Effect of Preparation Method for Pd/C Catalysts on Pd Characterization and their Catalytic Activity (Pd/C 촉매 제조 방법에 따른 Pd 금속의 특성 및 촉매 활성)

  • Pd/C catalysts were prepared by various preparation methods such as ion exchange, impregnation and polyol method and also characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption isothermal, XRD, FE-TEM and CO-chemisorption. The activities of these catalysts were tested in the hydrogenation of cyclohexene to cyclohexane. Catalytic activities of Pd/C catalysts were found to be effected by the chosen preparation methods. Pd dispersions of each Pd/C catalysts prepared by ion exchange, impregnation and polyol method were 17.55, 13.82% and 1.35%, respectively, confirmed by CO-chemisorption analysis. These were also in good agreement with the FE-TEM results. The Pd/C catalyst prepared by ion exchange method exhibits good performance with the cyclohexene conversion rate of 71% for 15 min. These results indicate that Pd/C catalyst having higher dispersion and lower particle size is in favor of hydrogenation cyclohexene and also Pd dispersion increases with the increment of catalytic activity.

Effect of Pore Structure of Activated Carbon Fiber on Mechanical Properties (활성탄소섬유의 기공구조가 기계적 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study, PAN (polyacrylonitrile) based activated carbon fibers were prepared by water vapor activation method which is a physical activation method. Activation was performed with temperature and time as parameters. When the activation temperature reached 700, 750 and $800^{\circ}C$, the activation was carried out under the condition of a water vapor flow rate of 200 ml/min. In order to analyze the pore structure of activated carbon fibers, the specific surface area ($S_{BET}$) was measured by the adsorption/desorption isotherm of nitrogen gas and AFM analysis was performed for the surface analysis. Tensile tests were also conducted to investigate the effect of the pore structure on mechanical properties of fibers. As a result, the $S_{BET}$ of fibers after the activation showed a value of $448{\sim}902m^2/g$, the tensile strength decreased 58.16~84.92% and the tensile modulus decreased to 69.81~83.89%.

Organobentonite as a dual sorbent for Chlombenzene and Lead (클로로벤젠과 납의 동시 제거를 위한 흡착제로서의 유기 벤토나이트에 관한 연구)

  • The use of clay has been the favored method of reducing or eliminating hazardous contaminants in the leachate from landfills. But, neither natural clays nor organoclays modified with surfactants are able to effectively sorb both heavy metals and organic contaminants. Therefore, the objective of this study is to determine the optimal amount of surfactant added on the clay mineral to effectively remove both of them. For this purpose, Na-Bentonite as the natural clay, and hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) as the cationic surfactant were used, Chlorobenzene and lead ($Pb^{2-}$) were selected as representative contaminants. Experimental result showed that chlorobenzene sorption increased with increasing HDTMA to bentonite, ratios. On the contrary, the removal rate of lead decreased as the amount of HDTMA increased. The removal of chlorobenzene was influenced by the amount of HDTMA added to the bentonites rather than initial concentration of chlorobenzene, but the removal of lead was much more influenced by the initial concentration of lead. The adsorption of lead was not affected by chlorobenzene, and vice versa. The competitive sorption between the heavy metal and the organic contaminant was not present.

  • The Electron/Hole Pair is generated when the activation energy produced by ultraviolet ray illuminates to the semiconductor and OH- ion produced by water photocleavage reacts with positive Hole. As a results, OH radical acting as strong oxidant is generated and then Photocatalytic oxidation reaction occurs. The photocatalytic oxidation can oxidate the non-degradable and hazardous organic substances such as pesticides and aromatic materials easier, safer and shorter than conventional water treatment process. So in this study, many factors influencing the oxidation of chlorophenols, such as inorganic electrolytes addition, change of oxygen and nitrogen atmosphere, temperature, pH, oxygen concentration, chlorophenol concentration, were throughly examined. According to the experiments observations, it is founded that the rate of chlorophenol oxidation follows a first-order reaction and the modified Langmuir-Hinshelwood relationship. And the photocatalytic oxidation occurs only when activation energy acting as Electron/Hole generation, oxygen acting as electron acceptor to prevent Electron/Hole recombination, $TiO_2$ powder acting as photocatalyst are present. The effects of variation of dissolved oxygen concentration, temperature and inorganic electrolytes concentration on 2-chlorophenol oxidation are negligible. And the lower the organic concentration, the higher the oxidation efficiency becomes. Therefore, the photocatalytic oxidation is much effective to oxidation of hazardous substances at very low concentration. The oxidation is effective in the range of 0.1 g/L-10 g/L of $TiO_2$. Finally when the ultra-violet ray is illuminated to $TiO_2$, the surface characteristics of $TiO_2$ change and Adsorption/Desorption reaction on $TiO_2$ surface occurs.

A Study on Ca and P Balance in Koran Adult Women (한국 성인 여자의 칼슘과 인 평형에 관한 연구)

  • The Ca and P balance studies were carried out with two different diets varying Ca levels : the current Korean RDA level(normal Ca diet) and the high level (High Ca diet) which was determined by adding 2SD to mean Ca intake of all subjects. The subjects were sever healthy adult woman, aged from 25 to 32 years old. The metabolic studies were conducted for two weeks with a days recess in between : during the fist week with normal Ca diet and during the second week with high Ca diet. The composition of nutrients excepting Ca of both diets was similar to subjects usual intake. The result were summarized as follows: Mean daily Ca intake was 728.8mg from norma Ca diet and 945.5mg from high Ca diet. Fecal excretion of Ca increased significantly(p<0.05) on high Ca diet, but urinary excretion of Ca did not show any differences between the two diet periods. There were also no significant differences in Ca retention between the two diet periods but it tended to be greater during high Ca diet period: 112.1mg/day during normal Ca diet period vs 208.2mg/day during high Ca diet period. Mean apparent Ca absorption was 41.2% on normal Ca diet and 42.1% on high Ca diet, indicating it was not affected by high Ca intake level used in this study. On the contrary, P retention was significantly increased up to 109.4mg/day with high Ca diet as compared to- 41mg/day with normal Ca diet. There were no significant differences in fecal and urinary excretion of P but those to be lower during high Ca diet period. The above results showed that higher Ca intake more than current RDA(700mg/day), in the level of 945.5mg/day, could increase Ca retention through Ca absorption comparable to the rate appeared on RDA level intake. P retention was also improved by high Ca intake. Therefore, higher Ca intake than the current RDA level seemed to produce favorable effects on bone health in adult women. However, the current RDA level seemed to be relatively appropriate, considering the results that all the subjects but one maintained positive Ca balance with normal Ca diet.   • The adsorptive stripping voltammetry of corticosterone was studied in $1.0{\times}10^{-2}M$ sodium hydroxide as supporting electrolyte. The analytical conditions were as follow : 360 sec. for deposition time, -8.0 volts deposition potential, medium size mercury drop, and 20mV/sec scan rate. Calibration curve has shown a linearlity in the range of $5.0{\times}10^{-9}M$ to $8.0{\times}10^{-7}M$ and the detection limits have been $9.5{\times}10^{-10}M$ for corticoterones. This method has shown such a high sensitivity even in dilute solution that has been useful for analyzing sex hormones in medical supplies without interference of additives.

  • To develop an intravenous delivery system of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) for the cancer therapy, poly(L-lactic acid) nanoparticles were prepared and characterized. Emulsification-solvent evaporation method was chosen to prepare submicron sized nanoparticles. Spherical nanoparticles less than 200 nm in diameter with narrow size distribution were prepared, and the entrapment efficiency of drug was more than 95%. The endothermic peak at $183^{\circ}C$ and X-ray crystallographic peak of ATRA appeared in the nanoparticle system, suggesting the inhibition of crystallization of ATRA by polymer adsorption during the precipitation process. ATRA was released at $37^{\circ}C$ for 60 days and the release rate was dependent on the concentration of drug incorporated in the nanoparticles. While ATRA was unstable in the light, it was very stable at $4^{\circ}C$. These results suggest the usefulness of PLA nanoparticles as a sustained and prolonged release carrier for ATRA.

  • Aronia (black chokeberry), a species of berries is source to a very large number of bioactive compounds like polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and tannins in comparison to any other species. Owing to its antioxidant, anti-carcinogenic, anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties. Fermentation- a bioconversion process exploiting the biological metabolic reaction of micro-organisms, has several benefits like improving the efficacy and safety of physiologically active substances, generation of new functional material, improving the adsorption rate and many others. Antigens like pathogens, food, pollen etc., generate a protective immune response in body tissues, and the process be referred to as inflammation. However, this when excessive results in a condition referred to as refractory inflammatory disease, whose incidence is increasing in the recent times, especially amongst children. The current study intended to assess the anti-oxidant activity, presence of polyphenols and anti-inflammatory efficacy of Aronia extract fermented by Lactic acid bacteria isolated from fermented sea foods. Aronia fruits collected from Sunchang, Chonbuk were lyophilized for fermentation. So as to maximise the efficacy of the fermented Aronia extract, the quantitative effects of lactic acid bacteria species, composition of extraction solution, influence of temperature and time on antioxidant activity and total polyphenol contents were investigated using an experimental design. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated on NO and cytokine ($TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6) production in LPS activated Raw 264.7 cells. Results indicated that antioxidant effect and total polyphenol contents were best improved in extract of Aronia fermented by P. pentosaceus. In addition, NO and cytokine ($TNF-{\alpha}$, IL-6) levels were decreased significantly after fermentation. Thus, it was found that the anti-inflammatory activity of Aronia greatly increased after fermentation process using P. pentosaceus.

  • Flat membrane with $0.4{\mu}m$ pore size was prepared with PVdF (polyvinylidene fluoride) nanofiber, which has the advantages such as excellent strength, chemical resistance, nontoxic, non-combustibility. After that, spiral wound module was manufactured with it including a woven paper. Effect of pH was studied by comparing permeate fluxes and rejection rates of the spiral wound module using simulation solution including kaolin and humic acid. The recovery rate and filtration resistance were calculated after water back-washing at the end of filtration experiment. In addition, after the water filtrated by the spiral wound module was passed through a column filled with GAC (granular activated carbon), adsorption effect of GAC was investigated by measuring the turbidity and $UV_{254}$ absorbance.

  • Pseudomonas syringae pv. tabaci produces tabtoxin and causes wildfire disease on tabacco and bean plants. In this study, bacteriophage of P. syringae pv. tabaci were isolated from sewage by top agar overlay method, and physiological and genetical characteristics of the phage were investigated. Plaques of isolated phage were turbid and ranged in size from 1 to 2 mm. The stability range of pH was between 6.0 and 9.0, and stability of temperature was up to 30${\circ}C$ and inactivated at 70${\circ}C$. The adsorption rate of phage was about 85% for 30min. The latent period and mean burst size as dertermined in one step growth experiments were 3 hrs and 200 PFU/bacterium, respectively. Genomic material of isolated phage was dsDNA of which size was about 30kb.
