  • We have investigated optimal control strategies for prevention of ecstasy use. Ecstasy use has continued at raves and nightclubs in recent years and the reduction of ecstasy use has become one of the important issues in society. We apply optimal control theory to a model of the peer-driven dynamics of ecstasy use. Our goal is to minimize the ecstasy use class and the intervention cost. Optimal control is characterized in terms of the solution of optimality system, which is the state system coupled with the adjoint system and the optimality equations. The numerical simulations show the optimal prevention policies of ecstasy use in various scenarios.

  • Design sensitivity analysis method for the vibration of vehicle structure is developed using adjoint variable method. A variational approach with complex response method is used to derive sensitivity expression. To evaluate sensitivity, FEM analysis of ship deck and vehicle structure are performed using MSC/NASTRAN on the super computer CRAY2S, and sensitivity computation is carried on PC. The accuracy of sensitivity is verified by the results of finite difference method. When compared to structural analysis time on CRAY2S, sensitivity computation is remarkably economical. The sensitivity of vehicle frame can be used to reduce the vibration responses such as displacement and acceleration of vehicle.

  • In this paper, intervalwise receding horizon controls (IRHCs) are proposed for linear time systems subject to $H_2$ and $H_{\infty}$ problems. Uniform stability conditions are provided for those systems. Under given conditions stability is proved without using an adjoint system. It is also shown that under proposed stability conditions for $H_{\infty}$ problem, $H_{\infty}$-norm bound is satisfied. The results in this paper arc also applicable to periodic systems which belong to the class of time systems.

  • We present a level set method for numerical shape optimization of electromagnetic systems. The level set method does not only lead to efficient computational schemes, but also is able to handle topological changes such as merging, splitting and even disappearing of connected components. The velocity field on boundaries is obtained by a shape derivative of continuum sensitivity analysis using the material derivative concept and an adjoint variable technique. Two numerical results of dielectric optimization between electrodes showed that the level set method is feasible and effective in solving shape optimization problems of electromagnetic systems.

  • This research presents a multi-objective optimal design employing topological approach to maximize magnetic energy while minimizing structural deformation which is caused by magnetic reluctance force and magnetostriction. A design sensitivity formula is derived by employing the adjoint variable method (AVM) to avoid numerous sensitivity evaluations for a coupled magneto-mechanical analysis. The sensitivity analysis is verified using the finite difference method (FDM) in a C-shape actuator. A linear actuator used in a home appliance is examined for optimal design and demonstrates the strength of the proposed topology optimization approach.

  • Eddy current is usually generated in material with high conductivity by time-varying source such as AC current and also is induced in the moving source with relative velocity. The contactless magnetic brakes make use of the braking force from the eddy current generated by moving source and currently used for the secondary brakes of heavy trucks, buses and rail vehicles. This study aims to design the magnetization pattern of a permanent magnet type eddy current brake system to maximize the braking force. The analysis of the brake system is based on the two-dimensional finite element analysis. We use the sequential linear programming as the optimizer and the adjoint variable method for the sensitivity analysis.

  • Necessary and sufficient conditions are provided under which the weighted Moore-Penrose inverse AMN exists, where A is an adjointable operator between Hilbert C-modules, and the weights M and N are only self-adjoint and invertible. Relationship between weighted Moore-Penrose inverses AMN is clarified when A is fixed, whereas M and N are variable. Perturbation analysis for the weighted Moore-Penrose inverse is also provided.

  • This paper discusses the hypercyclicity of weighted composition operators acting on the space of holomorphic functions on the open unit ball $B_N$ of $\mathbb{C}^N$. Several analytic properties of linear fractional self-maps of $B_N$ are given. According to these properties, a few necessary conditions for a weighted composition operator to be hypercyclic in the space of holomorphic functions are proved. Besides, the hypercyclicity of adjoint of weighted composition operators are studied in this paper.

  • A numerical method for the solution of one-dimensional inverse heat conduction problem is established and its performance is demonstrated with computational results. The present work introduces the maximum entropy method in order to build a robust formulation of the inverse problem. The maximum entropy method finds the solution that maximizes the entropy functional under given temperature measurement. The philosophy of the method is to seek the most likely inverse solution. The maximum entropy method converts the inverse problem to a non-linear constrained optimization problem of which constraint is the statistical consistency between the measured temperature and the estimated temperature. The successive quadratic programming facilitates the maximum entropy estimation. The gradient required fur the optimization procedure is provided by solving the adjoint problem. The characteristic feature of the maximum entropy method is discussed with the illustrated results. The presented results show considerable resolution enhancement and bias reduction in comparison with the conventional methods.

  • This paper presents a 3D shape optimization algorithm for electromagnetic devices using the design sensitivity analysis with finite element method. The structural deformation analysis based on the deformation theory of the elastic body under stress is used for mesh renewing. The design sensitivity and adjoint variable formulae are derived for the 3D nonlinear finite element method with edge element. The proposed algorithm is applied to the shape optimization of 3D electromagnet to get a uniform flux density at the air gap.
