Purpose For living donor liver transplantation, liver segmentation is difficult due to the variability of its shape across patients and similarity of the density of neighbor organs such as heart, stomach, kidney, and spleen. In this paper, we propose an automatic segmentation of the liver using multi-planar anatomy and deformable surface model in portal phase of abdominal contrast-enhanced CT images. Method Our method is composed of four main steps. First, the optimal liver volume is extracted by positional information of pelvis and rib and by separating lungs and heart from CT images. Second, anisotropic diffusing filtering and adaptive thresholding are used to segment the initial liver volume. Third, morphological opening and connected component labeling are applied to multiple planes for removing neighbor organs. Finally, deformable surface model and probability summation map are performed to refine a posterior liver surface and missing left robe in previous step. Results All experimental datasets were acquired on ten living donors using a SIEMENS CT system. Each image had a matrix size of $512{\times}512$ pixels with in-plane resolutions ranging from 0.54 to 0.70 mm. The slice spacing was 2.0 mm and the number of images per scan ranged from 136 to 229. For accuracy evaluation, the average symmetric surface distance (ASD) and the volume overlap error (VE) between automatic segmentation and manual segmentation by two radiologists are calculated. The ASD was $0.26{\pm}0.12mm$ for manual1 versus automatic and $0.24{\pm}0.09mm$ for manual2 versus automatic while that of inter-radiologists was $0.23{\pm}0.05mm$. The VE was $0.86{\pm}0.45%$ for manual1 versus automatic and $0.73{\pm}0.33%$ for manaual2 versus automatic while that of inter-radiologist was $0.76{\pm}0.21%$. Conclusion Our method can be used for the liver volumetry for the pre-surgery planning of living donor liver transplantation.

A new multi constant modulus algorithm (MCMA) for a blind decision feedback equalizer is proposed. In order to avoid the error propagation problem in the conventional DFE structure, Feed-Back Filter coefficients are updated only after Feed-Forward Filter coefficients are sufficiently converged to the steady state. Therefore, it has the problem of slow convergence speed characteristics. To overcome this drawback, the proposed MCMA algorithm uses not only new cost function considering the minimum distance between the received signal and the representative value containing the statistical characteristics of the transmitted signal, but also adaptive step-size according to the equalizer outputs to fast convergence speed of FBF. Simulations were carried out under the certified communication channel environment to evaluate a performance of the proposed equalizer. The simulation results show that the proposed equalizer has an improved convergence and SER performance compared with previous methods. The proposed techniques offer the possibility of practical equalization for cable modem and terrestrial HDTV broadcast (using 8-VSB or 64-QAM) applications.
In this paper. we propose an effective compensation scheme to the quantization error arisen from quantized learning in a machine learning on an embedded system. In the machine learning based on a gradient descent or nonlinear signal processing, the quantization error generates early vanishing of a gradient and occurs the degradation of learning performance. To compensate such quantization error, we derive an orthogonal compensation vector with respect to a maximum component of the gradient vector. Moreover, instead of the conventional constant learning rate, we propose the adaptive learning rate algorithm without any inner loop to select the step size, based on a nonlinear optimization technique. The simulation results show that the optimization solver based on the proposed quantized method represents sufficient learning performance.
The performance of blind source separation(BSS) using independent component analysis (ICA) declines significantly in a reverberant environment. A post-processing method proposed in this paper was designed to remove the residual component precisely. The proposed method used modified NLMS(normalized least mean square) filter in frequency domain, to estimate cross-talk path that causes residual cross-talk components. Residual cross-talk components in one channel is correspond to direct components in another channel. Therefore, we can estimate cross-talk path using another channel input signals from adaptive filter. Step size is normalized by input signal power in conventional NLMS filter, but it is normalized by sum of input signal power and error signal power in modified NLMS filter. By using this method, we can prevent misadjustment of filter weights. The estimated residual cross-talk components are subtracted by non-stationary spectral subtraction. The computer simulation results using speech signals show that the proposed method improves the noise reduction ratio(NRR) by approximately 3dB on conventional FDICA.

In this paper, we propose a very efficient method which reconstructs the high resolution surface from a set of unorganized points. Our method is based on the level set method using adaptive octree. We start with the surface reconstruction model proposed in [20]. In [20], they introduced a very fast and efficient method which is different from the previous methods using the level set method. Most existing methods[21, 22] employed the time evolving process from an initial surface to point cloud. But in [20], they considered the surface reconstruction process as an elliptic problem in the narrow band including point cloud. So they could obtain very speedy method because they didn't have to limit the time evolution step by the finite speed of propagation. However, they implemented that model just on the uniform grid. So they still have the weakness that it needs so much memories because of being fulfilled only on the uniform grid. Their algorithm basically solves a large linear system of which size is the same as the number of the grid in a narrow band. Besides, it is not easy to make the width of band narrow enough since the decision of band width depends on the distribution of point data. After all, as far as it is implemented on the uniform grid, it is almost impossible to generate the surface on the high resolution because the memory requirement increases geometrically. We resolve it by adapting octree data structure[12, 11] to our problem and by introducing a new redistancing algorithm which is different from the existing one[19].

This paper propose the NM-MMA (Novel Mixed-MMA) that is possible to improving the convergence speed of current MMA algorithm and reducing the high MSE of SE-MMA algorithm, and its equalization performance were analyzed. The cost function of the NM-MMA configured as the sum of appropriate weights of gradient vector of current MMA and SE-MMA, and then it used for the updating the tap coefficient of equalizer. The computer simulation was performed applying the same environment in the channel, step size and signal to noise ratio, and the same performance index in equalizer output signal constellation, residual isi, MSE, SER was used. As a result of computer simulation, the proposed NM-MMA has fast convergence time than MMA, and less in MSE and SER performance compared to SE-MMA.

This paper related with the performance evaluation of mSE-MMA (modified Signed Error-Multi Modulus Algorithm) adaptive equalization algorithm which is possible to reduce the distortion that is occurs in nonlinear communication channel like as additive noise, intersymbol interference and fading. The SE-MMA algorithm are emerged in order to reducing the computational load compared to the presently MMA algorithm, it has the degraded equalization performance by this. In order to improve the performance degradation of SE-MMA, the mSE-MMA controls the step size according to the existence of arbitrary radius circle of equalizer output is centered at transmitted symbol point. The performance of proposed mSE-MMA algorithm were compared to present SE-MMA using the same channel and noise environment by computer simulation. For this, the recoverd signal constellation which is the output of equalizer, residual isi and MD (Maximum Distortion), MSE learning curve which is represents the convergence performance and SER which is represents the roburstness of noise were used as performance index. As a result of simulation, the mSE-MMA has more superior to the SE-MMA in every performance index, and was confirmed that mSE-MMA has roburstness to the noise in the SER performance than SE-MMA especially.

In this paper, we present a deblocking algorithm that removes grid and staircase noises, which are called "blocking artifacts", occurred in the compressed satellite images. Particularly, the given satellite images are compressed with equal quantization coefficients in row according to region complexity, and more complicated regions are compressed more. However, this approach has a problem that relatively less complicated regions within the same row of complicated regions have blocking artifacts. Removing these artifacts with a general deblocking algorithm can blur complex and undesired regions as well. Additionally, the general filter lacks in preserving the curved edges. Therefore, the proposed algorithm presents an adaptive filtering scheme for removing blocking artifacts while preserving the image details including curved edges using the given quantization step size and content analysis. Particularly, WLFPCA (weighted lowpass filter using principle component analysis) is employed to reduce the artifacts around edges. Experimental results showed that the proposed method outperforms SA-DCT in terms of subjective image quality.
Mesh networks using WLAN technology have been paid attention as a key wireless access technology. However, many technical issues still exist for its successful deployment. One of those issues is the routing problem that addresses the path setup through a WLAN mesh network for the data exchanges between a station and a wired network. Since the characteristics of a WLAN mesh network can be very dynamic, the use of single routing protocol would not fit for all environments whether it is reactive or proactive. Therefore, it is required to develop an adaptive routing protocol that modifies itself according to the changes in the network parameters. As a logical first step for the development, an analytical model considering all the dynamic features of a WLAN mesh network is required to evaluate the performance of a reactive and a proactive routing scheme. In this paper, we propose an analytical model that makes us scrutinize the impact of the network and station parameters on the performance of each routing protocol. Our model includes the size of a mesh network, the density of stations, mobility of stations. and the duration of network topology change. We applied our model to the AODV that is a representative reactive routing protocol and DSDV that is a representative proactive routing protocol to analyze the tradeoff between AODV and DSDV in dynamic network environments. Our model is expected to help developing an adaptive routing protocol for a WLAN mesh network.
In recent years the amount of digital video used has risen dramatically to keep pace with the increasing use of the Internet and consequently an automated method is needed for indexing digital video databases. Textual information, both superimposed and embedded scene texts, appearing in a digital video can be a crucial clue for helping the video indexing. In this paper, a new method is presented to extract both superimposed and embedded scene texts in a freeze-frame of news video. The algorithm is summarized in the following three steps. For the first step, a color image is converted into a gray-level image and applies contrast stretching to enhance the contrast of the input image. Then, a modified local adaptive thresholding is applied to the contrast-stretched image. The second step is divided into three processes: eliminating text-like components by applying erosion, dilation, and (OpenClose+CloseOpen)/2 morphological operations, maintaining text components using (OpenClose+CloseOpen)/2 operation with a new Geo-correction method, and subtracting two result images for eliminating false-positive components further. In the third filtering step, the characteristics of each component such as the ratio of the number of pixels in each candidate component to the number of its boundary pixels and the ratio of the minor to the major axis of each bounding box are used. Acceptable results have been obtained using the proposed method on 300 news images with a recognition rate of 93.6%. Also, my method indicates a good performance on all the various kinds of images by adjusting the size of the structuring element.
