  • A Manufacturing process of the power steering worm blank is analyzed by FEM aimulation. The process includes mainly three operations such as indentation, extrusion, and upsetting, which was designed bya forming equipment expert. The results of simulation are summarized in terms of load-stroke relationships, die pressure distributions, effective strain distribution, and deforming patterns for each forming operation. Also, Efforts are focused to get the reason that the tool expert designed the forming process in three operations. The results of the simulation are to be useful for the next advanced process planning in terms of good dimesional accuracy, savings in material and machining, no deforaming defects and imporvements in mechanical properties.

  • Conventional fracture test of resistance spot weld had been performed without consideration of paint baking process in automobile manufacturing line. This study was aim to investigate the effect of paint baking on fracture mode and load carrying capacity in fracture test for resistance spot welded 780TRIP steels. With paint baking cycle after resistance spot welds, peel tests and microhardness were conducted on the as-welded and baked samples. Resistance spot welds in AHSS (Advanced High Strength Steels) are prone to display partial interfacial fractures during fracture test or vehicle crash. Baking cycle increased the load-carrying capacity of the resistance spot welded samples and improved the fracture appearance from partial to full button fracture for the L-type peel tests. Specially, the differences in fracture appearance are apparent when the nugget size of spot welds is small enough to produce the partial interfacial fracture. The comparison of macrohardness and microstructure between as-welded and baked samples showed that there are no large difference in change the fracture mode. However, the results of the instrumented indentation test suggested that fusion zone and HAZ of baked sample have less tensile and yield strength and proves that the tempering effects are applied and enhanced the resistance to fracture on welds with application of baking cycle.

  • Effects of annealing treatment on microstructure and mechanical property of co-sputtered TiNi thin films were studied. As-deposited films showed amorphous state. However, above annealing temperature of $500^{\circ}C$ martensite phase (B19'), precipitate phase ($Ti_2Ni$) and a small amount of parent phase ($B_2$) were present, and phase transformation behaviors were three multi-step phase transformations $B19^{\prime}{\rightarrow}B_2$ and $B_2{\rightarrow}R-phase$ and $R-phase{\rightarrow}B19^{\prime}$. Increase of martensite transformation temperature, increase of microhardness and Young's modulus of TiNi films annealed above $500^{\circ}C$ were discussed in terms of precipitate phase.

  • Three- and five-layer 3Y-YZP/12Ce- TZP composites prepared by a slip casting method have been characterized in terms of mechanical properties. The fracture strength of mutilayer c$\alpha$nposites determined in a diametral compression test was 327~534 MPa. Although the indentation strength of the materials was generally reduced with i increasing Vickers indentation load up to 300 N, the damage resistance of multilayer composites was superior compared to monolithic layer TZP material. The four-point bend strength of the layered material remained at the values of 620~674 MPa after indentation with a load of 49 N, while that of the monolithic TZP material was 129~339 MPa. The microindentation toughness of the multilayer material was $7.7~13.1\;MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$.

  • We investigated the application of tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) coatings to fabricate a glass lens manufactured using a glass molding process (GMP). In this work, ta-C coatings with different thickness (50, 100, 150 and 200 nm) were deposited on a tungsten carbide (WC-Co) mold using the X-bend filter of a filtered cathode vacuum arc. The effects of thickness on mechanical and tribological properties of the coating were studied. These ta-C coatings were characterized by atomic force microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, nano-indentation measurements, Raman spectrometry, Rockwell-C tests, scratch tests and ball on disc tribometer tests. The nano-indentation measurements showed that hardness increased with an increase in coating thickness. In addition, the G-peak position in the Raman spectra analysis was right shifted from 1520 to $1586cm^{-1}$, indicating that the $sp^3$ content increased with increasing thickness of ta-C coatings. The scratch test showed that, compared to other coatings, the 100-nm-thick ta-C coating displayed excellent adhesion strength without delamination. The friction test was carried out in a nitrogen environment using a ball-on-disk tribometer. The 100-nm-thick ta-C coating showed a low friction coefficient of 0.078. When this coating was applied to a GMP, the life time, i.e., shot counts, dramatically increased up to 2,500 counts, in comparison with Ir-Re coating.

  • This paper presents a molecular dynamics simulation-based numerical investigation of the influence of surface energy on water lubrication. Models composed of a crystalline substrate, half cylindrical tip, and cluster of water molecules are prepared for a tribological-characteristic evaluation. To determine the effect of surface energy on lubrication, the surface energy between the substrate and water molecules as well as that between the tip and water molecules are controlled by changing the interatomic potential parameters. Simulations are conducted to investigate the indentation and sliding processes. Three different normal forces are applied to the system by controlling the indentation depth to examine the influence of normal force on the lubrication of the system. The simulation results reveal that the solid surface's surface energy and normal force significantly affect the behavior of the water molecules and lubrication characteristics. The lubrication characteristics of the water molecules deteriorate with the increasing magnitude of the normal force. At a low surface energy, the water molecules are readily squeezed out of the interface under a load, thus increasing the frictional force. Contrarily, a moderate surface energy prevents expulsion of the water molecules due to squeezing, resulting in a low frictional force. At a high surface energy, although squeezing of the water molecules is restricted, similar to the case of moderate surface energy, dragging occurs at the soil surface-water molecule interface, and the frictional force increases.

  • The nature, degree, and evolution of contact damage from Hertzian contacts in silicon nitride-boron nitride composites($Si_3N_4-BN$) are investigated as a function of boron nitride content. The strong deviations of indentation stress-strain from elastic response indicate exceptional plasticity in $Si_3N_4-BN$. The absence of ring cracks or cone cracks on the surfaces is observed, indicating a high damage tolerance. Subsurface quasi- plastic deformation by shear stress is considerable and microdamage is widely distributed within the region below the contact. Shear faults associated with local microfailures play a precursor role in plasticity of this material. When boron nitride content increases, $Si_3N_4-BN$ becomes softer and more quasi-plastic.

  • CVD-SiC coating has been introduced as a protective layer in TRISO nuclear fuel particle of high temperature gas cooled reactor (HTGR) due to its excellent mechanical stability at high temperature. In order to prevent the failure of the TRISO particles, it is important to evaluate the fracture strength of the SiC coating layer. It is needed to develop a new simple characterization technique to evaluate the mechanical properties of the coating layer as a pre-irradiation step. In present work, direct strength measurement method with the specimen of hem i-spherical shell configuration was suggested. The indentation experiment on a hemisphere shell with a plate indenter was conducted. The fracture strength of the coating layer is related with the critical load for radial cracking of the shell. The finite element analysis was used to drive the semi-empirical equation for the strength measurement. The SiC hemispherical shells were successfully recovered from the section-grinding of TRISO coated particle and successive heat treatment in air. The strength of CVD-SiC coating layer was evaluated from the experimentally measured critical load during the indentation on SiC hemisphere shell. Weibull diagram of fracture strength was also constructed. This study suggested a new strength equation and experimental method to measure the fracture strength of CVD-SiC coating of TRISO coated fuel particles.

  • An irradiation hardening of Inconel 718 produced by selective laser melting (SLM) was studied based on the microstructural observation and mechanical behavior. Ion irradiation for emulating neutron irradiation has been proposed owing to advantages such as low radiation emission and short experimental periods. To prevent softening caused by the dissolution of γ' and γ" precipitates due to irradiation, only solution annealing (SA) was performed. SLM SA Inconel 718 specimen was ion irradiated to demonstrate the difference in microstructure and mechanical properties between the irradiated and non-irradiated specimens. After exposing specimens to Fe3+ ions irradiation up to 100 dpa (displacement per atom) at an ambient temperature, the hardness of irradiated specimens was measured by nano-indentation as a function of depth. The depth distribution profile of Fe3+ and dpa were calculated by the Monte Carlo SRIM (Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter)-2013 code under the assumption of the displacement threshold energy of 40 eV. A transmission electron microscope was utilized to observe the formation of irradiation defects such as dislocation loops. This study reveals that the Frank partial dislocation loops induce irradiation hardening of SLM SA Inconel 718 specimens.

  • In the nano/micro scale, material properties are dependent on the size-scale of a structure. However, conventional micro-scale tensile tests have limitations to obtain reliable values of nano-scale material properties owing to residual stress and elastic slippage in the gripping/aligning process. The indenter-driven nano-scale tensile test provides prominent advantages simple testing device, high-quality nano-scale metallic specimen with negligible residual stress. In this paper, two-types of specimens (a specimen with multi-testing parts and a specimen with a single-testing part) are discussed. Focused ion beam (FIB) is employed to fabricate a nano-scale specimen from a thin nickel film. Using the specimen with a single-testing part, we obtained a nano-scale stress-strain curve of electroplated nickel film.
