  • A systematic procedure for the elements of system state matrix in multimachine systems with loads and eigenvalue technique which utilize stage matrix have widespread application in the analysis of small signal stability. Synchronous machines are represented by either a two-axis model or classical model. The interrelationship of submatrices of system matrix is investigated. Once elements of one submatrix are determined, they can be used to calculate the elements of the other submatrix. The approach is useful in the eigenvalue sensitivity analysis for various initial conditions and for the adjustment of generator controller parameters. It is illustrated for a three-machine and nine-bus multimachine system(WSCC system) with constant impedance loads.

  • A composite element method (CEM) is presented to analyze the free and forced vibrations of a cracked Euler-Bernoulli beam with axial force. The cracks are introduced by using Christides and Barr crack model with an adjustment on one crack parameter. The effects of the cracks and axial force on the reduction of natural frequencies and the dynamic responses of the beam are investigated. The time response sensitivities with respect to the crack parameters (i.e., crack location, crack depth) and the axial force are calculated. The natural frequencies obtained from the proposed method are compared with the analytical results in the literature, and good agreement is found. This study shows that the cracks in the beam may have significant effects on the dynamic responses of the beam. In the inverse problem, a response sensitivity-based model updating method is proposed to identify both a single crack and multiple cracks from measured dynamic responses. The cracks can be identified successfully even using simulated noisy acceleration responses.

  • In this study, the characteristics of exhaust emissions in medium speed diesel engine under various operating conditions were investigated through experiments to derive the optimum conditions for minimizing the exhaust emissions, especially, nitrogen oxides. The 355 KW$\times$1200 rpm medium speed diesel engine was intensively examined to investigate the trend of exhaust emissions in case that the parameters affecting combustion conditions such as fuel injection timing, intake air temperature and pressure, engine speed and load were changed. The exhaust emissions for 9 sets of medium speed diesel engine were analyzed in addition. From this study, NOx level could be reduced by 30~50% through the adjustment of retarded fuel injection timing, lowered intake air temperature and increased charging air pressure.

  • This paper presents a potable bio-signal measurement system using Bluetooth for the 24-hours continuous health state monitoring of the elderly and the disabled. The measurement system has the functions of acquisition of various bio-signals, wireless data transmission and adjustment of parameters such as gain and cut-off frequency. This measurement system is designed according to the international specifications of the recommendation of AAMI (Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation). The design targets of the developing system about volume and power consumption are 20x30x5mm$^3$ and 8mW.

  • A widely tunable SG-DFB (Sampled Grating Distributed Feedback) laser diode is proposed and its feasibility is confirmed through simulation. The new SG-DFB laser diode is composed of a pair of sampled gratings, some parts of which are gain sections and the other parts of which are phase control sections. It is shown that a few tens of nanometers can be tuned through the adjustment of two currents into the phase control sections. Higher output power is expected compared with a SG-DBR laser diode with similar parameters. The dynamic single mode operation is also observed in the time-domain simulation.

  • In this study, the effectiveness of existing streamflow data collection networks in the Han and the Nakdong River Basin is evaluated for various gaging plans of 5, 10, 15 and 20years planning horizons by the nonlinear integer programming method, and also a technique for adjustment and planning of the existing network is provided for the purpose of increasing the efficiency of the network in terms of ecomony. The objective function is minimization of the average sampling mean square error of regional regression model with regression parameters estimated by generalized least squares method.

  • This study suggested the practical method which can reduce the lead time of the field trial and design of the dies. The virtual manufacturing, with the die design is evaluated by computer analysis, reveals the impropriety of a design before making dies. Three methods for reducing the die making process occupying over 60% of the automotive development are like fellows : First, the crack virtually adjusting the blank holding force and draw bead force with a computer simulation. Second, the parts which can not remove the forming defects in spite of the adjustment of forming process parameters need to modify the part geometry or punch temporary shape. Third, the simulation before trial, field trial, and field trial simulation can be used effectively in the die design.

  • The MRAC theory has proved to be one of the most popular algorithms in the field of adaptive control, particularly for practical application to devices such as an hydraulic servosystem of which parameters are unknown or varying during operation. For small sampling period, the discrete time system becomes a nonminimal phase system. The $\delta$-MRAC was introduced to obtain the control performance of nonminimal phase system, because the z-MRAC can not control the plant for small sampling period. In this paper, $\delta$-MRAC is applied to the control of an hydraulic servosystem which is composed of servovalve, hydraulic cylinder and inertia load.

  • Contacting with ground in the post-card area size only, tire supports entire automobile weight. As well, it characterizes most of automobile running performance. Among the design parameters, the carcass contour becomes a key design factor. This paper deals with the time-effective optimal design of tire crown contour in order to improve the tire wear performance by employing a back-propagation neural network model.

  • The evolution of X-ray computed tomography (CT) has been based on the discovery of X-rays, the inception of the Radon transform, and the development of X-ray digital data acquisition systems and computer technology. Unlike conventional X-ray imaging (general radiography), CT reconstructs cross-sectional anatomical images of the internal structures according to X-ray attenuation coefficients (approximate tissue density) for almost every region in the body. This article reviews the essential physical principles and technical aspects of the CT scanner, including several notable evolutions in CT technology that resulted in the emergence of helical, multidetector, cone beam, portable, dual-energy, and phase-contrast CT, in integrated imaging modalities, such as positron-emission-tomography-CT and single-photon-emission-computed-tomography-CT, and in clinical applications, including image acquisition parameters, CT angiography, image adjustment, versatile image visualizations, volumetric/surface rendering on a computer workstation, radiation treatment planning, and target localization in radiotherapy. The understanding of CT characteristics will provide more effective and accurate patient care in the fields of diagnostics and radiotherapy, and can lead to the improvement of image quality and the optimization of exposure doses.
