  • This study aims to forecast of the number of smart phone addicted youths and to evaluate the effect of rehabilitation programs. A system dynamics model is developed to describe the processes of addiction and transits between phases as well as the diffusion of smart phones. The youths are grouped into non users, general users, potential risky users, and high risky users. The model utilizes the population distributions over ages for the next 30 years forecasted by Korean Government. The number of youths decreases for the next decade or so, and the number of youths who owns smart phone will reach maximum at 2017. As for the rehabilitation programs, the model includes the preventive education for general users, counseling for potential risky users, and professional therapy for high risky users. The preventive education restricts the transit from general users to potential risky users. Counseling increases the transit from potential risky users to general users while it decreases the transit to high risky users. Professional therapy improves transit to potential risky users and to general users. Although the model cannot be validated the accuracy owing to the lack of data, it describes these transit within the reasonable ranges and can be used to study the allocation of the limited resources to maximize the outcome.

  • This study is a descriptive research study which attempts to determine the effects of self-efficacy, self-esteem, loneliness, stress, stress coping, and use expectancy on the smartphone addiction of university students based on the GIA model. Data was accumulated by means of questionnaire surveys from December 2015 to January 2016, which targeted 224 college students attending universities within Seoul and analyzed by descriptive statistical analysis, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis using SPSS 21.0. The average smartphone addiction score was $2.5{\pm}0.8$ (1.2-4.9) and 125 students were in the normal category (55 %), 90 in the danger category (40.2%), and 9 in the addiction category (4%). The correlation analysis showed that loneliness and stress had positive correlations with use expectancy, while self-esteem had a negative correlation. Loneliness, stress, use expectancy, and self-esteem proved to be the major factors affecting smartphone addiction and it was concluded that the development and application of programs which strengthen self-esteem are necessary. This study contributed to the research application and availability of the GIA model by analyzing the factors affecting smartphone addiction based on the GIA model.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine effects of an empowerment education program (EEP) on internet games addiction, empowerment, and stress in middle school students. Methods: The EEP used in this study was based on the Freire' Empowerment Education Model. The research design of this study was a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design for 48 middle school students, who were conveniently assigned to an experimental group or a control group. The data were collected from May 29 to June 19, 2005. Data were analyzed using SPSS/PC program with frequencies, $\chi^2$-test, Fisher exact test, t-test, mean, standard deviation and ANCOVA. Results: 1) The first hypothesis that, "the experimental group would have higher empowerment scores than the control group. "was supported. 2) The second hypothesis that, "the experimental group would have lower internet games addiction scores than the control group."was supported. 3) The third hypothesis that, "the experimental group would have lower stress scores than the control group." was supported. Conclusion: We suggest, therefore, that the EEP should be used with adolescent to help them control their stress, internet games addiction and to increase their empowerment.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among smartphone addiction, communication ability, loneliness, and interpersonal relationships in university students in Korea. Between 15 and 31 May 2016, 263 subjects completed a questionnaire consisting of questions on smartphone addiction, communication ability, loneliness, and health of interpersonal relationships. Among smartphone addiction questions there were significant differences between genders (t = 2.350, p = 0.019) and educational grade (F = 3.313, p = 0.021). With regard to human relationship health, the scores for males were significantly higher than those for females (t = 2.337, p = 0.020). The smartphone addiction and human relationship health results were negatively correlated (r = -0.157, p = 0.011). In contrast, communication ability and human relationship health results were positively correlated (r = 0.581, p < 0.001). However, loneliness and human relationship health were not significantly correlated. The final multiple regression model explaining human relationship health included smartphone addiction (t = 2.753, p = 0.006), communication ability (t = 11.714, p < 0.001), and motivation for smartphone purchase (t = 2.125, p = 0.035) as independent factors. The final model explained 36.6% of the total variance. In order to improve university students' human relationship health, solutions for smartphone addiction and low communication skills are required. This results of this study can be used as a basis on which to develop a human relationship health intervention program.

  • This study was conducted to propose anti-stigma strategies by verifying the social stigma on behavioral addiction under the premise that social stigma is a main obstacle to the treatment of addiction. A research model was constructed by applying the attribution affection theory and the modified attribution affection theory, which are very useful for explaining emotional and behavioral responses to the persons with mental illness. In other words, when attributing the causes of behavioral addiction to the personally controllable things such as personality, will and lifestyle, social distance can be increased by the mediate of anger. However, when attributing the causes of behavioral addiction to biological factors that can not be controlled by an individual, there can exist two pathway, one is the arising of helping behaviors by the mediate of sympathy (the attribution affection theory), and the other is the aggravation in the social distance due to rising fear (the modified attribution affection theory). In order to verify the research model, 383 adult subjects mainly in South Gyeongsang Province were randomly presented with the vignettes of gambling addiction and internet game addiction, and asked about the causes of the problems and their emotional, prejudicial, and behavioral responses to them. As a result, all pathway had statistically significant predictive effect. Therefore, in the case of attributing to personal causes, social distance increased by the mediate of anger. In the case of attributing to biological causes, both pathway had significant predictive effect, but the indirect effect of the pathway predictive of the helping behavior by the mediate of sympathy was greater. Researchers suggested that anti-stigma strategies, which emphasize that behavioral addiction is a mental health problem requiring treatment, are necessary.
