  • Fermentation and morphological characteristics of rice bread baked with gums, lipids, and glutens added dough were investigated to establish the standard recipe for rice bread processing. All gum-type additives 1ed to successful formation of rice bread. Hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose among tested gums showed the best volume expansion and successful formation of rice bread. Addition of vegetable oils gave better effect on increasing the specific loaf volume and tenderness of rice bread than addition of the solid-type lipids such as margarin and lard during rice bread processing. Dry heating during baking of the rice bread gave more desirable effect on specific gravity of rice bread than wet heating. High-amylose rices such as Suweonjo, AC 27, and IR 44 showed better formation of rice bread in the case of adding 3% hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose, while Suweon 230 and Pusa-33-30 showed slightly better formation of rice bread in the case of adding the gluten and strong hard flour. The glutinous rice Hangangchalbyeo failed to the formation of rice bread in both cases of adding 3% hydroxypropyl-methyl-cellulose and the gluten and hard flour.

  • This study consists of an experimental investigation of the reduction of the second-order roll motion of a semi-submersible platform in head sea conditions by adding hull damping. The second-order heave drift force and roll drift moment are known to be the main triggers that induce the list angle (Hong et al., 2010). Hong et al. (2013) used numerical calculations to show the possibility of reducing the list angle by changing the pontoon shape and adding a damping device on the hull. One of their findings was that the reduction in the list angle due to the increase in pontoon surface damping was significant. A series of model tests were carried out with a 1:50 scaled model of semi-submersible at the KRISO wave basin. The experiments indicated that adding damping on the hull surface effectively suppressed the list angle.

  • The effects of the water extracts from thyme(TM) and tarragon(TG) on shelf-life and quality of kimchi were investigated by measuring the changes in pH, acidity, number of total microorganisms, number of Lactobacillii and Leuconostoc during fermentation at 1$0^{\circ}C$, and were tested for antimicrobial activities against Lactobacillus plantarum and Leuconostoc mesenteroides. TM and TG were extracted with water, ethyl ether, ethyl acetate and ethanol. Water, ethyl ether, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of TM showed antimicrobial activities against Lactobacillus plantarum and did not observed against Leuconostoc mesenteroides. On the other hand, water, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts of TG showed antimicrobial activities against Leuconostoc mesenteroides and did not observed against Lactobacillus plantarum. The decrease of pH and the increase of acidity showed lower in kimchi prepared by adding water extracts from TM than in products from TG. The number of total microorganisms were also detected less in the kimchi prepared by adding water extracts from TM. And, the properties of barkless of kimchi measured instrumentally were higher for kimchi prepared by adding water extracts from TM, also maintaining good crispness. The optimal addition amounts of both TM and TG for good overall and spicy taste of kimchi were 0.03%. The results suggested the possible use of the extracts of TM and TG can be successfully used for the quality and extension of shelf-life of kimchi.

  • Because of its effectiveness for the PD(partial discharge) pattern recognition, PSA(Pulse Sequence Analysis) has been considered as a new analytic method instead of conventional PRPDA(Phase Resolved Partial Discharge Analysis). However, PSA has a big problem that can misanalyze patterns in case of data missing resulting from poor sensitivity because it analyses the correlation between sequential pulses, which leads to hesitate to apply it to on-site. Therefore, in this paper, the problems of PSA such as data missing and noise adding cases were investigated. For the purpose, PD data obtained from various defects including noise adding data were used and analysed, The result showed that both cases can cause fatal errors in recognizing PD patterns. In case of the data missing, the error depends on the kinds of defect and the degree of degradation. Also, it could be noticed that the error due to adding noises was larger than that due to some data missing.

  • This study was to examine the effects of garment types on thermal insulation using a thermal manikin. cotton polyester wool silk and rayon were selected as outer wears like a blouse a skirt slacks and one-piece for this study Acetate was chosen as a lining. Brief and upper innerwear with long sleeves(cotton) were also chosen as the innerwear. The results were as follows: 1. The thermal insulation of the garment of single layer was in proportion to the covering area of garment in all types of clothing. 2. On adding the innerwear or the lining or both the thermal insulation of the each garment of single layer were showed a different trends by garment types. The thermal manikin insulations of one-piece dress adding the innerwear was higher than those of blouse-skirt suits. The thermal insulation of one-piece dress adding the innerwear and lining was lower than those of blouse-skirt suits. 3. The increasing rates of thermal insulation of multi-layered garments had different value by garment types but garment made of rayon and silk were showed very high increasing rates of thermal insulation. 4. The increasing rates of the thermal insulation of one-piece dress added the lining the innerwear or both except polyester showed the highest value and then blouse-slacks suits' turn came ound Blouse-skirt suits had the lowest the increasing rates of thermal insualition value.

  • This work was conducted to investigate on the effect of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin viscosity on plywood adhesion. The viscosity of UF resin was controlled either by adjusting the condensation reaction during its synthesis to obtain different target viscosities (100, 200 and 300 mPa.s) at two levels of formaldehyde/urea (F/U) mole ratios (1.0 and 1.2) or by adding different amounts (10, 20 and 30%) of wheat flour into the resins for the manufacture of plywood. When the viscosity of UF resin increased by the condensation reaction, the adhesion strength of plywood bonded with UF resin of 1.2 F/U mole ratio consistently increased, while those bonded with the 1.0 F/U mole ratio resin slightly decreased, suggesting a difference in the adhesion in plywood. However, the adhesion strength of plywood decreased as the viscosity increased by adding wheat flour, regardless of F/U mole ratio. The manipulation of UF resin viscosity by adjusting the condensation reaction was much more efficient than by adding wheat flour in improving the adhesion performance of plywood. These results indicated that a way of controlling the viscosity of UF resin adhesives has a great influence to their adhesion in plywood.

  • The biological activities of both ethanol and water extracts from the fruiting body of E. applanata and E. applanata mycelium and the three fractions of ethanol extracts from E. applanata were compared. 91% of MCF7 cell growth was inhibited by adding 0.5 g/l of water extracts of E. applanata and 81% of MCF7 cell growth was inhibited by adding 0.5 g/l of diethyl ether and chloroform fractions. It was also showed that above 60% of Hep3B cell growth was inhibited by adding all samples including the fractions. The ethanol extracts of E. applanata mycelium showed 33.3% of cytotoxicity on normal liver cell, WRL68 in adding 0.5 g/l of the samples and 40% in adding 0.5 g/l of chloroform fractions. The result of anti-mutagenicity of all extracts and fractions including ethanol extracts of Phelinus linteus were showed that diethyl ether fractions were most effective than any other samples. Hypoglycemic activities of diethyl ether and chloroform fractions were the most effective which scores were above 75%. The enhancement of glutathione-S-transferase activity was increased above 2.3 times by adding 1.0 g/l ethanol extracts of E. applanata and diethyl ether, chloroform fractions. It can be concluded that both biological activities of the fruiting body and mycelium of E. applanata were almost equivalent.
