  • The strength data on AlBC3 and HBsC1 which are used for materials of marine propeller blade are insufficient as used of material limited and even rules of KR(Korean Register of Shipping) describe only a point of view that the chemical composition and men values of mechanical proper-ties have to be certain level. In this study distribution characteristics as well as mean values of mechanical properties are investigated through the tensile test and the characteristics of fatigue strength are investigated through the fatigue test.

  • Recently, several advanced flow visualization techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) including stereo PIV, holographic PIV, and dynamic PIV have been developed. These advanced techniques have strong potential as the experimental technology which can be used for verifying numerical simulation. In addition, there would be indispensable in solving complicated thermo-fluid flow problems not only in the industrial fields such as automotive, space, electronics, aero- and hydro-dynamics, steel, and information engineering, but also in the basic research fields of medical science, bio-medical engineering, environmental and energy engineering etc. Especially, NT Nano Technology) and BT (Bio Technology) strongly demand these advanced measurement techniques, because it is difficult for conventional methods to observe most complicated nano- and bio-fluidic phenomena. In this paper, the basic principle of these advanced visualization techniques and their practical applications which cannot be resolved by conventional methods, such as flow in automotive HVAC system, ship and propeller wake, three-dimensional flow measurement in micro-conduits, and flow around a circulating cylinder will be introduced.

  • Modern advanced-turboprop propellers are required to have high structural strength to cope with the thrust requirement at high speed. The high stiffness and strength carbon/epoxy composite material is used for the major structure and skin-spar-foam sandwich structural type is adopted for advantage in terms of the blade weight. As a design procedure for the present study, the structural design load is estimated through investigation on aerodynamic load and then flanges of spars from major bending loads and the skin from shear loads are sized using the netting rule and Rule of Mixture. In order to investigate the structural safety and stability, stress analysis is performed by finite element analysis code MSC. NASTRAN. It is found that current methodology of composite structure design is a valid method through the static structural test of prototype blade.

  • Waterjet propulsion generally refers to propulsion of ships by internally mounted pumps with proper ducting. This arrangement of the actuator component of the system leads to the fundamental differences with respects to screw propeller system. In this paper, the basic hydrodynamic characteristics of waterjet propulsion was outlined to clarify the application consideration and proposal for carrying out model self-propulsion tests with waterjet propelled models was presented. The results of model self-propulsion tests carried out in the Hyundai Maritime Research Institute towing tank with catamaran ship were presented.

  • Recently, electric propulsion systems are been increasingly used in large cruise ships and merchant vessels. When abnormal electrical conditions occur in the motor of an electric propulsion ship, they can cause serious damage to the motor and propeller shaft. Research on abnormal conditions of propulsion motors used in electric propulsion vessels and electric ships difficult to find. In this study, a mathematical model of the electric propulsion system is proposed to analyze transient phenomena that occur in the case of electric propulsion motor or propeller shaft malfunction. A synchronous motor was used in the MATLAB computer simulation of this study. In the event of electrical malfunction of the electric propulsion motor at rated operation, over current occurs in the condition of 1 phase ground, over torque occurs at 3 and 2 phases ground and over current and torque occur when exciting power fails at rated operation.

  • Because there exist a region in the rotational speed and torque map that the a particular combination of a motor and an ESC (Electronic Speed Control) can maintain its peak efficiency, identifying this region is important for designing an efficient system. Firstly the accuracy of the measurement device is verified using the published propeller measurement data. And then, the combined motor-ESC efficiencies of an individual propeller are measured at a wide range of rotational speeds. With measurements obtained from a large number of different propellers, efficiency contours are obtained. It is shown that there exist a significant difference between the measured combined efficiency and the motor efficiency computed using a simple model. In addition, with the same motor, the combined efficiency can have a meaningful variation depending on the model of the ESC. The efficiency contours derived from this study will be useful for the design and optimization of electric propulsion systems of an aircraft where propulsion efficiency is critical.

  • With the results of calculation for natural frequencies the reponses of forced coupled vibration of propulsion shafting system were investigated by the modal analysis method. For the forced vibration response analysis, the axial exciting forces, the axial damper/detuner, propeller exciting forces and damping coefficients were extensively considered. As the conclusion of this study, some items are cleared as follows.-The torsional vibration amplitudes are not influenced by the radial excitation forces of the crank shaft. -The axial vibration amplitudes are influenced by the tangential exciting forces as well as the radial exciting forces of the crank shaft. The increase of the amplitudes is observed in the speed range at the neighbourhood of any torsional critical speed. 1The closer the torsional and axial critical speed. the larger coupling effect becomes. -The axial exciting force of propeller is relatively strong comparing with axial exciting forces of cylinder gas pressure and oscillating inertia of reciprocating mechanism. Therefore, the following conclusions are obtained. -Torsional vibration calculation with the classical one dimensional model is still valid. -The influence of torsional excitation at each crank upon the axial vibration is improtant. especially in the neighbourhood of a torsional critical speed. That means that the calculation of axial vibration with the classical one dimensional model is inaccurate in most of cases.

  • Controllable pitch propeller(CPP) is usually adopted for easy and effective engine controls of a ship in a port. Unfortunately the torsional vibration may occur by a certain variation of engine torque and the major resonance peak may exist within the maximum continuous rating(MCR) In these cases an additional stress concentration on the oil passages such as longitudinal slots notches and circular holes of an oil distributor shaft(ODS) occurs by the torsional vibration of the CPP shaft. In this paper an analysis for the fatigue limit of an ODS system of the 5S70MC engine in a crude oil carrier is done by applying FEM and empirical formulas. Furthermore the additional stress on the ODS is investigated by analyzing the torsional vibration of the shaft system and a control method in which a tuning damper is adopted is introduced in the case of the additional stress exceeds the fatigue limit. The validity of analysis method is verified by comparing the results acquired by an actual measurement of the vibratory torque for the above ODS
