  • Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is characterized by the triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction. PRS does not have a single pathogenesis, but rather is associated with multiple syndromes. This report presents the case of a 35-year-old woman with PRS and scoliosis. Among the syndromes related to PRS, cerebro-costo-mandibular syndrome (CCMS), which is characterized by posterior rib gap defects and vertebral anomalies, was suspected in this patient. However, no posterior rib gap defect was detected on radiological examinations. Although over 80 cases of CCMS have been reported to date, few cases of PRS with scoliosis alone have been reported. Therefore, this report demonstrated the clinical, radiological, and cephalometric characteristics of an adult patient with PRS and scoliosis, but without rib anomalies.

  • Ganglion cysts are most common on the dorsum of the hand or wrist, but they can occur in any part of the body. There have been few papers reporting ganglion cysts originating from the sternoclavicular joint, with most of these cases developing in children. A 76-year-old woman was referred to our department because of a painless mass over the right sternoclavicular joint. The mass was excised along with the portion of the sternoclavicular joint capsule surrounding the stalk. Histopathologic examination showed the cyst wall to be composed of compressed collagen fibers without evidence of an epithelial or synovial lining, which was consistent with ganglion cyst. To our knowledge, this is the first report of such a cyst in an adult. We consider this to be a useful report for surgeons that treat mass lesions occurring in almost any part of the body surface.

  • The balance of facial sop tissue is important factor for the treatment of maxillofacial deformity patients. There are many cephalometric analysis of facial bone but a few soft tissue analysis of face for the orthognathic surgery, especially in the oriental people. This study aimed at examining the mean value of the soft tissue measurement of 120 Korean adult women with the linear and angular measurement and comparing with Caucasian. The results ere as follows. 1. In the frontal linear measurement, Korean women have larger interocular distant and width of nose, but the width of mouth appeared less than Caucasian. 2. In the frontal angular measurement, Korean women have larger inclination of the eye than Caucasian. 3. In the lateral linear measurement, Korean women have more prominent upper and lower lip position than Caucasian and have longer upper facial height comparing with lower facial height than Caucasian. 4. In the lateral angular measurement, Korean women have more convex facial profile and less nasolabial and geniolabial angle. 5. In the lateral facial ratio, Korean women have larger proportion in the lower department below the stomion.

  • Shone complex is a rare congenital disorder that involves 4 obstructive lesions of the left heart, as follows: parachute mitral valve, supravalvular mitral ring, subaortic stenosis, and coarctation of the aorta. Incomplete forms with 2 or 3 of these lesions in adult patients have been rarely reported in the literature, meaning that insufficient general data exist concerning the surgical strategy and clinical follow-up. Herein, we report the case of a 31-year-old woman with a diagnosis of incomplete form of Shone complex with parachute mitral valve and coarctation of the aorta who underwent successful single-stage surgical repair.

  • Acrolein is highly toxic and may be formed from carbohydrates, vegetable oils, animal fats and amino acids during heating of food. In the present study, we investigated adults' intake level of cooked meat using high temperature cooking method such as pan frying or grilling directly over an open flame and indirect fire using pan. The 925 adults (438 men and 487 women) participated in this nationwide survey. According to the result of frequency intake of cooked meat at high temperature, the most frequently consumed cooked meat at high temperature was fried chicken, followed by indirect cooking-samgeybsal and directly grilled fish and mackerel pike among twenty five kinds of cooked meats and foods, which were eaten more than three times per month. The woman consumed direct grilled fish and mackerel pike more than three times per month, while the man consumed samgeybsal, pork cutlet, and fried chicken once per week. The order of total intake amount of cooked meat per adult for a year is 10.3 kg of fried chicken (man 13.1 kg, woman 8.04 kg), 6.7 kg of samgeybsal (man 9.4 kg, woman 4.7 kg) and 5.1 kg of jeyukbockeum (man 7.0 kg, woman 3.6 kg). The results of present study suggest that adult must realize the risk of consuming cooked meat at high temperature and the need for education for proper dietary habit to prevent geriatric diseases.

  • The Ca and P balance studies were carried out with two different diets varying Ca levels : the current Korean RDA level(normal Ca diet) and the high level (High Ca diet) which was determined by adding 2SD to mean Ca intake of all subjects. The subjects were sever healthy adult woman, aged from 25 to 32 years old. The metabolic studies were conducted for two weeks with a days recess in between : during the fist week with normal Ca diet and during the second week with high Ca diet. The composition of nutrients excepting Ca of both diets was similar to subjects usual intake. The result were summarized as follows: Mean daily Ca intake was 728.8mg from norma Ca diet and 945.5mg from high Ca diet. Fecal excretion of Ca increased significantly(p<0.05) on high Ca diet, but urinary excretion of Ca did not show any differences between the two diet periods. There were also no significant differences in Ca retention between the two diet periods but it tended to be greater during high Ca diet period: 112.1mg/day during normal Ca diet period vs 208.2mg/day during high Ca diet period. Mean apparent Ca absorption was 41.2% on normal Ca diet and 42.1% on high Ca diet, indicating it was not affected by high Ca intake level used in this study. On the contrary, P retention was significantly increased up to 109.4mg/day with high Ca diet as compared to- 41mg/day with normal Ca diet. There were no significant differences in fecal and urinary excretion of P but those to be lower during high Ca diet period. The above results showed that higher Ca intake more than current RDA(700mg/day), in the level of 945.5mg/day, could increase Ca retention through Ca absorption comparable to the rate appeared on RDA level intake. P retention was also improved by high Ca intake. Therefore, higher Ca intake than the current RDA level seemed to produce favorable effects on bone health in adult women. However, the current RDA level seemed to be relatively appropriate, considering the results that all the subjects but one maintained positive Ca balance with normal Ca diet. • Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is a malignancy of mature T-cells caused by the human T-cell lymphotrophic virus type I (HTLV-D. HTLV-I is endemic in some areas in Japan, the Caribbean basin, and Africa but has low prevalence in South Korea. Patients with ATLL are susceptible to opportunistic infections such as cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, but CMV infection in chronic ATLL is uncommon. Reported herein is a case involving a 44-year-old woman with chronic ATLL who presented the symptoms of fever and diarrhea. She was suspected to have acute-type ATLL but was later diagnosed with CMV colitis.
