  • Witches' broom symptoms were firstly found on tubers of Solanum tuberosum cv, Deijima, showing dense growth of spindly sprouts in Cheju province, Korea. Plantlets from the diseased plants also produced the typical witches' broom symptoms, having densely-growing small leaves when they became adult plants. At the later stages the diseased leaves were blightened. Presence of phytoplasma in plant tissues was confirmed by DAPI-staining fluorescence microscopy and electron microscopy, exhibiting its localization in sieve tubes of stem, petiole, and midrib. This is the first report of potato witches' broom in Korea.

  • Benign esophagobronchial fistula without esophageal atresia is a relatively rare disease. Fistula between the esophagus and bronchi may be congenital, traumatic, inflammatory or neoplastic. In our country, several case reports have been presented and the causes were either congenital, spontaneous, or inflammatory, such as, tuberculosis and diverticulum of esophagus. A 36 year old man experienced cough secondary to swallowing a Korean soup, frequent URIs and dyspnea. Esophagobronchial fistula was diagnosis by the esophagogram. Treatment was by resection with mid-lobectomy of the Rt. lung. After surgery, the patient`s general condition was stable.

  • Dry mouth is common among older adults and significantly affects the oral health-related quality of life. It is a significant risk factor for dental caries, particularly root caries, in older adults due to concurrent periodontal disease and age-related comorbidities. Clinicians managing patients with dry mouth must be aware of preventive measures against dental caries. This clinical review aims to update our knowledge on the use of fluoride for caries prevention in order to establish better strategies for the management of dry mouth in older adults.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore Korean mothers' experiences of caregiving for their adult children with schizophrenia. Method: A iterative descriptive qualitative research design was used to understand and explain the caregiving experience from the perspective of mothers. The data were collected by individual in-depth interviews and one focus group interview from 11 mothers. The ages of the participants ranged from 50 to 60 years old and the ages of their sick children ranged from late 20s to early 40s, Results: Three major themes were identified from qualitative thematic analysis: (a) 'emotional debris from the disease,' (b) 'the disease that makes mothers dumb' (c) 'space of rational reason,' Conclusions: This study would provide health care professionals insights in establishing intervention for mothers by deeply understanding the process of recognition and acceptance of their children with schizophrenia.

  • Fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva is a very rare genetic disorder, but is possible to diagnose with mass on neck or scalp in early neonate or child and accompanying characteristic congenital malformation of great toe. But because inappropriate treatment and complications from misdiagnosis may aggravate the progress of the disease, so the disorder require careful inspection for accurate diagnosis. We describe a case that was misdiagnosed properly and treated inappropriately and the natural history of the disease in adult.

  • Antisynthetase syndrome has been recognized as an important cause of autoimmune inflammatory myopathy in a subset of patients with polymyositis and dermatomyositis. It is associated with serum antibody to aminoacyl-transfer RNA synthetases and is characterized by a constellation of manifestations, including fever, myositis, interstitial lung disease, mechanic's hand-like cutaneous involvement, Raynaud phenomenon, and polyarthritis. Lung disease is the presenting feature in 50% of the cases. We report a case of a 60-year-old female with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which later proved to be an unexpected and initial manifestation of anti-Jo-1 antibody-positive antisynthetase syndrome. The present case showed resolution of ARDS after treatment with high-dose corticosteroids. Given that steroids are not greatly beneficial in the treatment of ARDS, it is likely that the improvement of the respiratory symptoms in this patient also resulted from the prompt suppression of the inflammatory systemic response by corticosteroids.

Methods : We surveyed the western and oriental medical books from to recent published books that have articles on Aphasia. Results and Conclusion : The concept of phonation organ in neiching is same as that of modern physiology. Sul-um is relative with verbal disturbance of central nervous disease and Hu-um is relative with verbal disturbance of peripheral nervous disease in modern medicine. The Aphasia of Children was classified two concept which is innate and acquirement Aphasia according to production cause. The Aphasia of children has the most close relation with the kidney and heart in the five zang-organ.

  • 1. In adult ICR-SLC mice, significant increase in the occurrence of the Tyzzer's disease was noted when the reticuloendothelial system was blockaded with the carbon particles. The most suitable bloakading time was 2 hours before inoculating Tyzzer's organisms, the route was intraperitoneal and the dose was 3mg/body. 2. Survival rate of the experimental group ICR-SLC suckling mice receiving BCG ($3{\times}10^8$) 6 days prior to intraperitoneal inoculation of Tyzzer's organisms was 80 percent, but the control group was 17%. 3. In comparing the survival rate of the nude/nude mice with the nude/+ mice, the former congenitally thymus deficient mice are 11 percent, but the latter are 67 percent.
