Since the most exclusive machines of the modern industries which require the nano precision rates are evolved from the machine tools, the design of the stable machine tool structure is very critical. Exclusive machines for the modern industries such as semiconductor, solar cell and LED have surface machining processes which are similar to the face cutting and grinding of conventional machine tools. This study was initiated to stabilize a milling machine structure and further to help design those exclusive machines which have similar machining mechanisms. The vibrations inherent to the machine tool structures hurt the precision machining as well as damage the longevity of the structures. There have been numerous researches in order to suppress the vibrations of machine tool structures using the extra modules such as actuators and dampers. In this paper, the dynamic properties are analyzed to obtain the natural frequencies and mode shapes of a machine tool structure which reflect the main reasons of the biggest vibrations under the given operating conditions. And the feasibility of improving the stability of the structure without using any additional apparatus has been investigated with minor design changes. The result of the study shows that simple changes based on proper system identification can considerably improve the stability of the machine tool structure.
This paper is on a new cutting force model which includes the force caused by unbalance. The cutting under the different additional masses are measured with the spindle speed changed. The model is justified through correlation between simulation and experimental result.
Net shape forging technologies give many effects into the costs and qualities for the finished products. So, the studies to reduce the additional machining amount are very important in forging industry. Specially, there are two main topics in cold forging industry, such as, tool life and precision forging. In this study, new forging technique was proposed to eliminate the machining process for fixing up the length and improve the lead accuracy of gear. The luck-up hub is manufactured through many processes, such as upsetting, piercing and direct extrusion. The gear is formed in direct extrusion process; however, lead accuracy of the gear is over allowance limit. Therefore, the additional sizing process must be added. In this study, process design for closed-die forging of a lock-up hub used for a component of automobile transmission was made using three-dimensional finite element simulations, and the strain distributions and velocity distributions are investigated through the post processor. The rigid-plastic finite-element method for back pressure forging has been used in order to reduce development time and die cost. Using the FEM simulation, we found the optimum value of back pressure. The prototypes of lock-up hub parts were forged into the net-shape. In the experiment, lead precision of tooth are measured by the CCMM(Contact Coordinate Measuring Machine). The dimensional accuracy of forged part was improved up to the 40% when back press was applied.
The outer race of a constant velocity (CV) joint having six inner ball grooves has traditionally been manufactured by multi-stage warm forging, which includes forward extrusion, upsetting, backward extrusions, necking, ironing and sizing, and machining. In the current study, a multi-stage cold forging process is examined and an assessment for replacing and modifying the conventional multi-stage warm forging is made. The proposed procedure is simplified to the backward extrusion of the conventional process, and the sizing and necking are combined into a single sizing-necking step. Thus, the forging surface of the six ball grooves can be obtained without additional machining. To verify the suitability of the proposed process, a 3-dimensional numerical simulation on each operation was performed. The forging loads were also predicted. In addition, a structural integrity evaluation for the tools was carried out. Based on the results, it is shown that the dimensional requirements of the outer race can be well met.
Laser Material Processing has been replaced the conventional machining systems - cutting, drilling, welding and surface modification and so on. Especially, LTH(Laser Transformation Hardening) process is one branch of the laser surface modification process. Conventionally, some techniques like a gas carburizing and nitriding as well as induction and torch heating have been used to harden the carbon steels. But these methods not only request post-machining resulted from a deformation but also have complex processing procedures. Besides, LTH process has some merits as : 1. It is easy to control the case depth because of output(laser power) adjustability. 2. It is able to harden the localized and complicated a.ea and minimize a deformation due to a unique property of a localized heat source. 3. An additional cooling medium is not required due to self quenching. 4. A prominent hardening results can be obtained. This study is related to the surface hardening of the rod-shaped carbon steel applied to the lathe based complex processing mechanism, a basic behavior of surface hardening, hardness distribution and structural characteristics in the hardened zone.
The multi-point forming (MPF) process for three-dimensional curved sheet metal has been developed as an alternative to the conventional die forming process since MPF allows the manufacturing of various shapes using one die set and reduce the cost of production. However, the MPF process cannot provide high quality products yet due to defects occurring in the sheet such as dimples and wrinkles. It can also lead to economic loss because of long tool setup time and additional machining required outside of the sheet formed area. In this study, a new sheet metal forming method, called flexible roll forming (FRF), is proposed to solve the problems of existing processes for three-dimensional curved sheet metal. This progressive process utilizes adjusting rods, as well as upper and lower flexible rollers as forming tools. In contrast with the existing processes, FRF can reduce the additional production costs because of the possible blank size for the part longitudinal direction, which is unrestricted. In this research, methods and procedures of the flexible roll forming technology are described. Numerical forming simulations of representative three-dimensional curved sheet products are also carried out to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology.

Although conventional contour parallel tool paths obtained from geometric information have successfully been used to produce desired shapes, they seldom consider physical process concerns such as cutting forces and chatter. In this paper, we introduce an optimized contour parallel path that maintains a constant material removal rate at all times. The optimized tool path is based on a conventional contour parallel tool path. Additional tool path segments are appended to the basic path to achieve constant cutting forces and to avoid chatter vibrations over the entire machining area. The algorithm was implemented for two-dimensional contiguous end milling operations with flat end mills, and cutting tests were conducted to verify the performance of the proposed method.
In this paper, the accurate end position control method of ultraprecision machine tool post using piezoelectric material as an micro positonong devics is presented. This method employs the classical PID feedback and uses an additional notch filter which eliminates the resonance characteristics of controlled plant. And the simple predictor is added to make use of the future value of desired input for better tracking performance. To show the feasibilty of proposed method, the PC-based experimental apparacy can be obtained. Using method, Al specimen of diameter 100mm was cut under practical machining condition to test the practicability of proposed method.
In the multi-stage former, a manufacture of hexagonal fitting nut was generated in a defective products about 70∼80% in the industry field. Products generated in defects manufactured to be a machining about 60%. Additional process increased a product cost and decreased a product rate. Therefore, it is important to predict and design a preform reducing defective products in the early stage of process design. So in the study Defects for manufacturing hexagonal fitting nut verified a cause through the finite element simulation. To reduce a defective generation. a preform designed and a designed preform verified through the finite element simulation. In conclusion, a generated defects when a hexagonal fitting nut manufactured should reduce if a round dimension of preform reduced and a part of opposition angle distributed in plenty a volume.
Aluminum extruded profiles have been mostly used only a few automotive parts until now, such as roof rail, sunroof frame and bumper beams. However, Aluminum Extru-form technology, which was recently developed by foreign advanced manufacturer, made it possible to apply the aluminum extruded profiles to suspension parts of passenger and RV cars. It could be obtained by optimized billet casting, extrusion and stretch bending technology. It was possible to have the excellent weight reduction and the competitive price comparing with conventional process of aluminum for automotive parts. Combining additional process technology such as machining and joining, the application can be extended to various automotive parts. We have developed high strength aluminum alloy and fabricated subframe and suspension arm by extruforming process.
