  • An advanced fiber sheet has been widely used for strengthening of the concrete structures due to its excellent properties such as high strength and light weight. Bond strength is very important in strengthening the concrete structures using an advanced fiber sheet. This research examines the bond behavior between fiber sheet and concrete, investigates the bond strength by the direct pull-out test and the tensile-shear test. To obtain the tensile-shear strength a double-face shear type bond test is conducted. The primary test variables are the types of concrete surface roughness (disk-grinding/chipping) and retrofitting methods (bonding/injection). Thirty specimens were tested to evaluate the bond strength. It is shown that the average bond strength between fiber sheet and concrete by the direct pull-out test and the tensile-shear test is $22.3{\sim}23.1kgf/cm^2$ $17.92{\sim}19.75kgf/cm^2$, respectively.

  • In recent years, fiber reinforced polymer plastic composites are readily available in the construction industry. Fiber reinforced polymer composite has many advantages such as high specific strength and high specific stiffness, high corrosion resistance, light-weight, magnetic transparency, etc. In this paper, we present the result of investigation pertaining to the flexural behavior of flange strengthened I-shape pultruded fiber reinforced polymer plastic (PFRP) member using carbon fiber sheet (CFRP sheet). Test variable is consisted of the number of layers of strengthening CFRP sheet from 0 to 3. From the experimental results, flexural strengthening effect of flange strengthened I-shape PFRP member using CFRP sheet is evaluated and it was found that 2 layers of strengthening CFRP sheet are appropriate considering efficiency and workability.

  • Recently new rehabilitation techniques have been proposed with advanced composite materials like carbon fiber, aramid, glass fiber sheet and so forth. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the mechanical characteristics of reinforced concrete columns confined with carbon fiber sheet and evaluate the degree of their strengthening effect. For the test, the specimen size of column is 15cm$\times$15cm$\times$90cm reinforced with 4 number of main bars of 10 mm diameter, tied bars of 6 mm diameter and slenderness ratio 20. Columns were wrapped with carbon fiber sheet along the column length. It is necessary to make some assumption regarding the confinement of carbon fiber sheet to apply to reinforced concrete columns under concentric loads. The strength gain effect of columns confined with carbon fiber sheet could be predicted using the proposed equation.

  • In this research, optical fiber sensors and shape memory alloys (SMA) were incorporated into sandwich panels for development of a smart honeycomb sandwich structure with damage detection and shape recovery functions. First, small-diameter fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors were embedded in the adhesive layer between a CFRP face-sheet and an aluminum honeycomb core. From the change in the reflection spectrum of the FBG sensors, the debonding between the face-sheet and the core and the deformation of the face-sheet due to impact loading could be well detected. Then, the authors developed the SMA honeycomb core and bonded CFRP face-sheets to the core. When an impact load was applied to the panel, the cell walls of the core were buckled and the face-sheet was bent. However, after the panel was heated over the reverse transformation finish temperature of the SMA, the core buckling disappeared and the deflection of the face-sheet was relieved. Hence the bending stiffness of the panel could be recovered.

  • Advanced composite materials such as carbon fiber, aramid, and glass fiber sheet, are widely used recently to strengthening existing reinforced concrete structures. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the mechanical characteristics of concrete compressive members confined with carbon fiber sheet and evaluate the efficiency of the strengthening under load actions. Uniaxal compression tests of concrete compressive members confined with carbon fiber sheet were experimentally used to develop a relationship between the axial stresses and the lateral stresses. The resulting axial and lateral strains were used to determine the confinement effect of concrete compressive members.

  • This paper summarizes the results of experimental studies concerning the flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete beams by the external bonding of the new reinforcement material, which is composite panel with an advanced fiber sheet bonded on light concrete precast panel. The structural behaviors of strengthened beams are compared with codes in terms of yield load and ultimate load, deflection, flexural stiffness, ductility. Thirty nine large-scale beams were tested experimentally to evaluate the strength enhancement provided by the composite panel. According to the results, it is shown that beams strengthened with composite panel are structurally efficient and that the strength of the strengthened beams are improved comparing with beams strengthened with fiber sheet.

  • Recently, a lot of interest has been shown in structural maintenance managements of civil infrastructures. Many researchers have been conducted on various maintenance techniques and repair materials. Among other fiber materials the carbon fiber materials are especially focused on maintenance management of Highway Bridges. Extensive work has been done on Carbon Fiber Sheet (CFS). Nevertheless, Carbon Fiber Strand Sheet (CFSS) is a newly developed material, on which limited work has been done until now. Therefore, in this study bonding the CFSS to RC slab specimen and fatigue resistance evaluation has been conducted. The results demonstrated an increase of 25.3 times more reinforcement of RC slab compared to non-reinforced RC slab. Moreover, compared to CFS-bonded RC slab, The CFSS-bonded RC slab showed 1.2 times greater reinforcement.

  • Preliminary study was perfomed to develop a biocompatible filter material using radiation energy. Electrosppined PLLA nano sheets were surface-modificated with hydrophilic groups(acrylic group) by using radiation. The physico-chemical and morphological characteristics of modified PLLA sheets were measured by ATR, SEM, contact angle, and hydrophilic (acryl group) introduction rate (TBO). As a result, there was no morphological(fiber structure) structure change due to radiation, and it was confirmed that an acrylic group was successfully introduced onto PLLA fiber sheet by radiation.

  • Thermally-induced deformation in SMC(Sheet Molding Compound) products is analyzed using three dimensional finite element method. Planar fiber orientation, which causes the anisotropic material properties, is calculated through the flow analysis during the compression stage of the mold. Also curing process is analyzed to predict temperature profile which has significant effects on warpage of SMC products. Through the developed procedure, effects of various process conditions such as charge location, mold temperature, fiber contents, and fiber orientations on deformation of final products are studied. and processing strategies are proposed to reduce the warpage and the shrinkage.

  • A fiber diffuser sheet based on poly (ethylene naphthalate) (PEN) and poly (methylpentene) (PMP) has shown potential for liquid crystal display backlight units, but these materials have an interfacial adhesion problem. To improve the interfacial adhesion between the fibers and matrix components, we have proposed the use of amorphous poly (cyclohexane-1,4-dimethylene terephthalate) (Tritan) instead of PEN. Furthermore, the fabrication processes have been optimized and simplified to improve the optical and mechanical properties of the sheet. As a result, the most effective fiber content for achieving the best haze characteristics of a sample consisting of Tritan and PMP has been identified.
