District heating and cooling systems offer highly efficient energy utilization and maintenance by centralizing heat management. More pumping power, however, is required because the water has to travel long distance from heat source to the users. In the present study, a trace of drag reduction additives is added to the District Cooling system to achieve a significant drag reduction and save pumping power. Water-soluble polymers, surfactants, and environment-friendly degradable polymers are used as effective drag reducing additives. Time dependent percent drag reductions are compared for various additive solutions at 100 wppm concentration for different water velocity. Without as an anionic surfactant, copolymer was most effective in percent drag reduction. It is found that there exists an optimal condition when copolymer is mixed with SDS. An environment-friendly degradable polymer, xanthan gum, is found to be a significant drag reduction additive. Ice slurry systems, can give less pressure drops compared with chilled water system for certain condtions. Drag reduction additives were also effective for the ice slurry system.

The effects of pump and temperature on drag reducing characteristics were investigated with a polymer(PAAM : Polyacrylamide) and three kinds of surfactants(CTAC, STAC, Habon-G) in fully developed turbulent pipe flows with various experimental parameters such as additive concentration(30~500ppm), pipe diameter(4.65mm, 10.85mm), Reynolds number($4{\times}10^4{\sim}10^5$) and working fluid temperature($20{\sim}80^{\circ}C$). The pump effect on PAAM was severe such that the drag reduction rates obtained with pump were decreased upto 30% as compared with those obtained with compressed air in 4.65mm test section. The temperature effect on PAAM was noticeably considerable, that is, the higher temperaute, the less drag reduction rate. On the other hand, no significant pump effect on the surfactants was observed. The drag reducing effectiveness of CTAC was totally lost in the temperature ragne of 60 to $80^{\circ}C$, whereas STAC and Habon-G kept their distinct drag reducing capability at a temperature of $80^{\circ}C$. This study clearly elucidated that for DHC application of drag reducing additives, the pump and temperature effects as well as additive concentration and pipe diameter should be carefully taken into consideration.
There have been many attempts to reduce the cost of transportation. Especially, drag reduction of heavy vehicles has enormous influence on energy saving by reducing the driving power of the vehicles. In this study, the effects of drag-reducing additive devices such as side skirt, boat tail and cab-roof fairing on the drag reduction of a 5 ton truck model were experimentally investigated. The aerodynamic performance of these flow-control devices attached to heavy vehicle was evaluated through wind tunnel test. In addition, flow patterns around the truck model were visualized by using smoke tube method. The drag coefficient is reduced by up to 5.7%, 7.16% and 22.2% by the side skirt, boat tail and cab-roof fairing, respectively. The interactive effect of the side skirt and boat tail was also investigated.

A technique for calculating the additive drag of the inlet in supersonic flow was studied using commercial CFD software, STAR-CCM+, which provides a efficient way of 3 dimensional flow analysis with polyhedron-shaped grid system. Three configurations were chosen and applied to the calculation with various flow conditions of two different free stream Mach No. and some mass flow ratios. Comparisons with results from wind tunnel test gave good agreements. Though computation were carried out with the inviscid and compressible flow around the supersonic inlet for the supercritical condition, ignoring the viscous effects is concluded to give little effects on the accuracy of the additive drag calculation and to make the calculation more efficient owing to less effort and time consumed for grid system build-up and for iteration because of less grid number and simpler boundary condition.
Experimental investigation of drag reduction by adding a polymer additive(polyacrylamid, N-401P) into water is carried out in a Circular Water Channel. The effect of viscosity, surface roughness and degradation as a function of running time is also measured with varying the concentration of polymer additives(20ppm,100ppm) and Reynolds numbers. Near and far wakes past a circular cylinder are observed by LDV. Drag forces are measured with a strain-gaged device. The experimental results show that around 5%-30% of drag reduction with the polymer solution are observed. The larger effects of drag reduction can be found at low range of Reynolds number, more roughened surface cylinder. The effect of polymer solution for near wakes is larger than for far wakes.

A 2D-LDV system was employed to investigate the flow field characteristics in fully developed drag reducing turbulent channel flows. The additive used in this study was Habon-G which showed splendid drag reduction effect and minimum mechanical degradation trend in the closed flow circulation loop. In order to have better understanding of the drag reduction mechanism, the instantaneous velocities were carefully measured under various experimental conditions and the flow characteristics including time-averaged velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stresses were carefully assessed. The time-averaged velocity profiles of surfactant flows showed more parabolic shape(typically shown in a laminar flow) together with significant suppression of turbulent production, yielding the shear induced micelle structure orienting in the flow direction due to its isotropic characteristics. Especially it was observed that the maximum intensity for drag reducing flows was shifted away from the wall and that the streamwise and normal turbulent intensities were strongly altered. This phenomenon strongly suggests that the viscous sublayer becomes thicker with addition of surfactant. Turbulent momentum transport was drastically suppressed across the whole drag reducing channel flow.

The long term drag reduction characteristics of Habon-G solution were investigated in the KIER pilot-scaled district heating simulation system. Test runs were implemented for 30 days without interruption. Pressure drop, flow rate and power consumption of surfactant (Habon-G) solution were regularly observed and compared with those of plain water. The experimental results suggest that the surfactant can be effectively applied to the DH transmission system for considerably long period wthout significant loss of its drag reduction capability even though the concentration of the additive may gradually decrease in the first stage of the experiment because of absorption.

Two-phase flow phenomena are observed in many industrial facilities and make much importance of optimum design for nuclear power plant and the liquid transportation system. The particular flow pattern depends on the conditions of pressure, flow velocity, and channel geometry. However, the research on drag reduction in two-phase flow is not intensively investigated. Therefore, experimental investigations have been carried out to analyze the drag reduction and void fraction by polymer addition in the two-phase flow system. We find that the polymer solution changes the characteristic of two-phase flow. The peak position of local void friction moves from tile wall of the pipe to the center of the pipe when polymer concentration increase. And then we predict that it is closely related with the frau reduction.

The drag reduction(DR) of non-ionic surfactant and polymer according to the variation of fluid velocity, temperature and surfactant concentration was investigated experimentally. For this experiment, the kind of surfactant was non ionic amine-oxide and the kinds of polymer were polyacrylamide and xantan gum. An experimental apparatus equipped with one water storage tanks was built and two flow meters, two pressure gauges for data logging system was installed. Results showed that the kinds of polymer, polyacrylamide and xantan gum, had DR of below 20% for below 500 ppm in fluid temperature of $50{\sim}80^{\circ}C$. But the kind of surfactant, amine oxide, had DR of above 40% for 500~1000 ppm in fluid temperature of $50{\sim}80^{\circ}C$. As a result, amin oxide showed better materials to use to the district heating system.
When the liquid with the additive of ppm unit of a polymer flows, the pressure drop can be manifestly decreased compared to that of pure liquid: that's the drag reduction. This method is that a small amount of a polymer which doesn't make the transformation of the properties of the working fluid is dissolved into the working fluid, the links of chains of the polymer do a buffer action to the molecules of the working fluid which come out between near the wall of the pipe and the interface, so that the pressure drop is dramatically decreased. When we transport the fluid, therefore, we can save a lot of pumping power, or we can increase the transportation capacity with using the same transportation equipment. But when a polymer solution is also flowing in the fluid transportation system, the degradation which have a very close relation with the phenomena of the drag reduction occurs necessarily. When adding polymer to reduce the drag in two phase flow system, It is impossible to find some studies. This study is focussing on a searching examination for the experimental study considering the mechanical degradation in the closed tow phase system to find out the conditions which could improve the pump capacity.
