Modern livestock production facilities face both challenges and opportunities with respect to sustainable manure management practices. Nutrient recycling is constrained by the size of modern livestock operations, the low nutrient density of liquid manures, and the spatial and temporal variability of manure nutrient concentrations. These constraints can and must be addressed or farmers will be increasingly drawn to nutrient wasting strategies such as anaerobic lagoons, wetlands, and other systems designed to treat and discharge nutrients to the environment. Intentional discharge of nutrients is difficult to justify in a sustainable agricultural production system, since replacing those nutrients through chemical fertilization requires considerable expenditure of energy. In contrast, there are several currently viable technologies which provide the homogenization and stabilization needed to successfully compete against chemical fertilizers, including composting, pelletization, and anaerobic digestion. Some of these technologies, particularly anaerobic digestion and composting, also open up increased opportunities to market the energy and nutrients in manure to non-agricultural uses. Future advances in biotechnology are likely to demonstrate additional options to transform manure into fuels, chemicals, and other non-agricultural products.

In designing assembly lines, it is required that the lines should not only meet the demand of the product, but also minimize the assembly cost associated with the line. For such a purpose, numerous research efforts have been made on either the assembly sequence generation or the assembly line balancing. However, the works dealing with both the research problems have been seldom reported in literature. When assembly sequences are generated without consideration of line balancing, additional cost may be incurred, because the sequences may not guarantee the minimum number of workstations. Therefore, it is essential to consider line balancing in the generation of cost-effective assembly sequences. To incorporate the two research problems into one, this paper treats a single-model and deterministic (SMD) assembly line balancing (ALB) problem, and proposes a new method for generating line-balanced robotic assembly sequences by using a simulated annealing. In this method, an energy function is derived in consideration of the satisfaction of assembly constraints, and the minimization of both the assembly cost and the idle time. Then, the energy function is iteratively minimized and occasionally perturbed by the simulated annealing. When no further change in energy occurs, an assembly sequence with consideration of line balancing is finally found. To show the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, a case study for an electrical relay is presented.
A Second Harmonic Generation Frequency Resolved Optical Gating(SHG FROG) system was developed. Its performance test shows that it is capable of accurately measuring the temporal evolution of the electric field, both amplitude and phase, of femtosecond light pulses. For the retrieval of the temporal evolution of light pulses from their spectrograms obtained by using the FROG system, Principal Components Generalized Projection(PCGP) algorithm is used and in addition we used additional constraints of second-harmonic spectrum, marginals in frequency and time-delay of the spectrogram. Such modification of the software brings about significant improvement in speed and stability of the pulse retrieval process.

It has been noted that the low frequency absorption coefficient of a porous sample placed in a standing wave tube is affected by the nature of the sample's edge constraint. The edge constraint has the effect of stiffening the solid phase of the sample, which itself can be strongly coupled to the material's fluid phase, and hence the incident sound field, by viscous means at low frequencies. In recent work it has also been shown that such a circumferential constraint causes the low frequency transmission loss of a layer of fibrous material to approach a finite low frequency limit that is proportional to the flow resistance of the layer and which is substantially higher than that of an unconstrained sample of the same material. However, it was also found that the benefit of the circumferential edge constraint was reduced in a transitional frequency range by a shearing resonance of the sample. Here it will be shown that the effect of that resonance can be mitigated or eliminated by adding additional axial and radial constraints running through the sample. It will also be shown that the constraint effect can be modeled closely by using a finite element procedure based on the Biot poroelastic theory. Implications for low frequency barrier design are also discussed.

This paper proposes a double sliding surfaces based on a sliding mode control for a tracking control of nonholonomic mobile robots in the Cartesian coordinates. In order to remove sliding surface constraints, we design the additional sliding surface for the heading angle with respect to the newly defined coordinates. Then, we define the switching law based on the posture error to combine the designed sliding surface with the previous one. By using the double sliding surfaces and the switching law, we obtain the control law for arbitrary trajectories. It is proved that the position tracking error and the heading direction error asymptotically converge to zero, respectively, with the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, through computer simulations, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed control system.
Recent changes to ubiquitous computing requires more natural human-computer(HCI) interfaces that provide high information accessibility. Hand-gesture, i.e., gestures performed by one 'or two hands, is emerging as a viable technology to complement or replace conventional HCI technology. This paper deals with hand-posture recognition. Hand-posture database construction is important in hand-posture recognition. Human hand is composed of 27 bones and the movement of each joint is modeled by 23 degrees of freedom. Even for the same hand-posture,. grabbed images may differ depending on user's characteristic and relative position between the hand and cameras. To solve the difficulty in defining hand-postures and construct database effective in size, we present a method using a 3D hand model. Hand joint angles for each hand-posture and corresponding silhouette images from many viewpoints by projecting the model into image planes are used to construct the ?database. The proposed method does not require additional equations to define movement constraints of each joint. Also using the method, it is easy to get images of one hand-posture from many vi.ewpoints and distances. Hence it is possible to construct database more precisely and concretely. The validity of the method is evaluated by applying it to the hand-posture recognition system.
According to flying hours, aircraft engines require regular overhaul for preventive maintenance. Because of hostile defense environment of Republic of Korea, the aircraft of republic of Korea Air Force(ROKAF) have been operated at the maximum level of availability and have similar overhaul schedule in several months. The concentration of overhaul schedule in a short period demands additional spare engines far exceeding the spare engines for corrective maintenance. If ROKAF decides to purchase extra engines for the preventive maintenance, the extra engines will be used only for the preventive maintenance and will be excess inventory for the most of aircraft life ccle. Also, the procurement of extra engines is significant investment for ROKAF. To help ROKAF schedule the preventive maintenance without significant spending, this study develops a dynamic programming model that is solvable using an integer programming algorithm. The model provides the number of engines that should be overhauled for a month for multiple periods under given constraints. ROKAF actually used this model to solve a T-59 engine overhaul problem and saved about three billion won at one time. ROKAF plans to use this model continuously for T-59 and other weapon systems. Thus, saving for long term will be significant to ROKAF. Finally, with minor modification, this model can be applied to deciding the minimum number of spare engines for preventive maintenance.

The present study provides some extensions over a recent work in Won (2011) which investigates properties of the static newsvendor problem under a schedule involving progressive multiple discounts under the assumption that demand is given exogenously. Khouja (1995, 1996) formulated the extended versions over the classical newsvendor model with various discount policies including all-units discount and/or multiple discounts and found that the extended newsvendor models with discount schedules yield higher optimal expected profits than the classical newsvendor model with no-discounts. In this study, we establish a robust conjecture as a stronger statement than Khouja's findings with regard to the general relationship among the expected profits of newsvendor models in the sense that the conjecture holds for every order quantity as well as the optimal order quantity. The conjecture encourages the newsvendor facing quantity discounts to safely implement her own discounts policy to customer or accept quantity discounts offered by the supplier even if the optimal order quantity cannot be ordered due to additional restrictions such as budget or warehouse capacity constraints because the newsvendor models with quantity discounts always yield higher expected profit than the classic newsvendor model without quantity discounts regardless of the order quantity. Results from wide experiments with various probability distributions of demand strongly support our conjecture.
The present study compares flow fields reconstructed by data assimilation method with different combinations of parameters. As a data assimilation method, Vortex-in-Cell-sharp (VIC#), which supplements additional constraints and multigrid approximation to Vortex-in-Cell-plus (VIC+), is used to reconstruct flow fields from scattered particle tracks. Two parameters, standard deviation of Gaussian radial basis function (RBF) and grid spacing, are mainly tested using artificial data sets which contain few particle tracks. Consequent flow fields are analyzed in terms of flow structure sizes. It is demonstrated that sizes of the flow structures are proportional to an actual scale of the standard deviation of RBF. It implies that a combination of larger grid spacing and smaller standard deviation which preserves the actual standard deviation is able to save computational resources in case of a low track density. In addition, a simple comparison using an experimental data filled with dense particle tracks is conducted.
There have been many academic researches on the aerodynamic design of wind turbine based on blade element method (BEM) and momentum theory (MT, or actuating disk theory). However, in the real world, the turbine blade design requires many additional constraints more than theoretical analysis. The standard procedure is studied in the present paper to design new blades for the wind turbine system ranged from the small size from 1 to 10 kW. From the experience of full design of a 10 kW blade, the authors tried to set up a standard procedure for the aerodynamic design based on IEC 61400-2. Wind-turbine scale, rotating speed, and geometrical chord/twist distribution at the segmented span positions are calculated with a suitable BEM/MT code, and the geometrical shape of tip and root should be modified after considering various parameters: wing-tip vortex, aerodynamic noise, turbine efficiency, structural safety, convenience of fabrication, and even economic factor likes price, etc. The evaluated data is passed to the next procedure of structural design, but some of them should still be corresponded with each other: the fluid-structure interaction is one of those problems not yet solved, for example. Consequently, the design procedure of small wind-turbine blades is set up for the mass production of commercial products in this research.
