We conducted this investigation to observe competitive adsorption phenomena among the heavy metals onto the available sorption sites of soil particle surfaces in sandy clay loam and clay soil collected from Nonsan city, Chungnam and Yoosung, Daejeon in Korea, respectively. Polluted and contaminated soils can often contain more than one heavy metal species, resulting in competition for available sorption sites among heavy metals in soils due to complex competitive ion exchange and specific sorption mechanism. And the adsorption characteristics of the heavy metals were reported that the selectivity for the sorption sites was closely related with electropotential and electro negativity carried by the heavy metals. The heavy metals were treated as single, binary and ternary systems as bulk solution phase. Adsorption in multi-element system was different from single-element system as Cr, Pb and Cd. The adsorption isotherms showed the adsorption was increased with increasing equilibrium concentrations. For binary and ternary systems, the amount of adsorption at the same equilibrium concentration was influenced by the concentration of individual ionic species and valence carried by the respective heavy metal. Also we found that the adsorption isotherms of Cd and Pb selected in this experiment were closely related with electronegativity and ionic potential regardless number of heavy metals in solution, while the adsorption of Cr carried higher valance and lower electro negativity than Cd and Pb was higher than those of Cd and Pb, indicating that adsorption of Cr was influenced by ionic potential than by electronegativity. Therefore adsorption in multi-element system could be influenced by electronegativity and ionic potential and valance for the same valance metals and different valance, respectively. But it still needs further investigation with respect to ionic strength and activity in multi-element system to verify sorption characteristics and reaction processes of Cr, especially for ternary system in soils.
In this work, activated carbon fibers (ACFs) were plated with copper metal using electroless plating method and the effects of surface properties and pore structures on chromium adsorption properties were investigated. Surface properties of ACFs have been characterized using pH and acid/base values. BET data with $N_2$ adsorption were used to obtain the structural parameters of ACFs. The electroless copper plating did significantly lead to a decrease in the surface acidity or to an increase in the surface basicity of ACFs. However, all of the samples possessed a well-developed micropore. The adsorption capacity of Cr(III) for the electroless Cu-plated ACFs was higher than that of the as-received, whereas the adsorption capacity of Cr(VI) for the former was lower than that of the latter. The adsorption rate constants ($K_1$, $K_2$, and $K_3$) were also evaluated from chromium adsorption isotherms. It was found that $K_1$ constant for Cr(III) adsorption depended largely on surface basicity. The increase of Cr(III) adsorption and the decrease of Cr(VI) adsorption were attributed to the formation of metal oxides on ACFs, resulting in increasing the surface basicity.
Adsorption isotherms of p-nitrophenol from its aqueous solutions on two samples of activated carbon fibres and two samples of granulated activated carbons have been determined in the concentration range 40~800 mg/L (ppm). The surface of these carbons was modified by oxidation with nitric acid and oxygen gas, and by degassing the carbon surface under vacuum at temperatures of $400^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$ and $950^{\circ}C$. The oxidation of carbon enhances the amount of carbon-oxygen surface groups, while degassing decreases the amount of these surface groups. The adsorption of p-nitrophenol does not depend upon the surface area alone but appears to be influenced by the presence of oxygen groups on the carbon surface. The adsorption decreases on oxidation while the degassing of the carbon surface enhances the adsorption. The decrease in adsorption depends upon the strength of the oxidative treatment being much larger in case of the oxidation with nitric acid, while the decrease in adsorption on degassing depends upon the temperature of degassing. The results show that while the presence of acidic surface groups which are evolved as $CO_2$ on degassing suppress the adsorption of p-nitrophenol, the presence of non acidic surface groups which are evolved as CO on degassing tend to enhance the adsorption. Suitable mechanisms compatible with the results have been presented.

Computational simulations of adsorption columns were carried out to investigate the removal characteristics of VOCs from a laundry shop. n-Decane was selected as the representative component among the VOCs emitted, and the activity of the adsorbents, such as activated carbon, was evaluated using commercial CFD code. The mathematical framework was composed of continuity and Navier-stokes equations, and the simulation was performed using the Matlab program. The adsorption isotherms of LDF, Freundlich, and Langmuir were evaluated, and the adsorption amount of the adsorption isotherms with the adsorption parameter was compared. The simulation was carried out using a particle porosity, dispersion coefficient, particle density, bed diameter, and bed length of 0.79, 42.4 ㎠/min, 485 g/L, 2.0 cm, and 2.5 cm, respectively. The effect of the gas velocity, dispersion coefficient, and voidage on the adsorption amount was compared in the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The simulation was carried out in the velocity range of 50 to 200 cm/min, dispersion coefficient range of 100 to 400 ㎠/min, and particle porosity range of 0.66 to 0.79. The simulation results of activated carbon with benzene coincided with the Langmuir isotherm. Three types of adsorption isotherm were compared under similar conditions, and the simulation results showed the efficient adsorption condition for hydrocarbons.
A $TiO_2$ films in dye-sensitized solar cells was fabricated using $TiO_2$ colloidal sol prepared from titanium iso-propoxide used as a starting material by applying the sol-gel method. It was characterized by particle size analyzer, XRD, FE-SEM, and BET analysis. The adsorption isotherms of dye molecule on $TiO_2$ films were obtained at three different temperatures (30, 45, $60^{\circ}C$) and at three different pH (3, 5, 7). The adsorption kinetics of dye molecule on $TiO_2$ films were obtained at three different temperatures (30, 45, $60^{\circ}C$. The adsorption experimental data were correlated with Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order model. Also the isosteric enthalpies of dye adsorption were calculated by the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. In addition, the adsorption energy distribution functions which describe heterogeneous characteristics of nanocrystalline $TiO_2$ film surface were calculated by using the generalized nonlinear regularization method. We found that efficient adsorption of N719 dye from aqueous solution onto $TiO_2$ films can be successfully achieved by dye adsorption conditions and morphology of $TiO_2$ films.
Basic dyes, Rhodamine 6G(R6G), Rhodamine B(RB), and Methylene Blue(MB), dissolved in water were used to investigate single-component adsorption affinity to the pearl layer fractionated according to the size. Unfractionated pearl layers were also used as adsorbents for the R6G and RB. The Langmuir and the Redlich-Peterson(RP) models were used to fit the adsorption data, and the goodness of fit was examined by using determination coefficient($R^2$) and standard deviation(SSE). The 3-parameter RP model was found to be better in describing the dye adsorption data than the 2 parameter Langmuir model, as can be expected from the number of parameters involved in the model. The adsorption affinity to the fractionated pearl layer was higher than that to the unfractionated layer The affinity order to the fractionated Conchiolin layer was found to be R6G > MB > RB. Furthermore, the dye adsorption capacity of the various types of pearl layer was found to be in the order, the fractionated pearl > powdered pearl > unfractionated pearl, exhibiting different adsorption isotherms according to the types of layer used in the study.

In this study, in order to remove Cd(II) from aqueous solutions, strongly acidic cation exchange resin(SK1B) by Diaion Co. was employed as an adsorbent. Experiments were mainly performed in two parts at room temperature($25{\pm}5^{\circ}C$) : batch tests and adsorption kinetics tests. In batch tests adsorption equilibrium time, pH effects, temperature effects, several adsorption isotherms, and finally desorption tests were examined. In differential bed tests, an optimum flow rate and an overall adsorption rate were obtained. In the batch experiment, adsorption capability increased with pH and became constant above pH 6 and adsorption quantity increased with temperature. Batch experimental data found that Freundlich and Sips adsorption isotherms were more favorable than Langmuir adsorption isotherm over the range of concentration (5~15ppm). The desorbent used in the desorption test was hydrochloric acid solution with different concentrations(0.01~2N). The degree of regeneration increased with concentration of desorbent and decreased slightly with the number of regeneration. In the continuous flow process using a differential bed reactor, the optimum flow rate was $564m{\ell}/min$ above which the film diffusion resistance was minimized. The overall adsorption rate for the removal of Cd(II) by cation exchange resin was found as follows ; $r=1.3785C_{fc}^{1.2421}-2.0907{\times}10^{0.0746C_i}\;q_e^{0.0121C_i-0.0301}$
The possibility of using carica papaya leaf powder for removal of copper from wastewater as a low cost adsorbent was explored. Different parameters that affect the adsorption process like initial concentration of metal ion, time of contact, adsorbent quantity and pH were evaluated and the outcome of the study was tested using adsorption isotherm models. A maximum of 90%-94.1% copper removal was possible from wastewater having low concentration of the metal using papaya leaf powder under optimum conditions by conducting experimental studies. The biosorption of copper ion was influenced by pH and outcome of experimental results indicate the optimum pH as 7.0 for maximum copper removal. Copper distribution between the solid and liquid phases in batch studies was described by isotherms like Langmuir adsorption and Freundlich models. The adsorption process was better represented by the Freundlich isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity of copper was measured to be 24.51 mg/g through the Langmuir model. Pseudo-second order rate equation was better suited for the adsorption process. A dynamic mode study was also conducted to analyse the ability of papaya leaf powder to remove copper (II) ions from aqueous solution and the breakthrough curve was described by an S profile. Present study revealed that papaya leaf powder can be used for the removal of copper from the wastewater and low cost water treatment techniques can be developed using this adsorbent.

Poly(methacrylic acid)-functionalized SBA-15 silicas (denoted as P-x-PMA/SBA-15 where x is molar ratio of TSPM/(TEOS+TSPM) in percentage in the initial mixture) were synthesized by co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and varying contents of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate in acidic medium with the block copolymer Pluronic 123 as a structure directing agent and then polymerization by methacrylic acid in the presence of ammonium persulfate as an initiator. The functionalized materials were characterized by PXRD, TEM, SEM, IR, and $N_2$ adsorption-desorption at 77 K. The investigation of phenol adsorption in aqueous solution on the materials showed that the poly(methacrylic acid)-functionalized mesoporous silicas possess strong adsorption ability for phenol with interaction of various kinds of hydrogen bonds. The adsorption data were fitted to Langmuir isotherms and the maximum adsorption capacity of the three functionalized materials P-5-PMA/SBA-15, P-10-PMA/SBA-15, and P-15-PMA/SBA-15 to be 129.37 mg/g, 187.97 mg/g, and 78.43 mg/g, respectively, were obtained. The effect of the pH on phenol adsorption was studied.

We investigated the selective deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) adsorption on layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanoparticles via studying the interaction between positively charged LDH nanoparticle as adsorbent and negatively charged adsorbates such as methyl orange (MO), fluorescein (FL), and DNA strands. The size controlled LDH $(Mg_{0.78}Al_{0.22}(OH)_2(CO_3)_{0.11}{\cdot}mH_2O)$ was prepared by conventional coprecipitation method, followed by the hydrothermal treatment. According to the adsorption isotherms, the adsorbed amounts of MO and FL were similar, however, that of DNA were much larger. The adsorption behaviors were well fitted to Freundlich adsorption model. The concentration dependent adsorption behavior on LDH surface was described in order to verify the selective DNA separation ability. The result showed that the LDH has advantages in selective adsorption of DNA competing with single molecular anions.
