  • In this study, mercury vapor adsorption behaviors for some kinds of porous materials having various pore structures were investigated. The specific surface area and pore structures were studied by BET and D-R plot methods from $N_2$/77 K adsorption isotherms. It was found that the micropore materials (activated carbons, ACs) showed the highest mercury adsorption capacity. In a comparative study of mesoporous materials (SBA-15 and MCM-41), the adsorption capacity of the SBA-15 was higher than that of MCM-41. From the pore structure analysis, it was found that SBA-15 has a higher micropore fraction compared to MCM-41. This result indicates that the mercury vapor adsorptions can be determined by two factors. The first factor is the specific surface area of the adsorbent, and the second is the micropore fraction when the specific surface areas of the adsorbent are similar.

  • For the adsorption of ammonia, activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were subjected to sulfuric acid treatment in order to modify the surface functional groups. The surface acid and base value of ACFs were measured using titration and FT-IR spectrometry. SEM was used to investigate the surface morphology. Acid treatments by $H_3PO_4$, $H_2SO_4$, and $HNO_3$ were performed to increase the adsorption capacity of $NH_3$. As a result, Cellulose-based ACF has high adsorption capacity for ammonia. The ammonia removal efficiency of ACF was the maximum which was treated by 15 wt% sulfuric acid at $100^{\circ}C$ for 60 min. The average pore diameter little increased from $19{\AA}$ to $20.8{\AA}$ and the specific surface area of ACF considerably decreased and acid values increased by 15 wt% sulfuric acid treatment. Ammonia reacted with sulfonyl radicals. After adsorption of ammonia, white material was grown on the surface of ACF through the adsorption of ammonia and it was determined to ammonium sulfate.

  • In this study, natural substance and mineral materials was used for architectural interior wallpaper. Because natural substance and minerals are environment-friendly material with moisture adsorption and desorption properties. Natural substance and mineral materials was evaluated in moisture adsorption and desorption properties. Also, in the diatomite, the pores were observed on SEM photographs. Thus, it is supposed that moisture adsorption and desorption properties were influenced by the microstructure of the pore. The wallpaper according to the ratio of the mixture was analyzed for physical properties and moisture adsorption & desorption properties. As a result, we developed a wallpaper having excellent hygrothermal performance.

  • Highly ordered Li dispersed nickel oxide nanotubes were prepared with anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template for hydrogen storage. Electron microscope results showed that uniform length and diameter of nickel oxide nanotubes were obtained. The wall thickness and outer diameter of nickel oxide nanotubes are about 40 - 50 nm and 200 - 400 nm, respectively. It was observed that the diameter of nickel oxide nanotubes is bigger than the pore diameter of AAO template. Li dispersed nickel oxide were consisted of nanoflakes and had structures of nanotubes and nanorods. For increasing the hydrogen adsorption and desorption capacity, the Li dispersed nickel oxide nanotubes were fluorinated. The fluorinated Li dispersed nickel oxide nanotubes showed 1.65 wt% of the hydrogen adsorption capacities at 77 K under 47 atm.

  • This study was carried out to know the difference of vapor transmission on the thickness of Paulownia wood(Paulownia tomentosa). The behavior of moisture transmission of wood thickness direction is generally estimated by vapor permeability and vapor transmission resistance. In general, Paulownia wood is known to use of inside material for furniture making, because of the excellent ability of vapor adsorption and/or desorption. Quarter sawing Paulownia wood material is prepared and the thickness is 6.0mm, 7.0mm, 8.0mm, 9.0mm, 10.0mm, respectively. The measurement of vapor transmission were conducted by the "cup method" in accordance with JIS(Japanese Industrial Standard) Z-0208. The experiment was made in the condition of 49.8mmHg vapor pressure difference and $40^{circ}C$ at constant temperature. From the experiment results, it was considered that Paulownia wood is very stable on moisture variation and any other material conditions. In this experiment we found that the vapor permeability and vapor permeance was reduced with the increase of wood thickness to vapor direction and vapor transmission resistance and specific vapor transmission resistance was increased with the increase of wood thickness to vapor direction. Besides moisture contents of adsorption and desorption side were about 5 percent and 14 percent, respectively. Mean value was 9.5 percent and about 10 percent in dry oven method. Moisture gradient was reduced with the increase of wood thickness for a small moisture difference of adsorption and desorption side.

  • A $TiO_2$ films in dye-sensitized solar cells was fabricated using $TiO_2$ colloidal sol prepared from titanium iso-propoxide used as a starting material by applying the sol-gel method. It was characterized by particle size analyzer, XRD, FE-SEM, and BET analysis. The adsorption isotherms of dye molecule on $TiO_2$ films were obtained at three different temperatures (30, 45, $60^{\circ}C$) and at three different pH (3, 5, 7). The adsorption kinetics of dye molecule on $TiO_2$ films were obtained at three different temperatures (30, 45, $60^{\circ}C$. The adsorption experimental data were correlated with Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model. Also the isosteric enthalpies of dye adsorption were calculated by the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. In addition, the adsorption energy distribution functions which describe heterogeneous characteristics of nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ film surface were calculated by using the generalized nonlinear regularization method. We found that efficient adsorption of N719 dye from aqueous solution onto $TiO_2$ films can be successfully achieved by dye adsorption conditions and morphology of $TiO_2$ films.

  • In this study, zeolitic materials were synthesized from Jeju Volcanic Rocks (JVR) using a fusion/hydrothermal method at NaOH/JVR ratios of 0.6 and 1.2. The crystallinities of the zeolitic materials at NaOH/JVR ratios of 0.6 and 1.2 were 25.5% and 59.0%, respectively. It was confirmed through the SEM image that the zeolitic materials covered the zeolite particle with a cube-shaped crystals. The Co ions adsorption by the zeolitic materials were to reach the adsorption equilibrium at 120 min. It could be better simulated in the pseudo-second order adsorption kinetic equation than in the pseudo-first order adsorption kinetic equation. The adsorption capacities (qm) of Co ions could be to estimate Langmuir isotherm better than Freundlich isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacities (qm) at NaOH/JVR ratios of 0.6 and 1.2 were 55.3 mg/g and 68.7 mg/g, respectively. It was found that there was a high correlation between the crystallinity of zeolitic materials and the adsorption capacity of Co ions adsorption.

  • This study proposes the use of a cobalt-based Prussian blue analogue (Co-PBA; potassium cobalt hexacyanoferrate), as an adsorbent for the cost-effective recovery of aqueous ammonium ions. The characterization of Co-PBA involved various techniques, including Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, and zeta potential. The prepared Co-PBA reached an adsorption equilibrium for ammonium ions within approximately 480 min, which involved both surface adsorption and subsequent diffusion into the interior. The isotherm experiment revealed a maximum adsorption capacity of 37.29 mg/g, with the Langmuir model indicating a predominance of chemical monolayer adsorption. Furthermore, the material consistently demonstrated adsorption efficiency across a range of pH conditions. Notably, adsorption was observed even when competing cations were present. Co-PBA emerges as a readily synthesized adsorbent, underscoring its efficacy in ammonium removal and selectivity toward ammonium.

  • The amount of the contaminants that can be adsorbed on the drain was evaluated for the effective remediation of the contaminated soil, and the contaminants adsorptivity of the drain was evaluated by comparing the isothermal adsorption model after carrying out the contaminants adsorption test of the reactants coated on the surface of the drain. The reactant used in the experiment is a natural zeolite, and the contaminants are copper, lead and cadmium. The results that Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model are compared to the adsorption amount according to the change of the initial concentration by the contaminants. As a result of the component analysis, because Si, Al and O are contained approximately 28%, 11% and 48%, respectively, it is identified that the material coated on the surface of the drain is the component of the zeolite which is the reactant for the adsorption of the heavy-metal (Cu, Pb, Cd) contaminants. The heavy-metal adsorption kinetic of the zeolite which is the reactant was decreased in order of lead, copper and cadmium. The important factor of the performance evaluation of the adsorbent is the reaction rate, and if zeolite is used as the reactant in the relationship between the maximum amount of adsorption and reaction rate, it can be utilized as the design factor that determine the removal order of the complex heavy-metal. In other words, because the maximum adsorption quantity of lead is smaller compared to copper but the reaction rate is relatively fast, it can be primarily removed, and copper can be removed after removing the lead. It was analyzed that Cadmium can be finally removed after that other heavy-metal is removed.
