This paper proposes a hybrid heuristic and criteria-based method of optimum design which combines the advantages of both the iterated simulated annealing (SA) algorithm and the rigorously derived optimality criteria (OC) for structural optimum design of reinforced concrete (RC) buildings under multi-load cases based on the current Chinese design codes. The entire optimum design procedure is divided into two parts: strength optimum design and stiffness optimum design. A modified SA with the strategy of adaptive feasible region is proposed to perform the discrete optimization of RC frame structures under the strength constraints. The optimum stiffness design is conducted using OC method with the optimum results of strength optimum design as the lower bounds of member size. The proposed method is integrated into the commercial software packages for building structural design, SATWE, and for finite element analysis, ANSYS, for practical applications. Finally, two practical frame-shear-wall structures (15-story and 30-story) are optimized to illustrate the effectiveness and practicality of the proposed optimum design method.

A new level set based topology optimization employing inner-front creation algorithm is presented. In the conventional level set based topology optimization, the optimum topology strongly depends on the initial level set distribution due to the incapability of inner-front creation during optimization process. In the present work, in this regard, an inner-front creation algorithm is proposed. in which the sizes. shapes. positions, and number of new inner-fronts during the optimization process can be globally and consistently identified by considering both the value of a given criterion for inner-front creation and the occupied volume (area) of material domain. To facilitate the inner-front creation process, the inner-front creation map which corresponds to the discrete valued criterion of inner-front creation is applied to the level set function. In order to regularize the design domain during the optimization process, the edge smoothing is carried out by solving the edge smoothing partial differential equation (PDE). Updating the level set function during the optimization process, in the present work, the least-squares finite element method (LSFEM) is employed. As demonstrative examples for the flexibility and usefulness of the proposed method. the level set based topology optimization considering lightweight design of 3D shell structure is carried out.

Kriging interpolation is one of the generally used interpolation techniques in Geostatistics field. This technique includes the experimental and theoretical variograms and the formulation of kriging interpolation. In contrast to the conventional least square method for stress recovery, kriging interpolation is based on the weighted least square method to obtain the estimated exact solution from the stress data at the Gauss points. The weight factor is determined by variogram modeling for interpolation of stress data apart from the conventional interpolation methods that use an equal weight factor. In addition to this, the p-level is increased non-uniformly or selectively through a posteriori error estimation based on SPR (superconvergent patch recovery) technique, proposed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu, by auto mesh p-refinement. The cut-out plate problem under tension has been tested to validate this approach. It also provides validity of kriging interpolation through comparing to existing least square method.

Lasting machines for shoe manufacturing are continuously developed with the aid of automation and CAM(Computer Aided Manufacturing). Although automation and CAM techniques have tremendously reduced the labor in shoe manufacturing, there still remain some parts manufactured by experts. In order to enhance the capability and efficiency of machines for labor-free shoe manufacturing, CAD data of a shoe last is essential. While CAD datarization takes the fundamental role in the shoe design and manufacturing, there has been little research for the CAD datarization of a shoe last. In this paper, a new procedure for CAD datarization of a shoe last using finite element patches and a tension sl)line method is proposed for application to shoe manufacturing machines. The outer line of a shoe-last sole is interpolated by a tension spline method and bonding lines are extracted from the shoe CAD data. Data set for a control algorithm of the tasting machine can be produced from the CAD data.

In this paper, the three-dimensional stress effect of thermal oxide is simulated. We developed a three-dimensional finite element numerical simulator including three-dimensional adaptive mesh generator that is able to refine and eliminate nearby moving boundary of oxide, and oxidation solver with stress model. To investigate the behavior of thermal oxidation the simulations of thermal oxidation for island and hole structures are carried out assuming silicon wafer of <100> direction, temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$, oxidation time of 60min, wet ambient, initial oxide thickness of $300\AA$, and nitride thickness of $2, 000\AA$. The main effect of deformation at the corner area of oxide is due to distribution of oxidant, but the deformation of oxide is affected by the stressin theoxide. In the island structure which is the structure mostly covered with nitride and a coner is opended to oxidation, oxidation is reduced at the coner by compressive stress. In the hole structure which is the structure mostly opedned to oxide and a coner is convered with nitride, however, oxidation is increased at the coner by tensile stress.

This paper presents some examples of active control of flow-induced vibration using piezoelectric actuators. The flutter phenomenon, which is the dynamic instability of structure due to mutual interaction among inertia, stiffness, and aerodynamic forces, may cause catastrophic structural failure, and therefore the active flutter suppression is one of the main objectives of the aeroelastic control. Active flutter control has been numerically and experimentally studied for swept-back lifting surfaces using piezoelectric actuation. A finite element method, a panel aerodynamic method, and the minimum state space realization are involved in the development of the governing equation, which is efficiently used for the analysis of the system and design of control laws with modern control framework. The active control suppressed flow-induced vibrations and extended the flutter speed around by 10%. Another representative flow-induced vibration phenomenon is the oscillation of blunt bodies due to the vortex shedding. In general, it is quite difficult to set up the numerical model because of the strong non-linearity of the vortex shedding structure. Therefore, we applied adaptive positive position feedback controller, which requires no pre-determined model of the plant, and successfully suppressed the flow-induced vibration.
This paper carried out the optimal design of Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) to attenuate the vibrational energy of pipeline subjected to fluid movement. Under the uncertainty of the vibration source and the specification of a pipeline system, an adaptive approach to design TMD is suggested. A surrogate pipeline system model was designed using MATLAB, and the optimal design method was developed based on the surrogate pipe model. The developed optimization method was validated using Finite Element (FE) model in ANSYS Workbench. And the TMD was designed to account for measurement error and installed on the industrial pipeline system. It showed that the pipeline vibrational amplitude was reduced by 95 % after installing the TMD.

In this study, the efficiency of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and genetic expression programming (GEP) in predicting the effects of infill walls on base reactions and roof drift of reinforced concrete frames were investigated. Current standards generally consider weight and fundamental period of structures in predicting base reactions and roof drift of structures by neglecting numbers of floors, bays, shear walls and infilled bays. Number of stories, number of bays in x and y directions, ratio of shear wall areas to the floor area, ratio of bays with infilled walls to total number bays and existence of open story were selected as parameters in GEP and ANFIS modeling. GEP and ANFIS have been widely used as alternative approaches to model complex systems. The effects of these parameters on base reactions and roof drift of RC frames were studied using 3D finite element method on 216 building models. Results obtained from 3D FEM models were used to in training and testing ANFIS and GEP models. In ANFIS and GEP models, number of floors, number of bays, ratio of shear walls and ratio of infilled bays were selected as input parameters, and base reactions and roof drifts were selected as output parameters. Results showed that the ANFIS and GEP models are capable of accurately predicting the base reactions and roof drifts of RC frames used in the training and testing phase of the study. The GEP model results better prediction compared to ANFIS model.
