The WiMedia Alliance has specified a Distributed Medium Access Control (D-MAC) protocol based on UWB for high speed wireless home networks and WPANs. In this paper, we propose a novel cooperative communication protocol adaptive to current UWB link transmission rate. The proposed cooperative communication protocol has compatibility with current WiMedia D-MAC and Wireless USB standard and is executed at each device according to a Relay Node Selection (RNS) criterion.

The deployment of geographically distributed wireless sensors has greatly elevated the capability of monitoring structural health in social-overhead capital (SOC) public infrastructures. This paper deals with the utilization of a distributed mobility management (DMM) approach for the deployment of wireless sensing devices in a structural health monitoring system (SHM). Then, a wireless sensing mechanism utilizing low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH)-based clustering algorithm for smart sensors has been analyzed to support the seamless data transmission of structural health information which is essentially important to guarantee public safety. The clustering of smart sensors will be able to provide real-time monitoring of structural health and a filtering algorithm to boost the transmission of critical information over heterogeneous wireless and mobile networks.
The exponential growth in wireless services has resulted in an overly crowded spectrum. The current state of spectrum allocation indicates that most usable frequencies have already been occupied. This makes one pessimistic about the feasibility of integrating emerging wireless services such as large-scale sensor networks into the existing communication infrastructure. Cognitive radio is an emerging dynamic spectrum access technology that can be used for flexibly and efficiently achieving open spectrum sharing. Cognitive radio is an intelligent wireless communication system that is aware of its radio environment and that is capable of adapting its operation to statistical variations of the radio frequency. In ad hoc cognitive radio networks, a common control channel (CCC) is usually used for supporting transmission coordination and spectrum-related information exchange. Determining a CCC in distributed networks is a challenging research issue because the spectrum availability at each ad hoc node is quite different and dynamic due to the interference between and coexistence of primary users. In this paper, we propose a novel CCC selection protocol that is implemented in a distributed way according to the appearance patterns of primary systems and connectivity among nodes. The proposed protocol minimizes the possibility of CCC disruption by primary user activities and maximizes node connectivity when the control channel is set up. It also facilitates adaptive recovery of the control channel when the primary user is detected on that channel.

The spectrum efficiency of mobile communication networks can be improved dramatically adopting multiple antennas technologies. In order to guarantee the licensed rights of primary user (PU), the cognitive radio system should perform in a relatively low interference manner when it gets access to the spectrum of licensed networks. In this paper, we explore a uniformly distributed circular antenna array to implement beamforming algorithm that is accomplished by optimization method at the base station of cognitive radio networks, and therefore we can suppress the interference to PU by steering quite low transmission power toward PU and constructing a narrow beam toward cognitive user (CU). By reducing the constraint number of the optimization problem, we also propose a null steering algorithm that steers rather low radiation power toward PU, while the other areas in the same cell are covered by radiation power except the local area around PU. It is pursued to reduce the computation load and enlarge the capacity of cognitive radio networks extremely. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms process superior performance.

In this paper, we propose a heuristic wavelength routing algorithm for IP datagrams in WDM (Wavelength-Division Multiplexing) networks which operates in a distributed manner, while most previous works have focused centralized algorithms. We first present an efficient construction method for a loose virtual topology with a connectivity property, which reserves a few wavelength to cope with dynamic traffic demands properly. This connectivity property assures that data from any source node could reach any destination node by hopping one or multiple lightpaths. We then develop a high-speed distributed wavelength routing algorithm adaptive to dynamic traffic demands by using such a loose virtual topology and derive the general bounds on average utilization in the distributed wavelength routing algorithms. Finally, we show that the performance of the proposed algorithms is better than that of the FSP(Fixed Shortest-Path) wavelength routing algorithms through simulation using the NSFNET[1] and a dynamic hot-spot traffic model, and that the algorithms is a good candidate in distributed WDM networks in terms of the blocking performance, the control traffic overhead, and the computation complexity.

This paper investigates a synchronization algorithm for a distributed network which does not have a centralized infrastructure. In order to operate a distributed network, synchronization across distributed terminals should be acquired in advance, and hence, a plenty of distributed synchronization algorithms have been studied extensively in the past. However, most of the previous studies focus on the synchronization only in fault-free networks. Thus, if there are some malfunctioning terminals in the network, the synchronization can not be guaranteed with conventional distributed synchronization methods. In this paper, we propose a reliability-based adaptive consensus algorithm which can effectively acquire the synchronization across distributed terminals and confirm performance of the proposed algorithm by conducting numerical simulations.

Doubly-selective (DS) fading channel is often occurred in many orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems, such as high-speed rail communication systems and underwater acoustic (UWA) wireless networks. It is challenging to provide an accurate and fast estimation over the doubly-selective channel, due to the strong Doppler shift. This paper addresses the doubly selective channel estimation problem based on complex exponential basis expansion model (CE-BEM) in OFDM systems from the perspective of distributed compressive sensing (DCS). We propose a novel DCS-based improved sparsity adaptive matching pursuit (DCS-IMSAMP) algorithm. The advantage of the proposed algorithm is that it can exploit the joint channel sparsity information using dynamic threshold, variable step size and tailoring mechanism. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves 5dB performance gain with faster operation speed, in comparison with traditional DCS-based sparsity adaptive matching pursuit (DCS-SAMP) algorithm.
The objective of this paper is to control a nonlinear dynamical systems based on Self-Organized Distributed Networks (SODN). The learning with the SODN is fast and precise. Such properties are caused from the local learning mechanism Each local network learns only data in a subregion. Methods for indirect adaptive control of nonlinear systems using the SODN is presented. Through extensive simulation, the SODN is shown to be effective for adaptive control of nonlinear dynamic systems.
A mobile ad-hoc network is composed of only mobile nodes, which are distributed dynamically, without any wired backbone or centralized entities. Since the existing works on ad-hoc routing protocol are mostly biased toward a military application, we need a new routing scheme for a support of multimedia services in mobile ad-hoc networks. Therefore, we propose a novel scheme that can support a variety of traffic attributes and can be applicable to high-speed and multimedia data services in mobile ad-hoc networks by using adaptive transmission power level. As a result of simulation, the proposed scheme has better performance than conventional method, which is performed with uniform transmission power level, in view of route query delay time.

Spectrum sharing in centrally controlled cognitive radio (CR) networks has been widely studied, however, research on channel access for distributively controlled individual cognitive users has not been fully characterized. This paper conducts an analysis of random channel access of cognitive users controlled in a distributed manner in a CR network. Based on the proposed estimation method, each cognitive user can estimate the current channel condition by using its own Markov-chain model and can compute its own blocking probability, collision probability, and forced termination probability. Using the proposed scheme, CR with distributed control (CR-DC), CR devices can make self-controlled decisions based on the status estimations to adaptively control its system parameters to communicate better.
