  • Porous carbons have beef used as adsorbents, filters, catalyst supports, etc. due to well-development pore structure. Porous carbons can be prepared by two different activation processes i.e. physical activation by steam or CO$_2$, and chemical activation by KOH, H$_3$PO$_4$ etc. from various raw material. Recently, agricultural wastes such as rice hulls [1], coconut shell [2-31 and straws [4] are growing interest as precursors fur porous carbons due to its easy availability and cheapness. (omitted)

Potential of PVA templated Silica Xerogels as Adsorbents for Rhodamine 6G

  • PVA/silica hybrid xerogels were synthesized by sonohydrolysis of a mixture of 2-way catalyzed TEOS and water solution of PVA. PVA was successfully removed from the xerogels through calcination and its removal was confirmed through TGA analysis of the calcined gel. Microstructure of the gels was studied through SEM, XRD and FTIR. Nitrogen sorption studies were conducted to find out surface area of different samples. It was found out that the samples having PVA removed through calcinations have higher surface area (411.64 $m^2$/g) than the samples (353.544 $m^2$/g) synthesized without any PVA. Adsorption properties of these xerogels synthesized by using different ratios of components were studied by taking Rhodamine G6 as a model adsorbate. The experiments were conducted at room temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). UV visible spectroscopy was used to measure the concentration of the dye before and after adsorption. The adsorption data of Rhodamine G6 on PVA modified silica is described by the Freundlich's adsorption model.

Effect of Surface Morphology on Dimerization of tert-Butyl Mercaptan on the Surface of Amorphous Aluminosilicate Impregnated with Mn and Cu

  • A powder of destructive adsorbent was prepared by impregnating Mn and Cu on the surface of amorphous aluminosilicate. It catalytically dimerized tert-butyl mercaptan into di-tert-butyl disulfide on its surface. Turnover of the dimerization was strongly dependent on the surface morphology of the adsorbent, which could be altered by modification of aluminosilicate support. During the process of impregnation, which involved heat treatment at 500 ${^{\circ}C}$, the shape of the pore was preserved, though large fraction of micropores were eliminated. The reactive sites on the surface were poisoned as dimerization products strongly adhered on them. Therefore, high surface area was not always desirable. When the surface was heavily populated with “inkbottled” pores with a narrow entrance in uniform size, heavy poisoning of the reactive sites turned the destructive adsorbents almost useless.

Surface Modification and Anchoring Titanium Dioxide on Mesoporous Activated Carbons (다공성 활성탄의 표면 개질 및 이산화티탄 고정)

  • For the purpose of surveying any possibility of anchoring titanium dioxide on activated carbons to promote their activities as catalysts and/or adsorbents, two activated carbons were oxidized with ammonium peroxydisulfate and followed by anchoring titanium dioxide. The anchoring of titanium dioxide on the oxidized activated carbons were performed via the adsorption of tetrabutyltitanate, hydrolysis with deionized water, and calcination. The effect of oxidizing and anchoring treatment on the surface element composition, surface area, and pore texture were analyzed by XPS, BET and TPD. The oxidation of activated carbons with ammonium peroxydisulfate introduced carboxyl groups on the surface of activated carbons and these carboxyl groups promoted the anchoring of titanium oxide on the activated carbons. However, the treatments affected the surface area and the porosity of activated carbons.

천연 점토를 이용한 Pb(II)의 흡착에 관한연구

  • This study was carried out to investigate characteristics and Pb(II) removal effect of natural clays in the batch mode test. The effect of parameters such as temperature, adsorption time and coexisting cations on the sorption ability and characteristics was investigated to find out whether the clays could be used as adsorbents. Several natural clays from domestic have been investigated to have high specific surface area and have minerals such as SiO$_2$ and $Al_2$O$_3$. As a result, removal effects of Pb(II) on clays were reached at equilibrium in aqueous solutions by stirring about 20 minutes. The removal effect of Pb(II) was best for Kang Jin clay than other clays in terms of fixed time. Adsorption efficiency was not influenced by the possibility of continuous treatment system of wastewater which contain heavy metals by using natural clays from domestic.

  • Understanding the exact structure and surface characteristics of carbon materials is very important for design, synthesis, and utilization of the best carbon form with particular functions and high performance for practical applications such as selective adsorption adsorbents, energy storage materials, catalysts or catalyst supports, etc. This review paper focuses on carbon surface properties and the interaction between gaseous or liquid substances and carbon surface. Catalytic functions of carbon materials are reviewed including recent progress in synthesis and applications of nano-carbons.

  • For the continuous production of transglucosylated steviosides, cyclodextrin glucanotransferase from Bacillus macerans was immobilized onto Diaion HPA 75 (styrene-divinylbenzene resin) that was screened from ion exchange resins, synthetic adsorbents and chitosan derivatives. The parameters influencing enzyme immobilization were examined in order to maximize the activity of immobilized enzyme. The optimum conditions for immobilization turned out to be: contact time 2 hr at 30$circ$C, pH 6$sim$9, and enzyme loading 20mg protein/g resin at 4.4 Os/Kg as osmolarity. Competing with other molecules having low molecular weight, enzyme was immobilized reversibly. The activity of immobilized enzyme was as high as 180U/g resin when the diafiltrated solution of stock enzyme was used. The optimum conditions for transglucosylation were as follows: pH 6.0, temperature 50$circ$C, 30% substrate solution composed of 15% stevioside mixture and 15% dextrin of which value of dextrose equivalent was about 9.0.

$Mn^{II}$ Location and Adsorbate Interactions in (M)MnH-SAPO-34 and (W)MnH-SAPO-34 studied by EPR and Electron Spin Echo Modulation Spectroscopies

  • Manganese-doped H-SAPO-34 samples were prepared by an ion-exchanged reaction between H-SAPO-34 and paramagnetic Mn(II) species in methanol media and characterized by ESR and Electron Spin-Echo Modulation(ESEM) studies. In the hydrated (W)MnH-SAPO-34 measured in water, the Mn(II) ion was octahedrally coordinated with four framework oxygens and two water molecules at a displaced site IV of the eight membered ring window in the ellipsoidal cavity, while the Mn(II) ion was octahedrally coordinated to three framework oxygens and three water molecules at a displaced site I' of the six membered ring window in the ellipsoidal cavity in hydrated(M)MnH-SAPO-34 measured in methanol. The similar result was found in the experiments with methanol adsorbents except ethanol.

  • In this work we have studied the multilayer stepwise adsorption of gases on solid adsorbents based on the previously developed theory. It is shown that stepwise adsorption isotherms emerge from our theory if an ad hoc adsorption regarding the degree of occupation for each successive layer is abolished and the effect of lateral intermolecular interactions among adsorbate molecules is included. In addition to these the effect of vertical interactions has also been taken into consideration. It seems that the vertical interaction plays a role in deciding the shape and the position of steps in resulting isotherms. It is evident from this research that it is the lateral interaction that is responsible for stepwise adsorption as long as the adsorbent surface is uniform and temperature is sufficiently low.
