플라즈마 디스플레이 패널의 새로운 표시기간 중첩 프라이밍 방전 기술 (Novel Priming Discharge Overtopping with Display Period Technique for the Plasma Display Panels)

  • 램프(ramp) 파형의 프라이밍 펄스를 표시방전 유지기간에 중첩시켜 인가함으로써, 단일 구동회로를 사용하여 플라즈마 디스플레이 패널(PDP)의 전체를 동시에 방전시킬 수 있는 새로운 프라이밍(priming) 방전기술을 고안하였다. 실험결과로부터 표시방전이 없는 화소에만 프라이밍 방전이 일어남을 확인하였으며 표시방전은 프라이밍 펄스의 영향을 거의 받지 않는다는 것을 알았다. 또한 제안된 프라이밍 방전 기술을 적용한 구동방식을 사용하여 0.7 [${\mu}s$]의 어드레스 펄스폭을 가지는 고속 구동을 실현하였고 40[V]의 넓은 어드레스 전압 범위를 얻었다. 이 결과는 1080개의 수평주사선수를 가지는 full-HDTV PDP를 밝기의 감소 없이 구동할 수 있으며 이 기술은 상용의 구동IC를 사용할 수 있도록 설계되었으므로 상용화 가능성도 높다.

  • By the voltage threshold (Vt) close-curve measurement method, the changes in the discharge characteristics such as a firing voltage and IR emission among the three electrodes were examined relative to the low or high panel temperature ranging from -10 to $80^{\circ}$. The variation in the panel temperature was found significantly influence the surface discharge between the MgO surfaces rather than the plate gap discharge between the MgO and phosphor layers. Based on this experimental observation, a modified reset waveform that alleviates the surface discharge during a ramp-up and -down period was deeloped. By adopting the proposed reset waveform, a stable address discharge could be obtained irrespective of the panel temperature variation.

  • The discharge characteristics of AC plasma display were investigated as a function of the voltage and the frequency of the pulses applied to the address electrode during sustain period. The maximum sustain voltage of display cell decreased with increasing the frequency of the pulses applied to the address electrode during sustain period. Applying the pulses to the address electrode resulted in improvement of luminance and luminous efficiency at the same time.

  • In this paper, new address electrode having separated dual electrodes is suggested to reduce addressing time in ac PDP. It had been found that both the formative and jitter width of the suggested electrode are improved by $10{\sim}20$ % compared with the conventional one on IMID 04'. So we experiment other several kinds of the separated electrodes, and the change in discharge characteristics is analyzed by using a two-dimensional fluid simulation. The key feature of the suggested structure is that the distribution of Xe and Ne ion is controllable during the address periods without significant increases in the capacitive load of the address electrodes.

  • Difference in the structure of AC PDP cells makes the cells have various discharge characteristics. Therefore, a ramp-reset must be adjusted for the stable driving of AC PDP. If any ramp-reset can reduce the difference in discharge characteristics between cells, the conditions of the address discharge could become almost the same. It is very important to understand these to design a good driving waveform. In this paper, we proved the mentioned facts with the change of barrier rib heights.

  • The vacuum sealing method is adopted to minimize the residual impurity gas by enhancing a base vacuum level, and the resultant changes in the reset, address, and sustain discharge characteristics, such as a firing voltage, IR emission, and ICCD image, were examined in comparison with the conventional sealing method in the 42-in. AC-PDP. In the PDP cells fabricated by the vacuum sealing method, the ICCD observation illustrates that the discharge is initiated and extinguished very fast and its IR emission intensity is high.

  • With the high sustain frequency at 250 kHz, a three-dimensional diagnostics of excited xenon atoms was investigated by the emission and absorption microscopic spectroscopy for plasma display panels, spatiotemporally. As a typical feature of the emissions, a broad discharge peak was observed on the temporal cathode and a sharp one was monitored on the anode, at the high frequency. However, the discharge starts from the cathode edge, actually, that is a discharge space on the floated address (or data) electrode. Spatially, the dense emission and absorption peak were observed in the discharge space between the sustain electrodes gap. Overall, the microdischarge at high sustain frequency showed priming dominant characteristics.

A New Driving Scheme for Reduction of Addressing time and its Dispersion in AC PDP

  • The conditions of the wall charges and priming particles in a unit discharge cell in AC PDP seriously affect the addressing discharge characteristics in the driving method with ramped setup pulse. Moreover, the discharge conditions at the end of the scan line may be different from the first scan line because of the difference of about 1ms address time. Consequently, the addressing time and its dispersion may be different for any two discharge cells that lead to misfiring and the increase in the total addressing time. In order to improve the addressing time and its dispersion, we have applied different addressing voltage at each cell such as progressively increase pulse voltage instead of constant one. As a result, the addressing time and its dispersion of all cells were improved by about 30% compared with the conventional driving method.

  • Until now, there is no report for the relationship between the condition of addressing and the characteristics of surface discharge in ac- PDP. We have known that such experiments were important to drive a-PDP. Therefore, This paper deals with the probability of transfer and the characteristics of luminance according to addressing voltage (Va), blocking voltage (Vg)in addressing period and sustain voltage(Vs)in sustaining period and we use waveform according to ADS (Address and Display period Separation) method.
