  • The purpose of this study is to establish the concept of the blind zone of social services and analyzing the conditions by children, the elderly, the disabled, and the poor. This study used the raw data of demand/supply of social service and sample size is 4,038. Results of the study were as follows. First, in terms of the coverage, the biggest blind zones of social service are the employment support and cultural service. These results were similar for all households. But, it is noteworthy that the size and proportion of blind zones of housing support services for children, counseling services for elderly are relatively big. Second, in terms of adequacy, the most serious blind zones of social service are health and the employment support service. Especially, the elderly, the disabled, and the poor are not the most adequate adult care services and children are community service. Based on such findings, this study suggests expansion of employment support services and health care, monitoring for the services analyzed to be over-supply, and intensive involvement of private sectors about the services provided by the government of a large blind zone.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the infiluence of positive and negative word-of-mouth informations on visiting intention of hairshop customers. Data were collected from 342 adult females and analyzed by using frequencies, factor analysis and regression utilizing SPSS/PC+. The results showed that positive word-of-mouth informations such as shop employees' skill/attitudes, physical benefit, comfortable facilities, time saving/consistent service, kindness and rational price had influence on the visiting intention of hairshop customers. The negative word-of-mouth informations that consumers had experienced using hairshop were categorized as untrustworthy face-to-face customer management, non-customer service oriented mind, and unskilled employees/inefficient hairshop environment. The negative word-of-mouth informations had no effect on the visiting intention.

  • The study was attempted to scrutinize the normal osmotic fragility of erythrocytes in domestic poultry such as chicken, quail and duck making a comparison with that in domestic mammalia such as dog and pig. Osmotic fragility of erythrocytes was determined on blood samples from 10 healthy adult animal in each species. Optical initial hemolysis of erytyrocytes occurred at $0.395{\pm}0.03%$ Nacl for chicken, $0.410{\pm}0.03%$ for duck, $0.440{\pm}0.02%$ for quail, $0.470{\pm}0.05%$ for dog and $0.560{\pm}0.03%$ for pig. Optical complete hemolysis of erytyrocytes occurred at $0.270{\pm}0.02%$ Nacl for chicken, $305{\pm0}.03%$ for duck, $0.360{\pm}0.02%$ for quail, $0.370{\pm}0.03%$ for dog and $0.455{\pm}0.03%$ for p. In other words, erythrocytes of poultry have stronger resistance to osmotic Iysis than that of mammalia, showing the strongest resistance In chicken among the tested poultry.

  • Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) occurred in the breeder duck farms in Jeonbuk of in Korea on January to February 2014. Clinically, the most ducks showed various signs from depression, dropped egg production and feed consumption to even, death. The most commonly gross changes were hepatomegaly, splenomegaly, petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhage on the liver surface, a white stripe on the cardiac muscle, multifocal hemorrhagic foci in pancreas, and severely hemorrhagic embryos. The most significant signs of H5N8 virus was supposed to specific on ducks. The viral antigen was mainly detected in the endothelium of blood vessels of various organs and tissues, peripheral nerves, and neuronal cells. Based on the above results, we identified that HPAI H5N8 induced systemic infection in the adult breeder ducks.

  • Objectives : This study was conducted to examine the relationships between Korean adult's daily hours of sleep, depression, and suicidal thoughts using data from the 7th National Health and Nutrition Survey. Methods : This study utilized a depression screening tool, the 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), for the 6,355 participants of the health and mental health survey. T-tests, cross analysis, correlation analysis, and logistic regression analysis were used. Results : The results showed that sufficient hours of sleep decreased depression. The depression score for females (3.19) was significantly higher than for males (2.10; p<.001). The participants in the depression group slept less than 7 hours per day (p<.01). Conclusions : The study results showed a significant correlation between sleep duration and depression when health-related factors and social factors influencing sleep were controlled. The results also indicated that this correlation may vary based on gender. This study implies that further studies are necessary to identify the causal relationship between sleep duration and depression.

Twenty-three different variables were derived from 17 previous studies. These were: population, urbanization rate, women employed, enrollment in tertiary education, gross domestic product, value added by service, total number of mobile cellular telephone subscribers, number of internet users, total Asian highway, inward foreign direct investment, total service imports, inflation rate, international tourist arrivals, energy use by industry, growth rates of the food consumer price index, access to urban sanitation, per capita total expenditure on health, male life expectancy at birth, adult literacy rate, contributing women family workers, passenger car, and country risk assessment. The selected variables were collected as secondary data from the UN, Asian Development Bank, International Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and Michigan State University.

  • The purposes of this study were to quantify and compare the kind and amount of solid waste generated in two school foodservice operations located in urban and rural areas. A waste stream analysis was conducted to quantify and characterize the kind of waste in the production and service parts of each operation. The SPSS 10.0 for window was used for data analysis. Non-parametric test (Mann-Whitney) was adopted to determine if significant differences exist in amounts of waste generated in the urban school and the rural school. An average of 415 meals, including 43 adult meals, were served daily in the urban school, while an average of 177 meals, including 24 adult meals, were served daily in the rural school. Food waste generated in the production part in the urban school composed approximately 87% and 45%, while that in the rural school composed 71% and 28% by weight and volume, respectively. Waste per meal was not significantly different between the urban school and the rural school in the production part except the cardboard waste. The total waste per meal at lunch was 154g or 465m1 in the urban school and 51g or 334m1 in the rural school. Students in the urban school discarded significantly more food waste and milk than students in the rural school did. The research results suggest that school foodservice dietitians should evaluate the acceptability of menu items based on food waste per meal, and assess the feasibility of implementing a plan for recycling packaging waste and composting organic waste.

  • Background : Previous studies have reported that enhanced continuity of care prevented a sudden worsening in progress among chronic disease patients, and as a result was favorable for efficient spending of health care funds. This study aims to estimate the continuity of care of Korean with diabetes and to identify factors affecting the continuity of care. Methods : This study used the Korean National Health Insurance Claims Database which includes E11 (ICD-10) as a primary or secondary disease as of 2006. Study population is 1,160,725 type 2 diabetics (20-84 years). Continuity of Care Index (COC), Modified, Modified Continuity Index (MMCI), and Most Frequent Provider Continuity (MFPC) were used as indexes of continuity of care. Results : The continuity of care in the study population was $0.94{\pm}0.10$ as calculated by MMCI, $0.91{\pm}0.16$ as calculated by MFPC and $0.86{\pm}0.23$ as calculated by COC. The lower continuity of care was shown in the patients who were female, 65 and over years old, Medical Aid recipients, 13 times or more visitors, hospital users as main attending medical institution, patients experienced hospitalizations or comorbidities. Conclusion : The continuity of care for adult patients with type 2 diabetes was high in Korea, and showed variation according to patients' characteristics. This result provides empirical evidence for policymakers to develop or strengthen programs for managing patients showing low continuity of care.
