  • Shock wave propagating in the particle suspension has important applications. Examples are shock waves occurring in the solid rocket plume and detonation of dusty particles by shock waves. Experimental and numerical investigations on this subject have drawn much attention. More recently, Sivier et al. numerically simulated the experiment of Sommerfeld using the unstructured adaptive grid. They used the Eulerian-Eulerian approach based on the continuum assumption for both gas and particles. In the present paper, a new numerical method using the Lagrangian particle tracing technique and unstructured particle-adaptive grid for the polydisperse system is presented. It is explained why the existing numerical calculation has showed discrepancy with the experimental results by Sommerfeld.

  • Smart Grid is an intelligent power grid for efficiently producing and consuming electricity through bi-directional communication between power producers and consumers. As renewable energy develops, the share of renewable energy in the smart grid is increasing. Renewable energy has a problem that it differs from existing power generation methods that can predict and control power generation because the power generation changes in real time. Applying a self-adaptative framework to the Smart Grid will enable efficient operation of the Smart Grid by adapting to the amount of renewable energy power generated in real time. In this paper, we assume that smart villages equipped with photovoltaic power generation facilities are installed, and apply the self-adaptative framework, AiTES, to show that smart grid can be efficiently operated through self adaptation framework.

  • In this paper, we propose a DRF-based object detection method using the object adaptive patch in the satellite imagery. It is a Discriminative Random Fields (DRF) based work, so the detection is done by labeling to the possible patches in the image. For the feature information of each patch, we use the multi-scale and object adaptive patch and its texton histogram, instead of using the single scale and fixed grid patch. So, we can include contextual layout of texture information around the object. To make object adaptive patch, we use "superpixel lattice" scheme. As a result, each group of labeled patches represents the object or object's presence region. In the experiment, we compare the detection result with a fixed grid scheme and shows our result is more close to the object shape.

  • A new numerical weather prediction and dispersion model, the Operational Multi-scale Environment model with Grid Adaptivity(OMEGA) including an embedded Atmospheric Dispersion Model(ADM), is introduced as a next generation atmospheric simulation system for real-time hazard predictions, such as severe weather or the transport of hazardous release. OMEGA is based on an unstructured grid that can facilitate a continuously varying horizontal grid resolution ranging from 100 km down to 1 km and a vertical resolution from 20 -30 meters in the boundary layer to 1 km in the free atmosphere. OMEGA is also naturally scale spanning and time. In particular, the unstructured grid cells in the horizontal dimension can increase the local resolution to better capture the topography or important physical features of the atmospheric circulation and cloud dynamics. This means the OMEGA can readily adapt its grid to a stationary surface, terrain features, or dynamic features in an evolving weather pattern. While adaptive numerical techniques have yet to be extensively applied in atmospheric models, the OMEGA model is the first to exploit the adaptive nature of an unstructured gridding technique for atmospheric simulation and real-time hazard prediction. The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed description of the OMEGA model, the OMEGA system, and a detailed comparison of OMEGA forecast results with observed data.

  • This paper presents an alternative frequency adaptive grid synchronization technique named HDN-FLL, which can accurately extract the fundamental positive- and negative-sequence components and interested harmonics in adverse three-phase grid voltage. The HDN-FLL is based on the harmonic decoupling network (HDN) consisting of multiple first order complex vector filters (FOCVF) with a frequency-locked loop (FLL), which makes the system frequency adaptive. The stability of the proposed FLL is strictly verified to be global asymptotically stable. In addition, the linearization and parameters tuning of the FLL is also discussed. The structure of the HDN has been widely used as a prefilter in grid synchronization techniques. However, the stability of the general HDN is seldom discussed. In this paper, the transfer function expression of the general HDN is deduced and its stability is verified by the root locus method. To show the advantages of the HDN-FLL, a simulation comparison with other gird synchronization methods is carried out. Experimental results verify the excellent performance of the proposed synchronization method.

  • Smart grid is widely considered to be a next generation power grid, which will be integrated with information feedback communications. However, smart grid communication technologies are subject to inefficient spectrum allocation problems. Cognitive radio networks can solve the problemof spectrumscarcity by opening the under-utilized licensed bands to secondary users. In this paper, adaptive cognitive radio spectrum sensing and sharing algorithms are developed for smart grid environments. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme in comparison with other existing schemes.

  • This paper describes evaluation results of the wind power penetration limit (WPPL) and the wind energy penetration (WEP) in the Mongolian central power system (MCPS). A wind power plant (WPP) in a power system possesses an output power limit because the power system must maintain a balance between the generation and consumption of electricity at all times in order to achieve an adequate level of quality. The instantaneous penetration limit (IPL) of wind generation at a load is determined as the minimum of the three technical constraints: the minimum output, the ramp rate capability, and the spinning reserve of the conventional generating units. In this paper, a WPPL is defined as the maximum IPL divided by the peak load. A maximal variation rate (VR) of wind power is a major factor in determining the IPL, WPPL, and WEP. This paper analyzes the effects of the maximal VR of wind power on the WPPL, WEP, and capacity factor (CF) in the MCPS. The results indicate that a small VR can facilitate a large amount of wind energy while maintaining a high CF with increased wind power penetration.

  • The analysis involves an adaptive grid that is created under a criterion of element categorization of filling states and locations in the total region at each time step. By using an adaptive grid wherein the elements, finer than those in internal and external regions, are distributed at the surface region through refinement and coarsening procedures, a more efficient analysis of transient fluid flow with free surface is achieved. Using the proposed numerical technique, the collapse of a dam is analyzed. The numerical results agree well with the theoretical solutions as well as with the experimental results. Through comparisons with the numerical results of several cases using different types of grids, the efficiency of the proposed technique is verified.

  • This paper describes an adaptive quadtree-based 2DH wave-current interaction model which is able to predict wave breaking, shoaling, refraction, diffraction, wave-current interaction, set-up and set-down, mixing processes (turbulent diffusion), bottom frictional effects, and movement of the land-water interface at the shoreline. The wave period-and depth-averaged governing equations are discretised explictly by means of an Adams-Bashforth second-order finite difference technaique on adaptive hierarchical staggered quadtree grids. Grid adaptation is achieved through seeding points distributed according to flow criteria(e.g. local current gradients). Results are presented for nearshore circulation at a sinusoidal beach. Enrichment permits refined modelling of important localised flow features.

  • In a previous research, we presented the Grid Method and confirmed it as a systematic and efficient problem formulation method for the task-oriented design of robot kinematics. However, our previous research was limited in two ways. First, it gave only a local optimum due to its use of a local optimization technique. Second, it used constant weights for a cost function chosen by the manual weights tuning algorithm, thereby showing low efficiency in finding an optimal solution. To overcome these two limitations, therefore, this paper presents a global optimization technique and an adaptive weights tuning algorithm to solve a formulated problem using the Grid Method. The efficiencies of the proposed algorithms have been confirmed through the kinematic design examples of various robot manipulators.
