  • Objective: This study aims to compare the usability of the adaptive touch design method with that of the height adjustable design method that are applied to the Korean QWERTY keyboard and Naratgul keyboard on smartphones, examine the results, and present practical implications. Background: Smartphone manufacturers have failed to satisfy every user with their uniform touch keyboard designs that do not consider the high use rates of keypad use. In reality, touch keyboard designing customized for every individual is impossible, but there need to be researches on was to improve usability by having touch areas changed automatically depending on user behaviors or having users adjust the keyboard height depending on their hand size. Method: As for the design methods, an object group was given smartphones with the adaptive touch design method and the other group those with the height adjustable design method. As they entered the same characters in the smartphones, typing error rates and text input speed were measured and the average values were compared. 35 individuals who would frequently use smartphones in daily life participated in the experiment. The group variable was the type of touch keyboards, and the test variables were typing error rates and text input speed, for which a T-test was implemented. Results: As for the QWERTY keyboard, the significant improvement effect was verified as the typing error rate of the adaptive touch design method was 4.21% but that of the height adjustable design method was 3.28% although there was no significant difference in terms of text input speed. As for the Naratgul keyboard, in contrast, the typing error rate of the adaptive touch design method was 2.5% while that of the height adjustable design method was 1.48%, which indicates a measure of improvement, but the effect was not significant. On the other hand, the text input speed per minute was improved as much as 22.2%, which is significant. Conclusion: First, the Korean touch keyboard usability of the adaptive touch design method and that of the height adjustable design method, when applied to Model A of Company L, showed significant difference from each other. Second, the height adjustable design method was applied to the QWERTY keyboard, the typing error rate was improved significantly. This indicates that as the keyboard height was raised, the number of buttons within the range of fingering decreased, decreasing the touch bias was reduced. Third, the height adjustable design method was applied to the Naratgul keyboard, the text input speed was improved. Application: When the QWERTY keyboard was applied to a smartphone as small as 5.5inch or less, it is highly probably that the height adjustable design method decreases the typing error rate. It may be considered to develop additional UX functions to make the keyboard font larger or give users the option to adjust button intervals in utilization of the SW advantages of the height adjustable design method.

  • This paper shows a design of a gripper with an adjustable working area to depalletize a delivery cardboard box of various sizes. The gripper should pick the box with only one flat surface to lift the boxes stacked close to each other. The lift force of the gripper is the vacuum suction force. To handle boxes of various sizes, the gripper adjusts the working area. The gripper operates four vacuum generators independently. The simultaneous rotation on different axes of four gripper-arms with suction cups moves the position of suction force. The six operation modes of the gripper are divided into the size of the working area. The operation mode is determined according to the size of the top side of the box. Experiments are conducted by lifting the box of various sizes. The gripper can pick the box of various sizes without vacuum leaks from unused cups. Also, the experiments verify the improvement of stability of the box by adjusting the working area of the gripper. The gripper can lift the box without deformation of the box by adjusting the working area.

  • Arbitration of tag collision is a significant issue for fast tag identification in RFID systems. A good tag anti-collision algorithm can reduce collisions and increase the efficiency of tag identification. EPCglobal Generation-2 (Gen2) for passive RFID systems uses probabilistic slotted ALOHA with a Q algorithm, which is a kind of dynamic framed slotted ALOHA (DFSA), as the tag anti-collision algorithm. In this paper, we analyze the performance of the Q algorithm used in Gen2, and analyze the methods for estimating the number of slots and tags for DFSA. To increase the efficiency of tag identification, we propose new tag anti-collision algorithms, namely, Chebyshev's inequality, fixed adjustable framed Q, adaptive adjustable framed Q, and hybrid Q. The simulation results show that all the proposed algorithms outperform the conventional Q algorithm used in Gen2. Of all the proposed algorithms, AAFQ provides the best performance in terms of identification time and collision ratio and maximizes throughput and system efficiency. However, there is a tradeoff of complexity and performance between the CHI and AAFQ algorithms.

  • In recent years, variable stiffness actuation has attracted much attention because interaction between a robot and the environment is increasingly required for various robot tasks. Several variable stiffness actuators (VSAs) have been developed; however, they find limited applications owing to their size and weight. For realizing their widespread use, we developed a compact and lightweight mini-VSA. The mini-VSA consists of a control module based on an adjustable moment arm mechanism and a drive module with two motors. By controlling the relative motion of cams in the control module, the position and stiffness can be simultaneously controlled. Experimental results are presented to show its ability to change stiffness.

  • In this paper, a small inverted-F antenna with adjustable characteristics is proposed with use of lumped elements, capacitor and resistor. Capacitor is inserted between end of the antenna and ground for size reduction and tuning of resonant frequency. On the other hand, $0{\Omega}$ resistor is replaced as the short line connected to ground. The movement of short point due to use of $0{\Omega}$ resistor results in providing variation of input impedance. Therefore optimum characteristics can be obtained only by proper choice of capacitor and short point without redesign of it's geometry. In order to check the validity, the proposed antenna is designed and fabricated for 2.4 GHz frequency band, and then is applied to a product of Zigbee wireless remote controller. As a result, the size of applied antenna is $8.5{\times}4.5mm^2$ and it is observed that the measured bandwidth and antenna gain are 150 MHz and 2 dBi respectively without redesign of the antenna.

  • As mechatronic systems have various, complex functions and require high performance, automatic fault detection is necessary for secure operation in manufacturing processes. For conducting automatic and real-time fault detection in modern mechatronic systems, multiple sensor signals are collected by internet of things technologies. Since traditional statistical control charts or machine learning approaches show significant results with unified and solid density models under normal operating states but they have limitations with scattered signal models under normal states, many pattern extraction and matching approaches have been paid attention. Signal discretization-based pattern extraction methods are one of popular signal analyses, which reduce the size of the given datasets as much as possible as well as highlight significant and inherent signal behaviors. Since general pattern extraction methods are usually conducted with a fixed size of time segmentation, they can easily cut off significant behaviors, and consequently the performance of the extracted fault patterns will be reduced. In this regard, adjustable time segmentation is proposed to extract much meaningful fault patterns in multiple sensor signals. By considering inflection points of signals, we determine the optimal cut-points of time segments in each sensor signal. In addition, to clarify the inflection points, we apply Savitzky-golay filter to the original datasets. To validate and verify the performance of the proposed segmentation, the dataset collected from an aircraft engine (provided by NASA prognostics center) is used to fault pattern extraction. As a result, the proposed adjustable time segmentation shows better performance in fault pattern extraction.

  • In this paper, the development of an adjustable load limiter is presented, which is a component of the seat belt. The adjustable load limiter is loaded at different levels for varied weights and heights of occupant. The recent regulation FMVSS 208 demands strict safety standards for different percentiles of dummy size. In this work, high- and low-level load conditions are proposed according to dummy scale and thoracic injury criteria. The suggested load conditions were verified by performing a sled test using the benchmark model. A dual-level load limiter has been developed on the basis of these tests. Experiments were conducted on the product performance, and finite element analysis was carried out; the results confirmed the points for improvement.

  • Recently, the construction industry has lively utilized system forms to improve the work productivity and safety of form work, and the beam table form is one of them. However, the beam table form is used limitedly for the construction of buildings where the same beam size is applied to every floor. To make it possible to apply the beam table form to a building where different beam sizes are designed according to the uses of floors, it was analyzed that among the components of the beam table form, the beam bracket, should be able to flexible adjust the size of the beam form only with simple operation. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to propose the conceptual design of "an adjustable beam bracket for beam table form" that allows the adjustment of beam form size with simple operation and has excellent applicability to construction sites as well. In case this study's conceptual design of adjustable beam bracket for beam table form is fabricated into a real thing, it is expected that the beam table form will be applicable to even buildings where different beam sizes are designed according to the uses of floors, thereby contributing to the improvement in the work productivity and safety of form work.
