Clay based coating with zwitterionic functionality is used to remove cationic and anionic dyes. Adsorbent coating was prepared by the mixing of bentonite clay, acrylic polymer (AP) and polyethylene-diamine (EPI-DMA). Characterization was performed using SEM-EDX, XRF, X-ray mapping and FTIR analyses. The adsorption capacity of ZACC was found to be increased from 59.35 to 255.99 mg/g and from 45.84 to 70.09 mg/g for BG and AR1 dyes, respectively using initial concentration (50-200 ppm). Significant adsorption capacity along with mechanical and chemical stability formulates ZACC as an excellent composite coating for treatment of anionic and cationic dyes from industrial wastewater.

In order to apply the photocatalytic decomposition of aromatic VOCs, adsorbent prepared from MSWI fly ash was coated by $TiO_2$ solution to endow with photo-catalytic function. The effects of coating number, existence of light source and the type of $TiO_2$ solution used for coating were examined. Adsorbent coated with amorphous $TiO_2$ solution showed higher adsorptivity than adsorbent coated with crystal $TiO_2$ solution. Without light source, breakthrough curve of photo -catalyst absorbent for VOCs removal was similar to that of absorbent made from MSWI fly ash. On the other hand, breakthrough time was enlarged with light source and total removal efficiency of benzene and toluene was also increased. It can be explained as photo-decomposition effect of $TiO_2$ photo-catalyst. Total removal efficiency of benzene and toluene was increased according to the increase of coating number with light source. It was due to the effect of adsorption and photo reaction of photo-catalytic adsorbent. But total removal efficiency of benzene was lower than that of toluene. Because benzene was removed more effectively than toluene by adsorption, but photo - decomposition effect oi toluene was more high than benzene.
In conventional adsorption chamber, adsorbent is embedded in between heat exchanger fins by wire mesh. This method impedes heat and mass transfer efficiency. So in this study, to improve the heat transfer performance of heat exchanger, a fin-tube exchanger was coated with FAPO (Ferroaluminophosphate) zeolite adsorbent. The fin-tube heat exchanger has a fin pitch of 1.8 mm with a variation of adsorbent coating thickness of about 0.1 mm, 0.15 mm and 0.2 mm. By varying cooling water temperature and chilled water temperature respecively, heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient were investigated. As a result, the heat transfer rate and overall heat transfer coefficient increase with decreasing cooling water temperature and increasing chilled water temperature. Under the basic conditions, the heat transfer rate of heat exchanger with 0.2 mm coating thickness is 11% and 43% higher than that of 0.1 mm and 0.15 mm, respectively. The overall heat transfer coefficient is $189.1W/m^2{\cdot}^{\circ}C$, it is two times lager than that of 0.1 mm.

We prepared hydrophobic PDMS-coated porous silica as pre-concentration adsorbent for chemical warfare agents (CWAs). Since CWAs can be harmful to human even with a small amount, detecting low-concentration CWAs has been attracting attention in defense development. Porous silica is one of the promising candidates for CWAs pre-concentration adsorbent since it is thermally stable and its surface area is sufficiently high. A drawback of silica is that adsorption of CWAs can be significantly reduced due to competitive adsorption with water molecule in air since silica is quite hydrophilic. In order to solve this problem, hydrophobic polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) thin film was deposited on silica. Adsorption and desorption of chemical warfare agent (CWA) simulants (Dimethylmethylphosphonate, DMMP and Dipropylene Glycol Methyl Ether, DPGEM) on bare and PDMS-coated silica were studied using temperature programed desorption (TPD) with and without co-exposing of water vapor. Without exposure of water vapor, desorbed amount of DMMP from PDMS-coated silica was twice larger than that from bare silica. When the samples were exposed to DMMP and water vapor at the same time, no DMMP was desorbed from bare silica due to competitive adsorption with water. On the other hand, desorbed DMMP was detected from PDMS-coated silica with reduced amount compared to that from the sample without water vapor exposure. Adsorption and desorption of DPGME with and without water vapor exposing was also investigated. In case of bare silica, all the adsorbed DPGME was decomposed during the heating process whereas molecular DPGME was observed on PDMS-coated silica. In summary, we showed that hydrophobic PDMS-coating can enhance the adsorption selectivity toward DMMP under humid condition and PDMS-coating also can have positive effect on molecular desorption of DPGME. Therefore we propose PDMS-coated silica could be an adequate adsorbent for CWAs pre-concentration under practical condition.

Adsorption of toluene by activated carbon fiber (ACF) coated with dielectric heating element and desorption by applying microwave were investigated. In order to prepare adsorbent so that VOC can be desorbed by microwave heating, fine dielectric heating element with nano size was coated on the surface of the ACF using hybrid binder. Eight adsorbents (ACF-DHE, Activated Carbon Fiber coated with Dielectric Heating Element) were prepared with different amount of dielectric heating element, kinds of hybrid binder, and solvent. In order to investigate adsorption characteristics, BET surface area, pore volume, and average pore size were measured for each adsorbent including ACF. Breakthrough experiments with toluene concentration, flow rate, bed length using fixed bed reactor were performed to investigate adsorbality of adsorbent, and results were compared with that of the ACF. Desorption reactor was constructed with modified microwave oven to investigate heating effect on ACF-DHE by applying microwave power. Each adsorbent saturated with toluene were put into desorption reactor. Composition of desorbed gas generated by applying controlled microwave power to reactor was measured. Up to now, hot air desorption method has been used. Experimental results showed that desorption method with new adsorbent prepared by coating dielectric heating element on ACF can be used for industrial application.
The honeycomb adsorbents and adsorption process for carbon dioxide removal from fuel gas were investigated. Zeolite paper was made with Na-X zeolite powder and ceramic fiber as raw materials. $Li^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ or $K^+$ ion exchanges for Na-X zeolite and additional Na-X coating were performed on zeolite paper for increasing the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity, after that the adsorption characteristics of the samples were analyzed. Among the ion exchanged samples, $Li^+$ ion exchanged zeolite paper was most promising but its carbon dioxide adsorption capacity was less than expected for process application. However, additional Na-X coating was found to be an effective method for increasing the carbon dioxide adsorption capacity of the zeolite paper for process application. The carbon dioxide breakthrough test of the honeycomb adsorbent prepared with the zeolite paper was studied, and fuel gas treatment capacity was calculated when the honeycomb adsorbent was used in the rotary adsorption process.

Arsenic (As) is one of the elements having most harmful impact on the human health. Arsenic is a known carcinogen and arsenic contamination of drinking water is affecting on humans in many regions of the world. Adsorption has been proved most preferable technique for the removal of arsenic. Many researchers have studied various types of solid materials as arsenic adsorbent, and iron oxide and its modified forms are considered as the most effective adsorbent in terms of adsorption capacity, recovery, and economics. However, most of all iron oxides have small surface area in comparing with common adsorbents in environmental application such as activated carbon but the activated carbon has weak sorption affinity for arsenic. We have used an activated carbon as base adsorbent and iron oxide coating on the activated carbon as high affinity sorption sites and giving magnetic attraction ability. In this study, adsorption properties of arsenic and magnetic separation efficiency of the magnetized activated carbon (MAC) were evaluated with variable iron oxide content. As the iron oxide content of the MAC increased, adsorption capacity has also gradually increased up to a point where clogging by iron oxide in the pore of activated carbon compensate the increased sorption capacity. The increase of iron oxide content of the MAC also affected magnetic properties, which resulted in greater magnetic separation efficiency. Current results show that magnetically modified common adsorbent can be an efficiency improved adsorbent and a feasible environmental process if it is combined with the magnetic separation.
Aim of our study is finding adsorbents suitable for pre-concentration of chemical warfare agents (CWAs). We considered Tenax, bare silica and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-coated silica as adsorbents for dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP) and dipropylene glycol methyl ether (DPGME). Tenax showed lower thermal stability, and therefore, desorption of CWA simulants and decomposition of Tenax took place simultaneously. Silica-based adsorbents showed higher thermal stabilities than Tenax. A drawback of silica was that adsorption of CWA simulant (DMMP) was significantly reduced by pre-treatment of the adsorbents with humid air. In the case of PDMS-coated silica, influence of humidity for CWA simulant adsorption was less pronounced due to the hydrophobic nature of PDMS-coating. We propose that PDMS-coated silica can be of potential importance as adsorbent of CWAs for their pre-concentration, which can facilitate detection of these CWAs.
This research was done for possible treatment of impermeable surfaces rainwater runoff containing heavy metal ions by manganese oxide coated on polypropylene support. Manganese oxide was coated by Birnessite Coating Methods(BCM)and the coating analyzed by SEM and FT-IR techniques. The efficiency of heavy metal ions adsorption was also assessed via both batch and column tests. Adsorption efficiencies of Cd, Zn, Cu, and Pb were 99.4%, 98.9%, 96.7%, and over 95.7%, respectively. The adsorption progress pattern reveals quite fast adsorption at initial periods of treatment and change to slower rates at later times.
In this study, the optimization of active materials and the preparation of particulate adsorbents for the application of metal oxide-based adsorbents for the treatment of $H_2S$, an air pollutant and odorant, occurred in various industrial facilities were investigated. The adsorbents were prepared by using $TiO_2$, which has a high physicochemical stability and relatively high specific surface area among metal oxides and also by different kinds and contents of active materials. The correlation between the physicochemical property and adsorption performance of the adsorbents confirmed that the adsorbent containing KI, which is a typical alkali metal among the active metals, showed the highest adsorption performance. The relationship between the contents and the adsorption performance was non-proportional, but a volcano plot. From XRD, SEM and BET analyses, it was confirmed that the active material was exposed to the surface above a certain amount and also the adsorption performance was the best when the specific surface area and pore volume were $40{\sim}100m^2/g$ and $0.1{\sim}0.3cm^3/g$, respectively. For practical application, the adsorbent was granulated or coated on a ceramic support. It was also confirmed that the adsorbent showed high adsorption performance when the adsorbent was coated on the ceramic rather than that of the granulated support.
