  • This paper proposes the new adaptive protection algorithm for inverse-time overcurrent relays (OCRs) to ensure their proper operating time and protective coordination. The application of the proposed algorithm requires digital protection relays with microcontroller and memory. The operating parameters of digital OCRs are adjusted based on the available data whenever system conditions (system with distributed generation (DG)) vary. Moreover, it can reduce the calculation time required to determine the operating parameters for achieving its purpose. To verify its effectiveness, several case studies are performed in time-domain simulation. The results show that the proposed adaptive protection algorithm can keep the proper operating time and provide the protective coordination time interval with fast response.

  • Autoreclosing techniques have been used in power systems to maintain system stability and continuity of supply. Environmental and economical issues have driven significant increases in the development of distributed generation (DG). DG connected to distribution systems, however, may impose negative influences with respect to power quality, protection, and stability, because DG can cause some challenges to protection, especially to reclosing. For this reason, in order to improve the reliability and safety of the distribution system, the rules and guidelines suggest that the DG system needs to be rapidly disconnected from the system before reclosing. We present, in this paper, an adaptive reclosing algorithm considering the DG. The algorithm consists of an angle oscillation's judgment, the emergency extended equal-area criterion (EEEAC), the calculation of an optimal reclosing time, and a reconnection algorithm. Our simulation results for three different DG technologies with Electromagnetic Transient Program (EMTP) indicate that we can maintain transient stability while the DG is protected against disturbances.

  • This paper proposes a protection algorithm for a wind turbine generator (WTG) in a large wind farm. To minimize the outage section, a protection relay for a WTG should operate instantaneously for an internal fault or a connected feeder fault, whereas the relay should not operate for an internal fault of another WTG connected to the same feeder or an adjacent feeder fault. In addition, the relay should operate with a delay for an inter-tie fault or a grid fault. An internal fault of another WTG connected to the same feeder or an adjacent feeder fault, where the relay should not operate, is determined based on the magnitude of the positive sequence current. To differentiate an internal fault or a connected feeder fault from an inter-tie fault or a grid fault, the phase angle of the negative sequence current is used to distinguish a fault type. The magnitude of the positive sequence current is then used to decide either instantaneous operation or delayed operation. The performance of the proposed algorithm is verified under various fault conditions with EMTP-RV generated data. The results indicate that the algorithm can successfully distinguish instantaneous operation, delayed operation, or non-operation depending on fault positions and types.

  • This paper presents a new numerical spectral domain algorithm devoted to blocking unsuccessful automatic reclosing onto permanent faults and fault distance calculation. Arc voltage amplitude and fault distance are calculated from the fundamental and third harmonics of the terminal voltages and currents phasors. From the calculated arc voltage amplitude it can be concluded if the fault is transient arcing fault or permanent arcless fault. If the fault is permanent automatic reclosure should be blocked. The algorithm can be applied for adaptive autoreclosure, distance protection, and fault location. The results of algorithm testing through computer simulation and real field record are given.

  • This paper presents new Adaptive Linear Combination Structure (ADALINE) for tracking/estimating voltage-current phasor and frequency of power system. To estimate the phasors and frequency from sampled data, the algorithm assumes that orthogonal coefficients and speed of angular frequency of power system are unknown parameters. With adequate sampled data, the estimation problem can be considered as a linear weighted least squares (LMS) problem. In addition to determining the phasors (orthogonal coefficients), the procedure estimates the power system frequency. The main algorithm is verified through a computer simulation and data from field. The proposed algorithm is tested with transient and dynamic behaviors during power swing, a step change of frequency upon islanding of small generators and disconnection of load. The algorithm shows a very high accuracy, robustness, fast response time and adaptive performance over a wide range of frequency, from 10 to 2000 Hz.

  • To protect against unlawful reproductions and distribution, the current paper proposes a digital watermarking technique for architectural drawings produced using a CAD system. First, the POLYLINEs are extracted from the drawing; then, an adaptive algorithm is used to embed a watermark in the characteristics of each POLYLINE. Next, the CIRCLEs are embedded using an adaptive watermarking algorithm related to the radius of circle from drawing. The proposed watermarking scheme is robust to various attacks, such as the geometrical transformation. Additionally, the proposed method satisfies the requirement of transparency for CAD program. It used AutoCAD 2002, which is commonly used as a CAD program for experiments. Experimental results confirmed the robustness and invisibility of the embedded watermarks in several conversions of an architectural drawing.

  • This paper presents a new adaptive single-phase auto reclosure (SPAR) algorithm to discriminate between a permanent fault and a transient fault and to minimize a protection dead time. The algorithm precisely detects the extinction of the secondary arc, based on THD's profiles on the faulted phase voltage waveform. The EMTP/ATPDraw program was used to simulate the single phase grounding fault for evaluating the proposed algorithm. And the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is performing well.

  • The autoreclosing is applied to power system for maintaining system stability and continuity of supply. Developments on distributed generation(DG) grows significantly by environmental issues and economical issues. If the DG is connected to distribution system, the DG influences the technical aspects such as power quality, protection and stability. It causes the challenges to protection, especially to reclosing. In order to achieve reliability and safety of the distribution system, the rules and guidelines suggest that the DG units should be rapidly disconnected from the network before the reclosing. If the DG is disconnected whenever the fault occurs, it cannot be utilized effectively. This paper presents the adaptive reclosing algorithm considering the DG. The algorithm consists of angle oscillation's judgment, EEEAC(Emergency Expanded Equal-Area Criterion), calculation of optimal reclosing time and re-connection algorithm. The simulation is implemented for the DG technology by using EMTP MODELS. The simulation results show that the transient stability is maintained and the DG is protected against disturbance.

  • This paper is proposed a watermarking technique for copyright protection of multimedia contents. We proposed adaptive watermark detection algorithm using stochastic perceptual model and statistical decision method in DMWT(discrete multi wavelet transform) domain. The stochastic perceptual model calculates NVF(noise visibility function) based on statistical characteristic in the DMWT. Watermark detection algorithm used the likelihood ratio depend on Bayes' decision theory by reliable detection measure and Neyman-Pearson criterion. To reduce visual artifact of image, in this paper, adaptively decide the embedding number of watermark based on DMWT, and then the watermark embedding strength differently at edge and texture region and flat region embedded when watermark embedding minimize distortion of image. In experiment results, the proposed statistical decision method based on multiwavelet domain could decide watermark detection.

  • With the rapid development of computer and communication techniques, copyright protection of vector geographic data has attracted considerable research attention because of the high cost of such data. A novel adaptive watermark detection algorithm is proposed for vector geographic data that can be used to qualitatively analyze the robustness of watermarks against data addition attacks. First, a watermark was embedded into the vertex coordinates based on coordinate mapping and quantization. Second, the adaptive watermark detection model, which is capable of calculating the detection threshold, false positive error (FPE) and false negative error (FNE), was established, and the characteristics of the adaptive watermark detection algorithm were analyzed. Finally, experiments were conducted on several real-world vector maps to show the usability and robustness of the proposed algorithm.
