  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of metabolically obese, normal-weight (MONW) phenotype and the association between lifestyle factors and the risk of MONW in Korean adolescents. Methods: Normal-weight (BMI, 5th to 85th percentile) subjects with ${\geq}1$ metabolic abnormalities were categorized as MONW phenotype. Data from adolescents aged 12 to 18 years who have participated in the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 1998 (n=751) and 2008 (n=455) were analyzed. Physical activity and dietary intakes were assessed. Results: The prevalence of hypertension and hyperglycemia in 2008 decreased compared with that in 1998 (P<0.001) but the prevalence of abdominal obesity, hypertriglyceridemia and low HDL did not changed. The overall prevalence of MONW in Korean adolescents declined over 10 years (P<0.001). Adolescent boys and girls engaging regular exercise significantly increased over 10 years (P<0.01). Physically active adolescents had a lower risk of being MONW in 1998. Dietary intake patterns were not associated with a risk of MONW. Conclusions: The prevalence of MONW among Korean adolescents declined over 10 years which may be due to the decreased prevalence of hypertension and hyperglycemia. The risk of MONW would be lower in individuals who are physically active.

  • This study investigated associations between healthy dietary practices and the odds of prediabetes among Korean adolescents. The data of 1,624 adolescents aged 12 to 18 who participated in the 2017-2021 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. Healthy dietary practices were defined according to Health Plan 2030 criteria, and prediabetes was defined as a fasting blood glucose level of 100-125 mg/dL. After controlling for confounders, adjusting odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for prediabetes were determined for different healthy dietary practices using multivariable logistic regression analysis. Compared with adolescents who engaged in healthy dietary practices, those who did not had a 1.63-fold (95% CI: 1.12-2.37) higher odds of prediabetes. In addition, adolescents who did not consume ≥500 g of fruit and vegetables daily and those who refrained from reading nutritional fact labels, which are both sub-indicators of healthy dietary practices, had a 1.66 (95% CI: 1.05-2.62) and 1.58-fold (95% CI: 1.06-2.37) higher odds of prediabetes, respectively, than those who did. Increasing the proportion of adolescents engaging in healthy dietary practices, such as consuming ≥500 g of fruit and vegetables daily and reading nutritional fact labels when selecting food, is imperative.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the structural relationship among maternal depression, adolescents' depression, and smartphone overdependence that influences externalizing problems in adolescents. Methods: This study used the data from 1,080 first-year middle school students from the 14th (2021) Panel Study on Korean Children by the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education. The data were analyzed by a structural equation model based on the least squares method using SmartPLS, and bootstrapping was utilized to confirm the mediating effect in the research model. Results: The direct paths of maternal depression, adolescent depression, and smartphone overdependence leading to externalizing problems in middle school students were all significant. Additionally, in the relationship between maternal depression and adolescent externalizing problems, the simple and sequential mediating effects of adolescent depression and smartphone overdependence were significant. Conclusion: It was found that maternal depression, adolescent depression, and smartphone overdependence not only directly influenced adolescents' externalizing problems but also did so through mediating paths among the influencing factors. Therefore, an integrated and systematic strategy that considers the mental health status and smartphone overdependence of adolescents, including the impact of maternal depression, is needed to take a customized approach to externalizing problems in adolescents.
