An applied technique of contrast enhancement for X-ray image is proposed which is based on combined enhancement of scaling and wavelet coefficients in discrete wavelet transform space. Conventional contrast enhancement methods such as contrast limited adaptive histogram equalization (CLAHE), multi-scale image contrast amplification (MUSICA) and gamma correction were applied on scaling coefficients to enhance the contrast of an original. In order to enhance the detail as well as reduce the blurring caused by up scaling of contrast modified scale coefficients from lower resolution, the sigmoid manipulation function was used to manipulate wavelet coefficients. The contrast detail mammography (CDMAM) phantom was imaged and processed to measure the image line profile of results and contrast to noise ratio (CNR) comparatively. The proposed technique produced better results than direct application of various contrast enhancement methods on image itself. The proposed method can enhance contrast, and also suppress the amplification of noise components in a single process. It could be useful for various applications in medical, industrial and graphical images where contrast and detail are of importance.
3D video is regarded as the next generation contents in numerous applications. The 2D-to-3D video conversion technologies are strongly required to resolve a lack of 3D videos during the period of transition to the full ripe 3D video era. In 2D-to-3D conversion methods, after the depth image of each scene in 2D video is estimated, stereoscopic video is synthesized using DIBR (Depth Image Based Rendering) technologies. This paper proposes a novel depth fusion algorithm that integrates multiple depth cues contained in 2D video to generate stereoscopic video. For the proper depth fusion, it is checked whether some cues are reliable or not in current scene. Based on the result of the reliability tests, current scene is classified into one of 4 scene types and scene-adaptive depth fusion is applied to combine those reliable depth cues to generate the final depth information. Simulation results show that each depth cue is reasonably utilized according to scene types and final depth is generated by cues which can effectively represent the current scene.
Base isolation, one of the popular seismic protection approaches proven to be effective in practical applications, has been widely applied worldwide during the past few decades. As the techniques mature, it has been recognised that, the biggest issue faced in base isolation technique is the challenge of great base displacement demand, which leads to the potential of overturning of the structure, instability and permanent damage of the isolators. Meanwhile, drain, ventilation and regular maintenance at the base isolation level are quite difficult and rather time- and fund- consuming, especially in the highly populated areas. To address these challenges, a number of efforts have been dedicated to propose new isolation systems, including segmental building, additional storey isolation (ASI) and mid-storey isolation system, etc. However, such techniques have their own flaws, among which whipping effect is the most obvious one. Moreover, due to their inherent passive nature, all these techniques, including traditional base isolation system, show incapability to cope with the unpredictable and diverse nature of earthquakes. The solution for the aforementioned challenge is to develop an innovative vibration isolation system to realise variable structural stiffness to maximise the adaptability and controllability of the system. Recently, advances on the development of an adaptive magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) vibration isolator has enlightened the development of adaptive base isolation systems due to its ability to alter stiffness by changing applied electrical current. In this study, an innovative semi-active storey isolation system inserting such novel MRE isolators between each floor is proposed. The stiffness of each level in the proposed isolation system can thus be changed according to characteristics of the MRE isolators. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm type II (NSGA-II) with dynamic crowding distance (DCD) is utilised for the optimisation of the parameters at isolation level in the system. Extensive comparative simulation studies have been conducted using 5-storey benchmark model to evaluate the performance of the proposed isolation system under different earthquake excitations. Simulation results compare the seismic responses of bare building, building with passive controlled MRE base isolation system, building with passive-controlled MRE storey isolation system and building with optimised storey isolation system.
Virtual memory systems (VM) reduce disk I/Os caused by page faults using page prefetching, which reads pages together with a desired page at a page fault in a single disk I/O. Operating systems including 4.4BSD attempt to prefetch as many pages as possible at a page fault regardless of page access patterns of applications. However, such an approach increases a disk access time taken to service a page fault when a high portion of the prefetched pages is not referenced. More seriously, the approach can cause the memory pollution, a problem that prefetched pages not to be accessed evict another pages that will be referenced soon. To solve these problems, we propose an adaptive page prefetching control scheme (APC), which periodically monitors access patterns of prefetched pages in a process unit. Such a pattern is represented as the ratio of referenced pages among prefetched ones before they are evicted from memory. Then APC uses the ratio to adjust the number of pages that 4.4BSD VM intends to prefetch at a page fault. Thus APC allows 4.4BSD VM to prefetch a proper number of pages to have a better effect on reducing disk I/Os, though page access patterns of an application vary in runtime. The experiment of our technique implemented in FreeBSD 6.2 shows that APC improves the execution times of SOR, SMM, and FFT benchmarks over 4.4BSD VM by up to 57%.

We propose a novel low complexity video encoder, at the expense of a complex decoder, where video frames are intra-coded periodically and frames in between successive intra-coded frames are coded efficiently using a proposed irregular binning technique. We investigate a method of forming an irregular binning which is capable of quantizing any value effectively with only small number of bins, by exploiting the correlation between successive frames. This correlation is additionally exploited at the decoder, where the quality of reconstructed frames is enhanced gradually by applying POCS(projection on the convex sets). After an image frame is reconstructed with the irregular binning information at the proposed decoder, we can further improve the resulting quality by modifying the reconstructed image with motion-compensated image components from the neighboring frames which are considered to contain image details. In the proposed decoder, several iterations of these modification and re-projection steps can be invoked. Experimental results show that the performance of the proposed coding scheme is comparable to that of H.264/AVC coding in m mode. Since the proposed video coding does not require motion estimation at the encoder, it can be considered as an alternative for some versions of H.264/AVC in applications requiring a simple encoder.

In this paper, we propose a novel intelligent headlight control (IHC) system which is durable to various road lights and camera movement caused by vehicle driving. For detecting candidate light blobs, the region of interest (ROI) is decided as front ROI (FROI) and back ROI (BROI) by considering the camera geometry based on perspective range estimation model. Then, light blobs such as headlights, taillights of vehicles, reflection light as well as the surrounding road lighting are segmented using two different adaptive thresholding. From the number of segmented blobs, taillights are first detected using the redness checking and random forest classifier based on Haar-like feature. For the headlight and taillight classification, we use the random forest instead of popular support vector machine or convolutional neural networks for supporting fast learning and testing in real-life applications. Pairing is performed by using the predefined geometric rules, such as vertical coordinate similarity and association check between blobs. The proposed algorithm was successfully applied to various driving sequences in night-time, and the results show that the performance of the proposed algorithms is better than that of recent related works.

A variable-gain low-voltage low noise amplifier MMIC operating at 5GHz frequency band is designed and implemented using the ETRI 0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ GaAs MESFET library process. This low noise amplifier is designed to have the variable gain for adaptive antenna array combined in HIPERLAN/2. The feedback circuit of a resistor and channel resistance controlled by the gate voltage of enhancement MESFET is proposed for the variable-gain low noise amplifier consisted of cascaded two stages. The fabricated variable gain amplifier exhibits 5.5GHz center frequency, 14.7dB small signal gain, 10.6dB input return loss, 10.7dB output return loss, 14.4dB variable gain, and 2.98dB noise figure at V$\_$DD/=1.5V, V$\_$GGl/=0.4V, and V$\_$GG2/=0.5V. This low noise amplifier also shows-19.7dBm input PldB, -10dBm IIP3, 52.6dB SFDR, and 9.5mW power consumption.

A beach has such functions as disaster prevention, providing an amenity place, attracting people and maintaining the coastal ecosystem. Already well known that a beach provides an amenity place, it has also been ascertained through various examples that a sand beach performs a very important function to maintain the coastal ecosystem as well. However, Beach erosion began to occur in Korea in the 1990's and posed a social problem in the late 1990's. Nowadays, along the shorelines of Korea's many beaches, about 400 beaches have reported erosion. This study demonstrate the Disaster Overall Prevention System for Beach Erosion and it's application. The Disaster Overall Prevention System for Beach Erosion is a coastal management system established for managing the implementation of long-term countermeasures to protect eroded beaches effectively in this study. Especially, the economic feasibility test and adaptive management for sustainable mitigation included in DOPS. The coastal prevention work applied to Namae beach is carried out by Disaster Overall Prevention System. Consequently, beach nourishment is proposed as a main countermeasure. Also, submerged artificial reefs and groin integrating artificial rock are proposed as secondary countermeasures for beach erosion. This resulted to be the optimal beach erosion countermeasure from DOPS, considering the economic and environmental conditions of the study area.
With the growing proliferation of mobile computing devices, several industrial and academic research groups have a vigorous studying to remote control for various appliances with mobile devices such as Notebooks, PDAs, and Smartphones in home network environments. We can utilize the good points of mobile devices such as portability and usability so that we can remote control and manage the mobile devices connected on home networks anytime, anywhere. However, mobile devices use different languages. Therefore, they cause some problems because their interfaces and the methods of operation are different each other. To solve these problems, there are two consideration. First, we may be solved development of the user interface and difficulty of maintenance in order to control various heterogeneous devices. Second, we may provide the user interface which is dynamically adapting user's preferences and device characteristics. To satisfy these considerations, we describe the design of an adaptive user interface for home network environments using the UIML (User Interface Markup Language) based on XML (eXtensible Markup Language) and the profile information of the user and device. Therefore, we present several implementation examples that show how the framework can form the basis of prototypical applications.
In these days, we have increasing demands on the real-time services, especially for the multimedia data transmission in both of wired and wireless environments and thus efficient and stable ways of transmitting realtime data are needs. Although RTP is widely used for internet-based realtime applications, it cannot avoid packet losses, due to the use of UDP stack and its underlying layers. In the case of mobile computing applications, the packet losses are more frequent and consecutive because of the limited bandwidth. In this paper, we first statistically analyze the characteristics of packet losses in the wired and wireless communications, based on Gilbert model, and a new packet recovery scheme for realtime data transmission is presented. To reflect the transmission characteristics of the present network environment, our scheme makes the sender to dynamically adjust the amount of redundant information, using the current packet loss characteristic parameters reported by the receiver. Additionally, we use relatively large and discontinuous offset values, which enables us to recover from both of the random and consecutive packet losses. Due to these characteristics, our scheme is suitable for the mobile computing environment where packet loss rates are relatively high and varies rapidly in a wide range. Since our scheme is based on the analytic model form statistics, it can also be used for other network environments. We have implemented the scheme with Mobile IP and RTP/RTCP protocols to experimentally verify its efficiency.
