  • This paper presents structural topology optimization that is being applied for the design of electromagnetic vibration energy harvester. The design goal is to maximize the root-mean-square value of output voltage generated by external vibration leading structures. To calculate the output voltage, the magnetic field analysis is performed by using the finite element method, and the obtained magnetic flux linkage is interpolated by using Lagrange polynomials. To achieve the design goal, permanent magnet is designed by using topology optimization. The analytical design sensitivity is derived from the adjoint variable method, and the formulated optimization problem is solved through the method of moving asymptotes (MMA). As optimization results, the optimal location and shape of the permanent magnet are provided when the magnetization direction is fixed. In addition, the optimization results including the design of magnetization direction are provided.

  • In this study a method of shape optimization is applied to two dimensional heat transfer system. For this the optimization problem is defined in a functional form including cost, constraints and the system governing equation. Then the material derivative concept in continuum mechanics and the adjoint variable method are employed for the shape design sensitivity analysis. With the sensitivity analysis results, an optimum is sought with the gradient projection optimization algorithm. The two dimensional isoparametric finite elements are used for accurate analysis and sensitivity calculations. The above method is employed to find the boundary shape to achieve a desired temperature distribution along a segment of the boundary subject to the maximum area constraint.

  • The topology optimizations of electromagnetic systems with the nonlinear and the eddy current effects are studied using the finite element method. The topology design sensitivity formulations of nonlinear magnetostatics and eddy current systems are derived using the adjoint variable method. A computer program is developed using object orient programming and applied to the topology optimization of a C-core actuator. A numerical study shows the effects of saturation and eddy current by comparing results of topology optimizations.

  • This research presents a multi-objective optimal design employing topological approach to maximize magnetic energy while minimizing structural deformation which is caused by magnetic reluctance force and magnetostriction. A design sensitivity formula is derived by employing the adjoint variable method (AVM) to avoid numerous sensitivity evaluations for a coupled magneto-mechanical analysis. The sensitivity analysis is verified using the finite difference method (FDM) in a C-shape actuator. A linear actuator used in a home appliance is examined for optimal design and demonstrates the strength of the proposed topology optimization approach.

  • A general formulation for shape design sensitivity analysis over a plane arch structure is developed based on a variational formulation of curved beam in linear elasticity. Sensitivity formula is derived using the material derivative concept and adjoint variable method for the stress defined at a local segment. Obtained sensitivity expression, which can be computed by simple algebraic manipulation of the solution variables, is well suited for numerical implementation since it does not involve numerical differentiation. Due to the complete description for the shape and its variation of the arch, the formulation can manage more complex design problems with ease and gives better optimum design than before. Several examples are taken to show the advantage of the method, in which the accuracy of the sensitivity is evaluated. Shape optimization is also conducted with two design problems to illustrate the excellent applicability.

  • This paper presents a new approach regarding thermal characteristics associated with a design of the high efficiency motor. The adjoint variable design sensitivity equations for both electromagnetics with respect to permeability and heat transfer considering conduction and convection terms are derived using the continuum method. For multi-objective topology optimization, FEA is validated in terms of electromagnetics and heat transfer by experiments. The proposed method is applied to a single-phase induction motor of the scroll compressor in order to control the direction of heat flow by maximizing/minimizing the temperature of the target area while maintaining the efficiency.

  • Sizing design sensitivity analysis of structures subjected to the harmonic vibration is performed using adjoint variable method. Constraint is the stress and sizing design variables are thickness, bending moment of inertia, and cross-sectional area of structures. Accurate sensitivities are computed and plotted sensitivity can be used as a design guidance tool. The accuracy of sensitivities is verified by the finite difference values. Also, optimal design of three-bar structure is performed using the computed sensitivity and feasible direction method while satisfying constraints and obtaining the minimum weight.

  • Within the optimization field, addressing the intricate posed by fluidic pressure loads on functionally graded structures with frequency-related designs is a kind of complex design challenges. This paper thus introduces an innovative density-based topology optimization strategy for frequency-constraint functionally graded structures incorporating Darcy's law and a drainage term. It ensures consistent treatment of design-dependent fluidic pressure loads to frequency-related structures that dynamically adjust their direction and location throughout the design evolution. The porosity of each finite element, coupled with its drainage term, is intricately linked to its density variable through a Heaviside function, ensuring a seamless transition between solid and void phases. A design-specific pressure field is established by employing Darcy's law, and the associated partial differential equation is solved using finite element analysis. Subsequently, this pressure field is utilized to ascertain consistent nodal loads, enabling an efficient evaluation of load sensitivities through the adjoint-variable method. Moreover, this novel approach incorporates load-dependent structures, frequency constraints, functionally graded material models, and polygonal meshes, expanding its applicability and flexibility to a broader range of engineering scenarios. The proposed methodology's effectiveness and robustness are demonstrated through numerical examples, including fluidic pressure-loaded frequency-constraint structures undergoing small deformations, where compliance is minimized for structures optimized within specified resource constraints.

  • Eddy current is usually generated in material with high conductivity by time-varying source such as AC current and also is induced in the moving source with relative velocity. The contactless magnetic brakes make use of the braking force from the eddy current generated by moving source and currently used for the secondary brakes of heavy trucks, buses and rail vehicles. This study aims to design the magnetization pattern of a permanent magnet type eddy current brake system to maximize the braking force. The analysis of the brake system is based on the two-dimensional finite element analysis. We use the sequential linear programming as the optimizer and the adjoint variable method for the sensitivity analysis.
