  • Computational calculations are now successfully introduced to design liquid crystal molecules for uses in modern active-matrix displays. These material technologies are practically applied to develop novel compounds, enabling formulation of advanced liquid crystal mixtures together with a newly developed mixture purification method. Typical examples of these liquid crystal mixtures are introduced for modern displays in various applications.

  • This paper investgates the transflective liquid crystal displays (LCDs) associated with fringe-field switching (FFS) mode to achieve high image quality. In the past, several cell structures were used to fabricate transflective FFS LCDs. Their structures and characteristics are carefully examined to find their merits and demerits. In addition, we attempt to optimize cell parameters to achieve a single driving circuit.

  • We have fabricated twisted nematic (TN) cell doped by carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The CNTs with a minute amount of doping do not perturb the liquid crystal orientation in the off- and on-state. The hysteresis studies of voltage-dependent transmittance and capacitance under ac and dc electric field show that the amount of residual dc, which is related to image sticking problem in liquid crystal displays, is greatly reduced due to ion trapping by CNTs.

  • The discotic liquid crystal in compensating film used for the viewing angle improvement of the twist nematic liquid crystal display panel is analyzed. For the optical characterization of the compensating film, we measured the polarization state of the light passing through the film as the tilt angle and the azimuth angle of the film were varied, and then we compared the measured polarization state with the calculated one. Finally we suggested the best fit configuration of the discotic liquid crystal.

  • The reflective type color filter for the liquid crystal displays (LCD) was produced using cholesteric liquid crystal monomers whose phase is characterized by the unique optical features of selective reflection. Periodic micrometer scale hemi-spherical photoresist (PR) patterns were formed on glass substrates by thermal reflow method after photolithography. Cholesteric color filter films for red, green and blue light reflections were then produced and the viewing angle dependence was investigated and compared with that of reflected light on the non-patterned substrates.

  • We have fabricated twisted nematic (TN) liquid crystal cells doped by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with different CNT wt. %. With a minute amount doping, multi-walled CNTs did not perturb the liquid crystal orientations at the off- and on-state. The hysteresis studies of voltage-dependent capacitance (V-C) under the influence of electric field generated by ac and dc voltage show that the residual do, which is tightly related to image sticking problem in liquid crystal displays, is greatly reduced due to ion trapping by CNTs. Also, the V-C hysteresis shows dependency of capacitance on concentration of multi-walled CNTs.

  • We have studied how rubbing direction affects generation of disclination line in transmissive microdisplay for $90^{\circ}$ twisted nematic (TN) mode with pixel size of $22.2{\mu}m$. The rubbing direction of bottom substrate is changed from $0^{\circ}$ to $-135^{\circ}$ with a decrease step of $45^{\circ}$, and the results show that the generation regions of the disclination line are of a smallest size in $-135^{\circ}$ direction. The results were the same although the pixel size decreased. Consequently, the use of proper rubbing direction of liquid crystal can help overcome the problems of low aperture ratio and low contrast ratio in transmissive-type microdisplays. In addition, the pretilt angle of initial liquid crystal is found to make an important contribution to generation of the disclination line.

  • To understand effects of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in nematic liquid crystal (NLC) on electro-optic characteristic and orientation of the LC, we CNT-doped homogeneously-aligned NLC cells driven by in-plane field have been fabricated. The CNTs were aligned with a LC director from the initial state to below critical ac field, whereas the CNTs disturbed the LC director field above critical ac field. We observed motional textures in the form of vertical stripes in the local area between electrodes, which were associated with a deformation of the LC director orientation. This indicates that CNTs start vibrating three dimensionally with translational motion. Further, the hysterisis studies of voltage-dependent transmittance under dc electric field show that the amount of residual dc, which is related to image sticking problem in liquid crystal displays, is greatly reduced due to ion trapping by CNTS while keeping operating voltage and response time about the same compared to the un-doped LC cell.
