The participants in this study included 338 elementary students, 371 junior high students, and 342 high school students of Kyunggi province. They were categorized into 3 groups by their aptitude to Internet addiction: serious addicts, potential addicts, and non-addicts. According to the results, older students showed higher tendency toward Internet addiction, and more insecure attachment to their parents. More than 20% of participants were disposed to addiction to the Internet, indicating that immediate intervention should be applied. Significant variables to explain students' Internet addiction were differentiated along their developmental levels. Attachment to parents was related to the Internet addiction of elementary and junior high students, while self control was more critical for high school students' addiction.

  • Substance addiction is a chronically relapsing disorder that has been characterized by a vicious cycle composed of intoxication, craving/anticipation, withdrawal, and response inhibition/bingeing. Here we summarize the findings from neuroimaging studies in addiction according to these behavioral components and suggest the integrated neurobiological model of drug addiction and related brain correlates. The roles of various prefrontal regions, thalamus, memory circuit, anterior cingulated, and insula were also suggested in addition to those of classical mesolimbic dopaminergic system and its responsivity. Limited studies of behavioral addiction demonstrated a similarity with substance addiction on the neurobiological basis. Based on the current understanding of neurobiology of addiction, further researches on interactions of behavioral components and their brain correlates, behavioral addiction, and therapeutic applications will be desired.

  • The aim of this study was to draw some suggestions for Internet Policy by using empirical analyses of key factors in Internet addiction in youths. Internet addiction in youths is perceived as a current and significant issue throughout the world. For the purpose of this study, factors that have influence on the Internet addiction of the youth have been explored and analysed empirically of its hypothetical relationships by using the SEM(structural equation modelling). As a result, a few key factors that suggest a strong relationship to Internet addiction in youths have been drawn: subjects' personality, accessibility to the Internet, psychology and communication factor. Particularly accessibility to the Internet, and specifically the duration of time spent online causes the phenomenon of the Internet addiction. This study shows, however, the subjects' personality and communication factor have the most significant causal relationship to Internet addiction. In other word, the Internet addiction has been changing with the various factors including the factors drawn in this study, which are subjects' personality, accessibility to the Internet, psychology and communication factor. Therefore, Internet addiction should not be merely treated as the isolated problem of the Internet itself; rather it should be understood as various dimensions of society, economy, culture etc. Furthermore, some alternatives to deal with the Internet addiction should be found in various approaches.
