Reliability and Validity of the Korean Translation of Quantitative Checklist for Autism in Toddlers: A Preliminary Study

  • Objectives: We aimed to assess the test-retest reliability, internal consistency, and validity of the Korean version of the Quantitative Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (Q-CHAT). Methods: The Korean version of the Q-CHAT and the Korean version of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) 1.5-5 were completed by parents of 24 toddlers and preschoolers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and 80 unselected toddlers and preschoolers. Parents of the ASD group also completed the Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ), and Childhood Autism Rating Scale (CARS) scores were obtained from medical records. Results: The ASD group scored higher on the Q-CHAT than the unselected group. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of the Q-CHAT was 0.658, and test-retest reliability was calculated to be 0.836. The estimated area under the curve was 0.793. The total scores of the Q-CHAT in the ASD group demonstrated significant positive correlations with findings regarding pervasive development problems in the CBCL, SCQ, and CARS. A total score of 33.5 may be a useful cutoff point to use when identifying toddlers at risk of ASD. Conclusion: The Korean version of the Q-CHAT has good reliability and validity and can be used as a screening tool in order to identify toddlers and preschool children at risk of ASD.

A Study on the Fashion Attitudes of Adolescents and the Parents of Adolescents : Developing School Uniforms and Fashion Items (청소년용 교복 및 패션제품 개발을 위한 학부모 및 청소년 패션 태도 조사 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the differences in fashion attitudes between adolescents and the parents of adolescents. 562 adolescents and 163 parents' responses in South Korea are used for the analysis. Survey questionnaires specifically designed for the adolescents and parents are used to compare the differences of the two populations. The results suggest that adolescents and parents in South Korea have different evaluation values for adolescents' fashion goods and school uniforms. The Adolescents placed a premium on 'Comfort' and 'Design' for fashion goods and school uniforms. However, the parents placed a premium on 'Practicality' and 'Price' values for fashion goods and school uniforms. The school uniform items which were most accepted in Korean middle and high schools need the change in composition of items for four seasons. In purchasing behavior, the adolescents answered that they have more than one item of preferred fashion brand. The Korean adolescents prefer famous sportswear brand like Nike, Adidas and etc. The fashion market for adolescents in Korea is closely related with the parents in shopping behaviors. The comparison of the fashion attitude between parents and their children is more practical method for developing the adolescents' fashion items and young fashion market.

Adolescent Drinking Behaviors in Pusan City : An Analysis on the Sociopsychological Model (부산시(釜山市) 청소년(責少年)의 반주행위(飯酒行爲)에 관한 연구(硏究) - 사회심리적(社會心理的) Model에 의한 분석(分析) -)

  • This study analyzed the socio-psychological process of adolescent drinking behaviors. A total 1,732 high school students in Pusan city were studied by the questionnaire from May to July, 1985. A structural model based on review of the literature was examined in order to test the following three hypotheses: (1) sociocultural and environmental impact on the adolescent belief system for drinking, on drinking situations, and on experiences of deviation, (2) relationships among adolescent belief system, drinking situations, and experiences of deviation, and (3) impact of antecedent variables on adolescent drinking levels. All hypotheses were supported by the data. The important outcomes were discussed as follows: 1. Because interpersonal factors were influential for the adolescent belief system concerning drinking, public drinking education through mass communication or drinking education in the curriculum were recommended. In addition to sex variables, friends' drinking and sibling's drinking were shown to have a positive impacts on drinking situations. Also, adolescent self-reported parents' views on drinking had significant effects. Because adolescent deviant experiences were generally affected by environmental factors, it is recommended that positive extra-curricular activities at both home and school should be investigated. 2. There were significant relationships among adolescent belief systems, drinking situations, and deviant experiences. However, adolescent drinking behaviors in supervised situations had weak correlations with their belif systems and deviant behaviors. 3. Adolescent drinking levels were remarkably influenced by drinking behaviors in unsupervised situations. Because it is difficult to control actual adolescent drinking behaviors in unsupervised situations, it is important to fortify their belief system with continuous education programs.

Custody Evaluation Process and Report Writing

  • As in western countries, divorce rates in South Korea have recently been rising, and family disruption has become one of serious social problems. Parents are able to express their opinions and wishes confidently, but the thoughts and wishes of children, especially infants and young children, tend to be ignored. Children can also experience several emotional and behavioral problems during the process of and after their parents' divorce. When South Korean family courts determine custody arrangements, they typically do not have a systematic strategy and process based on custody evaluation to help children and their parents overcome conflicts and build healthy parent-child relationships after divorce. Furthermore, under the current court system, it is difficult for mental health specialists and child psychiatrists to intervene in familial conflicts as mediators or therapists during the course of divorce proceedings. Acknowledging these limitations, the South Korean family court system implemented a formal program for custody evaluations by child psychiatrists and psychologists in 2017. However, they have faced challenges such as a shortage of experienced specialist and lack of a training system or instruments for evaluation. In this paper, the authors aim to share professional knowledge of and experiences with aspects of the custody evaluation process, such as indications, procedures, methods, psychological tests, resources, and final report writing, to better serve children and their parents undergoing a painful divorce process.

Psychiatric Problems in the Student Victims of School Violence and Their Parents (학교폭력 피해학생과 부모의 정신의학적 문제)

  • Objectives : This study was conducted in order to investigate the influences of school violence on the mental health of student victims and their parents. Methods : A total of 56 (aged 7-18) student victims and their parents were selected to participate in a survey. The students had experienced school violence from June 2012 to October 2013. They completed a set of self-report questionnaires, including socio-demographic characteristics, family relationship, Impact of Event Scale-Revised, Child Depression Inventory (CDI), Beck Depression Inventory, Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale, and Parental Bonding Instrument to evaluate psychiatric complications and to understand the emotional bonding between them. Results : The student's level of impact of event was significantly related to the parent's level of impact of event (p<.001). The student's high CDI score showed positive correlation with high level of impact of event (p<.001). In addition, higher level of the student's perceived emotional support and understandability of family showed association with lower level of impact of event (p<.01, p<.05). Conclusion : The results of this study suggest that the psychiatric sequelae of school violence is seriously affected by family support and parent's level of impact of event. Therefore, more active intervention is needed for both students and their parents.

The Relationship between Parents' and Adolescents' Optimism : The Mediating Effects of Parents' Achievement Parenting behavior (부모의 낙관성과 청소년의 낙관성 간의 관계에 대한 부모의 성취적 양육행동의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of achievement parenting behavior on the relationship between parents' and adolescents' optimism. The subjects of the study were 514 adolescents who were selected from the first and second grades of middle schools in Busan as well as their parents. The results indicated that parents' achievement parenting behavior had mediating effects on the relationship between parents' and adolescents' optimism. In boy adolescents, parents' achievement parenting behavior had partially mediating effects on the relationship between parents' and boy adolescents' optimism. In girl adolescents, fathers' achievement behavior had complete mediating effects on the relationship between fathers' and girl adolescents' optimism. Moreover, it was observed that mothers' achievement parenting behavior had partially mediating effects on the relationship between mothers' and girl adolescents' optimism.

Effects of Parent-Adolescent Communication, Adolescent's Self-Esteem and Strategies in Peer Conflict Situations on Satisfaction with Peer Relationships among Korean Adolescents (청소년이 지각한 부모-자녀간 의사소통과 자아존중감, 친구간 갈등해결전략이 교우만족도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study investigates the effects of parent-adolescent communication, adolescent self-esteem, and strategies in peer conflict situations on the satisfaction of adolescents with their peer relationships. The subjects included students attending a girls' and a boys' middle school in Gongju City. Random sampling was used to pick a class from each of the three grades in the schools. 233 students, who's both parents were living, were used in the final analysis in an effort to examine the impacts of student communication with parents on student satisfaction with their friends. The findings were as follows: the subjects most often used the yielding type of conflict-resolving strategy, followed by the cooperating, compromising, dominating, and avoiding strategy-type. The girls showed a higher level of parent-child communication than the boys. Girls had high self-esteem and mostly adopted the cooperating type of conflict-resolving strategies, followed by the yielding, compromising, dominating and avoiding strategy-type. The boys mostly employed the yielding strategy type followed by the cooperating, compromising, dominating, and avoiding strategy-types. The results indicate that the satisfaction level with friends was high among those who used the avoiding strategy-type less and yielding strategy-type more. Girls were found to have high self-esteem and engaged in communication with their parents. The compromising, cooperating, and dominating types of conflict-resolving strategies did not exercise significant influences on their satisfaction with friends.

The Relationship between Anxiety and Depression Symptoms of Children with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Their Parents (외상 후 스트레스장애 아동의 정신병리와 부모의 우울불안 증상과의 관계)

  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to examine the association between the children's psychopathology and age, intellectual quotient, and parental psychopathology in children with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Methods: The emotional and behavioral problems of 35 children with PTSD (23 boys, 12 girls, mean age, $10.26{\pm}2.47$ years) were investigated by retrospective chart review. Their parents' anxiety and depression symptoms were also investigated. We examined the correlations between children's psychopathology and their parents' anxiety and depression symptoms, as well as their age and IQ. Results: There were positive correlations between maternal trait anxiety and depression, and children's emotional problems. State and trait anxiety of children with PTSD were positively correlated with age, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms were negatively correlated with age. Conclusion: Our results suggest that psychiatric manifestation of children who experienced trauma could differ according to the development stage, and the treatment of children with PTSD should involve parental education about the effect of maternal emotional states on children.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to develop the attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-After School Checklist (ASK) to evaluate the severity of ADHD symptoms and self-management ability in children and adolescents in South Korea. Additionally, we evaluated the reliability and validity of the scale. Methods: We developed the ASK to evaluate the effect of ADHD psychopathologies on self-management and interpersonal impulsivity. We investigated the reliability and validity of the scale with 1349 parents (male 56.9%; 1202 parents of non-ADHD children, 147 parents of children with ADHD) in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, Korea. Results: According to the construct validity test using principal constant analysis with the varimax rotation method, two factors explained 60.7% of the cumulative variance in ASK scores. Cronbach's alpha for the whole scale was 0.71. There was no statistical difference between mean ASK scores at test and retest. Mean total ASK scores of the ADHD group were significantly higher than those of the non-ADHD group (p<0.001). Conclusion: The ASK can be used as a reliable and valid tool to evaluate not only self-management capability of children and adolescents with ADHD in their academic and everyday life, but also their impulsiveness in interpersonal relationships.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze early adolescent-family stress and family coping according to differences in general charactiristics. This study is also intended to analyze relationship between early adolescent family stress and coping. The subjects of this study consisted of (292) middle school students of the city of sokcho. The data were collected between Aug. 23, 1993 to Aug. 28, 1993. At tools of measurement, McCubbin & Patterson's 'A-FILE (Adolescent-Family Inventory of Life Events & changes)' and 'A-COPE (Adolescent Coping Orientation for Problem Experiences)' were amended and made use. For the statistical analysis of data, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson Correalation Coefficient were utilized The results were summarized as follows: 1) General characteristics influencing the level of adolescent-family stress were parents status. (p=.000) 2) General characteristics influencing coping were parent's religions. (father: p=. 003) (mother: p=.039) 3) There was a significant difference between the level of adolescent-family stress & coping. (p=.000)
