Objective: To study the effects of gait training with additional weight and gait training with non-additional weight on balance ability and gait ability in patients with chronic stroke through comparative analysis. Design: Randomized controlled trials. Methods: The subjects were divided randomly into two groups: additional weight group (AWG, n=12), and non-additional weight group (NAWG, n=10). Both groups received general physical therapy for 30 min in 1 session, 5 sessions per week during 6 months. The AWG practiced gait training with additional weight of 0.1 and 0.5 kg for 20 min a day, 3 days per week for 6 months and the NAWG practiced gait training with non-additional weight for 20 min a day, 3 days per week for 6 months. Patients in both groups were instructed to walk as fast as they could along a 35 m long track (straight for 20 m and curved for 15 m). Patients walked with their hemiplegic side on the inside of the track while a physical therapist followed along to instruct patients to maintain a straight posture. Balance ability was tested with the Functional Reach Test, the Timed Up and Go test, and the Berg Balance Scale, and gait ability was tested with GAITRite. The results of balance and gait ability were analyzed before and after interventions. Results: A significant increase in FRT, TUG, BBS was seen in both groups after intervention (p<0.05). A significant increase in gait ability was seen in the AWG after intervention (p<0.05). For balance and gait ability, the results from the AWG was significantly improved compared with the NAWG (p<0.05). Conclusions: Gait training with additional weight improves balance ability and gait ability in stroke patients, this gait training method is effective and suitable for stroke patients to increase the ability of functional performance.

PURPOSE: This study is to examine the effects of different types of tasks on gait functions of chronic stroke patients when different types of dual tasks were applied while the patients were implementing practical and continuous circuit tasks using their upper and lower extremities circulating many workbenches. METHODS: Forty-four chronic stroke patients were divided into a dual motor circuit task training group, a dual cognitive circuit task training group and a simple task training group. Before training, all the patients were identically encouraged to receive conservative physical therapy for 30 minutes by a physical therapist were thereafter made to train for 30 minutes, five times a week for a total of eight weeks with individual additional tasks. The dual motor circuit task training consisted of continuous circuit training motor tasks and additional motor tasks and the dual cognitive circuit task training consisted of tasks combining the same circuit training motor tasks and additional cognitive tasks. The simple task training consisted of natural walks on a flat terrain to the front, rear and lateral sides of the terrain. Changes in functional gait abilities made through the training were evaluated using GAITRite. SPSS Win 12.0 was used for the data analysis. RESULTS: As for the gait variables that showed significant differences in comparison between the groups over the training period, the dual motor circuit task training group showed more significant differences than the dual cognitive circuit task training group and the simple task training group at 4 weeks and 8 weeks of training(p<.05). CONCLUSION: Therefore, it could be seen that the practical and continuous dual circuit task training was more effective than simple task training on gait. In comparison between the types of dual tasks, the dual motor circuit task training group showed more effects than the dual cognitive circuit task training group.

Purpose : This study is to examine the effects of different task-related circuit training by types of tasks on the depression and quality of life in stroke patients. Method : Forty-four chronic stroke patients were divided into a dual motor circuit task training group, a dual cognitive circuit task training group and a simple task training group. Over the course of eight weeks, before training, all the patients were identically encouraged to receive conservative physical therapy for 30 minutes, five times a week for a total of eight weeks with individual additional tasks. The dual motor circuit tasks training consisted of continuous circuit training motor tasks and additional motor tasks and the dual cognitive circuit task training consisted of tasks combining the same circuit training motor tasks and additional cognitive tasks. The simple task training consisted of natural walks on a flat terrain to the front, rear and lateral sides of the terrain. Result : As for the Stroke-Specific Quality of Life(SS-QOL) that showed significant diffe rences in comparison between the groups over the training period, the dual motor circuit task training group showed statistically significant differences in both different types of tasks at 8 weeks(p<.05). The score of Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS) decreased in three groups, in the HADS showed significant changes over the training time in the three training groups(p<.05). Conclusion : It could be seen that the practical and continuous dual circuit task training was more effective than simple task training on quality of life. In comparison between the types of dual tasks, the dual motor circuit task training group showed more effects than the dual cognitive circuit task training group. This researcher hopes that the results of this study will be actively applied as rehabilitation methods for chronic stroke patients.
EEG-based brain-computer interfaces has focused on explicitly expressed intentions to assist physically impaired patients. For EEG-based-computer interfaces to function effectively, it should be able to understand users' implicit information. Since it is hard to gather EEG signals of human brains, we do not have enough training data which are essential for proper classification performance of implicit intention. In this paper, we improve the subject independent classification of implicit intention through the generation of additional training data. In the first stage, we perform the PCA (principal component analysis) of training data in a bid to remove redundant components in the components within the input data. After the dimension reduction by PCA, we train ICA (independent component analysis) network whose outputs are statistically independent. We can get additional training data by adding Gaussian noises to ICA outputs and projecting them to input data domain. Through simulations with EEG data provided by CNSL, KAIST, we improve the classification performance from 65.05% to 66.69% with Gamma components. The proposed sample generation method can be applied to any machine learning problem with fewer samples.

Results: Groups with additional SP trainings (with and without feedback) showed a significantly higher normalized gain score than no training group (p<0.05). Conclusions: The SP training (with/without feedback) is a beneficial learning tool for history taking to students in audiology major.

The vibration signal can give an indication of the condition of rotating machinery, highlighting potential faults such as unbalance, misalignment and bearing defects. The features in the vibration signal provide an important source of information for the faults diagnosis of rotating machinery. When additional training data become available after the initial training is completed, the conventional neural networks (NNs) must be retrained by applying total data including additional training data. This paper proposes the fault diagnostics algorithm using the ART-Kohonen network which does not destroy the initial training and can adapt additional training data that is suitable for the classification of machine condition. The results of the experiments confirm that the proposed algorithm performs better than other NNs as the self-organizing feature maps (SOFM) , learning vector quantization (LYQ) and radial basis function (RBF) NNs with respect to classification quality. The classification success rate for the ART-Kohonen network was 94 o/o and for the SOFM, LYQ and RBF network were 93 %, 93 % and 89 % respectively.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of weight shift training with electrical sensory simulation feedback on quiet standing balance in hemiplegic stroke patients. METHODS: 30 stroke patients were equally allocated at random to an experimental group or a control group. Patients in both two groups underwent comprehensive rehabilitation physical therapy for 30 minutes per day for 5 days per week for 4 weeks. Members of the experimental group received additional weight shift training with electrical sensory simulation feedback was conducted for 15 minutes after 30 minute sessions, whereas members of the control group underwent additional leftward/rightward weight shift training by themselves after 30 minutes per day for four weeks. COP (center of pressure) path lengths, COP velocities, and foot forces were measured before and immediately after the 4-week training period in both groups and results were compared. RESULTS: COP path lengths significantly decreased by 3% after training in the experimental group and this was significantly greater than that observed in the control group (p<0.05). In both groups, foot forces of affected sides showed significant increases after intervention, whereas foot forces of unaffected sides showed significant decreases (p<0.05). No significant difference was observed between the two groups with respect to these changes. CONCLUSION: Weight shift training using electrical sensory simulation feedback has a positive effect on quiet standing balance in hemiplegic stroke.
Objective: The purpose of this study was determine the effect of Balance Trainer training with Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) on spasticity and balance in persons with chronic stroke. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: A total of 30 subjects with hemiparetic stroke were recruited and randomly divided into the Balance Trainer training with TENS group (n=15) and Balance Trainer training with placebo TENS group (n=15). The Balance Trainer training with TENS group practiced additional Balance Trainer training with TENS for 30 minutes a day, 5 days per a week during 4 weeks and the Balance Trainer training with placebo TENS group practiced additional Balance Trainer training with placebo TENS for the same period. Spasticity and balance were assessed by ability (static balance, dynamic balance) and were measured before and after the 4-week programs. Results: The result of spasticity and dynamic balance were improved significantly in both groups (p<0.05). The Balance Trainer training with TENS group showed significantly greater improvement in spasticity of the gastrocnemius & dynamic balance, compared to the Balance Trainer training with placebo TENS group (p<0.05). The Balance trainer training with TENS group showed a significant improvement in static balance, especially during the eye-closed condition (p<0.05). Conclusions: The Balance Trainer training with TENS was effective in improving spasticity and balance in subjects with chronic stroke. Based on these results, it is suggested that Balance Trainer training with TENS could clinically be used more actively in conjunction with conventional physical therapy.
Purpose: The goal of this study was to investigate the effect of balance and gait ability through two motor dual task training in chronic stroke subjects. Methods: A group of twenty-five subjects who were six months post stroke participated in this study, where they were designated into pretest-posttest control The subjects were randomly allocated into two groups: experimental (n=13) and control (n=12). Both groups received physical therapy for 5 session 30 minutes per week during 6 weeks. Experimental group practiced additional two motor dual task training programs for thirty minutes a day, three days a week during six weeks. Evaluation of results was obtained through analyzing static balance, dynamic balance and gait function. Results: There was significant improvement among the group that practiced the additional two motor dual task training in that the postural sway area with open eye and close eye on the foam surface, the dynamic balance (p<0.05), and the gait function (p<0.05). Conclusion: Two motor dual task training improved static balance on the foam, dynamic balance, gait function. These results suggest that two motor dual task training is a feasible and suitable treatment for individuals with chronic stroke.
