Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is an interesting material with good biocompatibility, high elasticity and hydrophilic chacrateristics. In this study, crosslinked hydrogels based on PVA, and poly(acrylic acid) (PAAc) were prepared by gamma-ray irradiation. PVA and PAAc powders were dissolved in deionized water, and then irradiated by a gamma-ray with a radiation dose of 50 kGy to make hydrogels. The hydrogels were then annealed in an oven at $120^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, 30 min and 50 min under nitrogen atmosphere. The properties of a hydrogel such as gel fraction, swelling behavior, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and adhesive strength as a function of PAAc content and annealing time were investigated. The gel fraction decreases with decreasing PAAc content and increasing annealing time. The thermal behaviors have shown different patterns according to the annealing time. The adhesive strength increases with increasing PAAc content.

The bond strength is one of the most important factor in establishing long-term success of esthetic restorative dentistry. So, various restorative materials have been introduced to improve the esthetic and physical properties. Ormocer (organically modified ceramic) was developed as a result of such efforts. This study was performed to compare the shear bond strength of ormocer based adhesive with that of existing dentin adhesive. In this study $Admira^{(R)}$ and $Admira^{(R)}$ bond of the ormocer system are grouped together for ADM, Single $Bond^{(R)}$ which is an one-bottle adhesive and Z-250TM which is hybrid composite resin of BIS-GMA system for SIN, and $Definite^{(R)}$ of ormocer and Etch & $Prime^{(R)}$ 3.0 which is a self etching priming/ bonding agent for ETC. The results of this study were as follows. : (1) In the comparison of shear bond strength according to different adhesive system, shear bond strength was increased in the order of ETC group, SIN group, ADM group. There was no significant difference between ADM group and SIN group. However, there was a significant level of difference between ADM and ETC groups as well as SIN and ETC groups( p<0.05). (2) Examination by a scanning electron microscope showed a well established hybrid layer and resin tag in both ADM group and SIN group, while ETC group showed a minimal formation of the hybrid layer when compared with ADM and SIN groups. From the above results, it may be reasonable to start the clinical application of ormocer system, and it is recommended that ormocer system should be used along with an ormocer based adhesive because ormocer system showed the lower shear bond strength when it used with other existing self etching priming/bonding agent. The self etching priming/bonding agent showed relatively low shear bond strength, and it is considered that the further study should be needed.
The purpose of this study was to perform quantitative comparisons of water permeable zones in both the adhesive and the hybrid layer before and after thermo cycling in order to assess the integrity of the bonding interface. Twenty eight flat dentin surfaces were bonded with a light-cured composite resin using one of four commercial adhesives [OptiBond FL (OP), AdheSE (AD), Clearfil SE Bond (CL). and Xeno III (XE)]. These were sectioned into halves and subsequently cut to yield 2-mm thick specimens; one specimen for control and the other subjected to thermocycling for 10,000 cycles. After specimens were immersed in ammoniacal silver nitrate for 24 h and exposed to a photo developing solution for 8 h, the bonded interface was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and wavelength dispersive spectrometry (WDS) at five locations per specimen. Immediately after bonding. the adhesive layer of OP showed the lowest silver uptake, followed by CL, AD. and XE in ascending order (p < 0.0001); the hybrid layer of CL had the lowest silver content among the groups (p = 0.0039). After thermocycling, none of the adhesives manifested a significant increase of silver in either the adhesive or the hybrid layer. SEM demonstrated the characteristic silver penetrated patterns within the interface. It was observed that integrity of bonding was well maintained in OP and CL throughout the thermocycling process. Adhesive-tooth interfaces are vulnerable to hydrolytic degradation and its permeability varies in different adhesive systems, which may be clinically related to the restoration longevity.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the changes of shear bond strengths and failure patterns in orthodontic resin adhesives according to the water immersion time. Metal brackets were bonded to the specimens involving the premolars with chemical-cured($Concise^{\circledR}$) and light-cured($Transbond^{\circledR}$) adhesives. The shear bond strength was measured on universal testing machine and the failure patterns were assessed with the adhesive remnant index(ARI) after storage in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 day, 1 week and 1, 3, and 6 months, respectively. The results were as follows. 1. The shear bond strengths at the 6 month in both Concise and Transbond were significantly higher than those at the 1 day, 1 week and 1 month(p<0.05). There were positive correlations between shear bond strength and water immersion time in both Concise and Transbond(P<0.01). 2. There were no significant differences in shear bond strength between Concise and Transbond. 3. The brackets were failed primarily at the bracket base-adhesive interface and there was no significant difference in the incidence of ARI scores according to the water immersion time.

The objective of this study was to apply the vibration technique to reduce the viscosity of bonding adhesives and thereby compare the bond strength and resin penetration in enamel and dentin achieved with those gained using the conventional technique and vibration technique. For enamel specimens, thirty teeth were sectioned mesio-distally. Sectioned two parts were assigned to same adhesive system but different treatment(vibration vs. non-vibration). Each specimen was embedded in 1-inch inner diameter PVC pipe with a acrylic resin. The buccal and lingual surfaces were placed so that the tooth and the embedding medium were at the same level. The samples were subsequently polished silicon carbide abrasive papers. Each adhesive system was applied according to its manufacture's instruction. Vibration groups were additionally vibrated for 15 seconds before curing. For dentin specimen, except removing the coronal part and placing occlusal surface at the mold level, the remaining procedures were same as enamel specimen. Resin composite(Z250. 3M. U.S.A.) was condensed on to the prepared surface in two increments using a mold kit(Ultradent Inc., U.S.A.). Each increments was light cured for 40 seconds. After 24 hours in tap water at room temperature, the specimens were thermocycled for 1000cycles. Shear bond strengths were measured with a universal testing machine(Instron 4465, England). To investigate infiltration patterns of adhesive materials, the surface of specimens was examined with scanning electron microscope. The results were as follows: 1. In enamel the mean values of shear bond strengths in vibration groups(group 2, 4, 6) were greater than those of non-vibration group(group 1, 3, 5). The differences were statistically significant except AQ bond group. 2. In dentin, the mean values of shear bond strengths in vibration groups(group 2, 4, 6) were greater than those of non-vibration groups(group 1, 3, 5). But the differences were not statistically significant except One-Up Bond F group. 3. The vibration group showed more mineral loss in enamel and longer resin tag and greater number of lateral branches in dentin under SEM examination.

Orthodontic brackets often need to be bonded to porcelain such as porcelain fused to metal crowns and porcelain jacket crowns. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical usability of direct bonding system on porcelain teeth by measuring shear bond strength according to various conditions and observing adhesive failure patterns. The specimens, 20 maxillary premolars and 80 porcelain teeth that were produced by duplication of the labial surface of a maxillary first premolar were used and randomly divided into four groups of twenty teeth each. The 5 different preparation procedures tested: (1) application of 37% phosphoric acid on natural teeth, (2) sandblasting on porcelain surfaces, (3) sandblasting and application of 9.6% hydrofluoric acid on porcelain surfaces, (4) sandblasting and application of silane on porcelain surface, (5) sandblasting and application of 9.6% hydrofluoric acid and silane on porcelain surfaces. The metal brackets were bonded with Transbond $XT^{(R)}$ bonding material. The shear bond strength was tested by the micro universal testing machine(Kyung-Sung, Korea) and the amount of residual adhesive on the tooth surface after debonding was examined by stereoscope and assessed with an adhesive remnant index. The results of this study suggest that the direct bonding system on porcelain teeth with sandblasting, HF and porcelain primer is clinically useful.

Knives are most frequently used as weapons in violent crimes. Criminals leave behind knife sheaths made of paper and tape at crime scenes. It is difficult to develop fingerprints using tape attached to a porous surface, resulting in the need to explore effective techniques for identifying fingerprints as well as the distribution of fingerprints on each surface, when evidence such as paper knife sheaths are found. In this study, 50 knife sheaths were prepared. The cyanoacrylate fuming (CA fuming) method was applied to develop fingerprints on the non-adhesive side of the tape, and a dual-purpose 1,2-indanedione/Zn (1,2-IND/Zn) reagent was used to separate tape from paper while simultaneously developing fingerprints on the paper. The fingerprints on the adhesive side of the tape were developed using Wet Powder Black®. Using the R statistical analysis program (The R Foundation for Statistical Computing), we used a heat map to indicate the location of fingerprints developed from each surface. More fingerprints were detected at the ends than in the center of the adhesive side of the tape, and although the non-adhesive sides of tape and paper did not present clear distribution patterns, many fingerprints were developed that had sufficient clarity for personal identification. The results of this study may be applicable for processing evidence when paper sheaths are found at crime scenes.
Vertebrates with different habitats have different proportions of visual cells, with the rod cells responding to scotopic vision and the cone cells responding to photopic and color vision in their retinas. The present work studied whether the kinds and arrangement patterns of the cone cells and interlocking morphology of the lens were related to the kind of preys and habitats in the genus Zacco. The retinas were observed by a light microscopy using H-E staining method and the interlocking formula of the lens fibers were investigated by a scanning electron microscopy. The interlocking formula of the lens fibers of Z. temmincki is an ' anchor and socket ' connection, and that of Z. platypus is a ' ball and socket ' connection. The cone cells of Z. platypus and Z. temmincki constituted compacted mosaic patterns of row type. Away from the center, the double and single cone cells gradually increased in diameter. Zacco temmincki had identical double cone cells and Z. platypus had non-identical double and single cone cells. The eyes of Z. temminckifeeding on a moving aquatic insects in relative limpid water and swift current of mid and upper stream have better resolution than that of Z. platypus feeding on mainly adhesive algae and some aquatic insects in slightly turbid water of mid stream.

Nozzle printing technology has been usually used for adhesive patterning to encapsulate electronic devices. Film formation of functional materials by nozzle printing is a great challenge. The characteristics of nozzle printing of organic ink were investigated systematically in this paper. TAPC as an organic emitting material was used as an ink for nozzle printing experiment to form the patterns in this study. Printed pattern width was increased as the ink flow rate and the printed substrate temperature were increased. The patterns showed a coffee-ring shape.
