolds number increases, the structure of the vortices near the cube becomes complex and the number of vortices increases. The distribution of skin friction on the cube-mounted wall reflects the effect of the horseshoe vortices. All these results are consistent with the experimental findings currently available.

  • Airframe-integrated Scramjet engines of NASA Langley type consist of a compressor, a combustion chamber and a nozzle. When some disturbances occur in one module of the engine, its influences are propagated to other modules. In this study, it is investigated numerically how shock waves were caused by thermal choking in one module propagate upstream and how they influence adjacent modules. The calculations are carried out in 2-dimensional supersonic viscous flow model using explicit TVD scheme in generalized coordinates. The adverse pressure gradient caused by heat addition brings about separation of the wall boundary layers and formation of the oblique shock wave that proceed to upstream. This moving shock wave formed one module blocks the flow coming into the adjacent modules, which makes the modules unstarted.

  • Horseshoe vortices are formed at the junction of an object immersed in fluid-flow and endwall plate as a result of three-dimensional boundary layer separation. This study shows preliminary results of the kinematics of such horseshoe vortices around a circular cylinder with a cavity (slot) placed upstream to disturb the primary separation line. Through the cavity, no mass flow addition (blowing) or reduction (suction) is applied. The upstream cavity weakens the adverse pressure gradient before the cavity. With the upstream cavity, a single vortex is found to form immediately upstream of the cylinder whereas a typical two vortex system is observed in the absence of the cavity. Furthermore, the strength of the single vortex tends to be reduced, resulting from the interaction with the separated flow convecting directly towards the leading edge of the cylinder.

  • Using a vortex stretching invariant term, the two-layer k-.epsilon. model has been modified to account for the extra staining of turbulence due to the mean-flow convergence and divergence. The calculations of turbulent boundary layers in a plane of symmetry are compared for experimental cases which are an axisymmetric body at an incidence of 15.deg.. The comparisons between the calculations and experimental data show that additional modifications to the dissipation rate equation have brought the significant improvement to the prediction of plane of symmetry boundary layers in the strong mean-flow convergence and divergence.

  • A numerical analysis based on two-dimensional and three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations has been carried out for double-circular-arc compressor cascades and the results are compared with available experimental data at various incidence angles. The 2-D and 3-D computational codes based on SIMPLE algorithm adopt pressure weighted interpolation method for non-staggered grid and hybrid scheme for the convertive terms. Turbulence modeling is very important for prediction of cascade flows, which are extremely complex with separation and reattachment by adverse pressure gradient. In this paper k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model with wall function is used to increase efficiency of computation times.

  • The flow characteristics on the periodically arranged semi-circular ribs in a rectangular channel for turbulent flow have been investigated numerically. The aspect ratio of the rectangular channel was AR=5, the rib height to hydraulic diameter ratio was 0.07 and rib height to channel height ratio was e/H=0.117. The v2-f turbulence model and SST k-${\omega}$ turbulence model were used to find the flow characteristics of near the wall which are suited for realistic phenomena. The numerical analysis results show turbulent flow characteristics and pressure drop at the near the wall as observed experimentally. The results predict that turbulent kinetic energy(k) is closely relative to the diffusion of recirculation flow, and v2-f turbulence model simulation results have a good agreement with experimental.
