  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the risk of being underweight between multicultural and Korean-origin adolescents. Methods: This study used the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-Based Survey data of 2016. A total of 46,457 underweight and normal-weight adolescents were included. General characteristics, health status and health behavior variables, and weight related variables were included. Weighted percentage and means were used to describe the sample. Simple and multiple logistic regressions were conducted using SAS 9.2. Results: From the simple and multiple logistic regression, multicultural adolescents showed a higher risk of being underweight (OR: 1.63, 95% CI: 1.20~2.20; AOR: 1.51, 95% CI: 1.01~2.27) than Korean-origin adolescents. Among the covariates, being female (AOR: 1.90, 95% CI: 1.72~2.10), being older (AOR: 1.18, 95% CI: 1.15~1.22), having poor self-health perception (AOR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.24~1.82), having longer hours of sleep (AOR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.09~1.16), having fewer days of exercise (AOR: 0.94, 95% CI: 0.91~0.96), and doing vigorous exercise less (AOR: 0.78, 95% CI: 0.68~0.89) showed a higher risk of being underweight. Self-rated health and effort to control weight were also significantly related to being underweight. Conclusion: Since multicultural adolescents are vulnerable to being underweight, it is necessary to develop intervention programs to reduce the number of underweight multicultural adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze and verify the effect of multicultural adolescents parental support and parenting attitudes on school life and social competency by using the primary data of the second period of the MAPS(Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study). The subject of this study in 2019 was 2,246 multicultural adolescents who were in the fourth grade of elementary school at the time. As a result of the study, it was found that the more positive and positive parental support and parenting attitude were, the higher the degree of school life and social competence of multicultural adolescents. On the other hand, the degree of school life and social competence varies according to gender, and it was found that female students were higher than male students. There was a significant difference in the degree of school life according to the mother's educational background, but there was no significant difference in the degree of social competence. These results suggest that parental support and parenting attitudes are major environmental variables in the educational ecosystem that affect the school life and social competence of multicultural adolescents.

  • This study aimed to examine the effect of adolescents' perceived parental blame (criticism) on learned helplessness and to examine whether maladaptive metacognitive beliefs and rumination sequentially mediate the relationship between parental blame and learned helplessness. The participants were 316 adolescents (Mean age=16.7, SD=0.75; 137 male, 179 female) attending grades 1st and 2nd in high school in South Korea. The participants were selected using a snowball sampling method, while the data was collected via an online self-report questionnaire. This survey was completed by the participants and analyzed using SPSS 28.0, Amos 26.0 (IBM Co., Armonk, NY), and PROCESS macro version 4.2 (Model 6; Hayes, 2022). The main results are summarized as follows. Firstly, the adolescents' perceived paternal and maternal blame indicated significant direct effects on learned helplessness. Secondly, rumination mediated the effect of paternal and maternal blame on learned helplessness. Lastly, paternal and maternal blame significantly affected learned helplessness through the sequential mediating effects of maladaptive metacognitive beliefs and rumination. This study elucidates the causal structure among the various factors influencing learned helplessness in adolescents, focusing on parental blame, maladaptive metacognitive beliefs, and rumination. Furthermore, considering the verified sequential mediating effects of maladaptive metacognitive beliefs and rumination in the relationship between adolescents' perceived parental blame and learned helplessness, these findings suggest that modifying maladaptive metacognitive beliefs may help to reduce learned helplessness among adolescents who perceive high levels of parental blame.

  • Purpose : It is now understood that blood pressure (BP) measurement in the routine pediatric examination is very important because of the relevance of childhood BP to pediatric health care and the development of adult essential hypertension. There hasn't been a reference table of BP for Korean children and adolescents up to now. This study was to make normative BP references and to provide criteria of hypertension for Korean children and adolescents. Methods : BP measurements were done on 57,433 Koean children and adolescents (male: 29,443, female: 27,990), aged 7 to 20 years, in 2005. Heights and weights were measured simultaneously. Oscillometric devices, Dinamap Procare 200 (GE Inc., Milwaukee, Wi, USA), were used for the measurements. BPs were measured 2 times and mean levels were gathered for the analysis. Outliers of 2,373 subjects with overweight per height, over +3SD, were excluded for the analysis. For the BP centiles adjusted by sex, age and height, fixed modified LMS method which was adopted from the mixed effect model of 2004 Task Force in NHLBI (USA) was used. Results : Normative BP tables for Korean children and adolescents adjusted for height percentiles (5th, 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, 90th, 95th), gender (male, female) and age(7 to 18 years) were completed. Height centiles of Korean children and adolescents are available from Korean Center for Disease Control and Prevention homepage, http://www.cdc.go.kr/webcdc/. Criteria of hypertension (95th, 99th percentile) and normal range of BP (50th, 90th) adjusted for height percentiles, age and gender were made. Conclusion : This is the first study to make normative BP tables and define hypertension for the Korean children and adolescents. Reliability and accuracy of Dinamap Procare 200 oscillometer for BP measurements remains debatable.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relation among adolescents' perception of parental overprotection, goal-seeking orientation, self-handicapping and academic procrastination. Questionnaires were administered to 1200 male and female high school students in Gyeonggi Province. A total of 942 questionnaires were statistically analyzed through mean, standard deviation, frequency analysis, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The major results of the study are as follows: First, adolescents' academic procrastination differed by school grades. Second, for the high-performing group, self-handicapping, goal-seeking orientation and parental overprotection were significant predictors of their academic procrastination. For the mid-level performing group, self-handicapping and goal-seeking orientation were significant predictors of their academic procrastination. For the low-performing group, self-handicapping was the only predictor of their academic procrastination. Third, for the high-performing group, self-handicapping meditated the relation between parental overprotection and academic procrastination. Those results provide useful information regarding proactive support or intervention for adolescents' academic procrastination.

  • In this study, we inquire what is the rules which is implicitly used by the adolescent group about bullying phenomenon. We inquire how to interpret the phenomenon from the adolescents'viewpoint and their opinions of how appearance and clothing determine the extent of bullying. After we discuss this problem, we propose an indirect solution to the cause of bullying. We selected a middle school boy by reason that boys have been more experienced than others according to a previous study and are at a keen adolescent stage of development. Moreover, 'ichime'phenomenon is seriously reported at a middle school student stage in the case of Japan. The purpose of the study was to analyze the following : 1. Research on an actual case of bullying in a middle school student. 2. the adolescents'viewpoint on characteristics of school bullying. 3. The cause of violence and injury from school bullying. 4. How appearance and clothing affect bullying. 5. The preference and uses of clothing worn by adolescents. The process of this study brought a substantially between quantitative and qualitative research. Theses questionnaires were administered to 320 middle school students in Seoul from the 14/sup th/ to the 25/sup th/ of June. The data totaled up to 280 subjects, which consist 121 male students and 159 female students except for invalid data.

  • This study was conducted to identify the determinants of regional body fat distribution of obesity(upper body obesity and lower body obesity) for adolescents. The macronutrient consumption pattern utilized the most important variables to test for potential determinants. A total of 726 adolescents living in rural areas in Korea had been observed for four years from 1992 to 1996 about their diet, sexual maturation, serum components and physical growth. The study design was similar to that of a case control study. Logistic regression analysis were used as an analytical method to identify the determinants of upper body obesity and lower body obesity. Odd ratios were estimated from the regression to identify the determinants of upper body obesity and lower body obesity. Odd ratios were estimated from the regression to identify the risk factors. Fat consumption pattern was the most frequent one among the three macronutrient consumption pattern of carbohydrate, fat and protein. Prevalence of obesity for the subjects was 9.5%. Prevalence of upper body obesity was higher in malestudents than in female students. On the other had, prevalence of lower body obesity was higher in females. The results of the logicstic regression analysis showed that the risk factor for upper body obesity was sexual maturity rather than dietary factors. None of the factors included in the analysis for lower body obesity appear to be the risk factor. The result may suggest that to develop a determinant model for obesity of adolescents, the model should include a wider range of variables other than diet, sexual maturity and changes in blood serum.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify variables influencing suicide ideation among adolescents. Methods: Data were collected from 235 middle school students in Chungbuk Province from April to September 2007. We used the Korean versions of Reynold's Suicide Ideation Questionnaire, Children's Depression Inventory and Conners-Wells' Adolescent Scale, Beck's Hopelessness Scale and Internet Addiction Scale-K for measuring the research variables. Results: Of the subjects, 23.0% were classified into the risk group of suicide ideation. Overall, the score of the suicide ideation scale was 14.25 (${\pm}16.38$). The score of the suicide ideation scale in female adolescents ($17.45{\pm}19.04$) was significantly higher than that in male ones ($11.17{\pm}12.65$). Depression was a major predictor of suicide ideation. ADHD, gender, internet addiction, and hopelessness were the other significant predictors of suicide ideation. Conclusion: A strategy for school mental health education should be provided in order to prevent suicide ideation. The function of school health and Mental Health Center should be reinforced in terms of organization and staff personnel.

  • The purpose of this study was to exam the effects of sociocultural attitude toward appearance on perceptual attitudinal body images and clothing behaviors. The research method was survey and the subjects were 447 male and female adolescents in Daejeon. The questionnaire consisted of 4 measuring instruments; sociocultural attitude toward appearance, perceptual and attitudinal body images, clothing behaviors, and subject’s demographic attributions. The data were analyzed by Cronbach's $\alpah$, x$^2$ test, t-test, factor analysis, cluster analysis, using SPSS program. The results were as follows. Adolescents had relatively high level recognition and internalization of sociocultural value toward appearance, and they perceived very thin body type as ideal body and had high interest of their appearance and weight. Sociocultural attitude toward appearance had important effects on adolescents' perceptual and attitudinal body images and clothing behaviors. The adolescents who are receptive to sociocultural value toward appearance had the tendency to distort their body as fat, showed high interest of their appearance and weight, and also showed high clothing interest & psychological dependency, clothing ostentation, and clothing conformity, but low clothing comfort than those who are not receptive to sociocultural value toward appearance.

  • Purpose: This study carried out a preliminary analysis of available literature and used the ecological approach to define a research hypothesis with focus on individual, family, and school variables related to early adolescents' urge to run away. This study also aimed to examine the influence of each of these variables in order to build a forecast model showing which variables have more influential on early adolescents' urge to run away. Methods: Materials were collected from 433 male and female fifth- and sixth-grade students at two schools in Gyeonggi Province. Analysis was carried out using SPSS/WIN 18.0. Frequency analysis, ${\chi}^2$-test, t-test, correlation analysis and logistic regression analysis were conducted. Results: The results indicate that personal factors related to runaway impulse are gender and previous runaway attempts, family-related factor family functionality, and school-related factor the area of stress from study. Conclusion: Based on the study results as above, individual, family, and school interventions need to be developed.
