Using directional antenna in wireless network can offer many advantages including significant decrease of interference, increase of spatial reuse and possibility of improving network capacity. However, existing 802.11 MAC is designed for use of omni-directional antenna then those advantages can not be shown in that MAC protocol when it uses directional antenna. In this paper, we present a MAC protocol specifically designed for directional antenna to achieve spatial reuse and improve capacity of MAC protocol. Simulation result shows the advantages of our proposal in comparison with existing MAC in terms of end-to-end delay and network throughput.
In this paper, we propose the enhanced CSMA/CA MAC protocol fir mobile multi-hop wireless Ad-hoc networks. In the conventional wireless Ad-hoc network such as WLAN using CSMA/CA MAC protocol, communications between terminals that fn connected within multi-hop node may degrade the transmission efficiencies as increasing the multi-hop nodes because of RTS-CTS-DATA-ACK message exchange between terminals. In this raper, we apply the ACK/RTS control message into multi-hop transmission between terminals for wireless ad-hoc networks and improve the data traffic transmission efficiencies compared with conventional CSMA/CA MAC protocol used in WLAN.
The directional MAC (DMAC) protocol improves the spatial reuse, but directional packets on the control channel cause the deafness problem. In this paper, we propose a tone dual-channel DMAC protocol for mobile ad-hoc networks. In the proposed MAC protocol, the use of omnidirectional transmissions using an omnidirectional out-of-band tone solves the deafness problem and decrease packet collisions on the control channel. The use of an omnidirectional out-of-band tone also mitigates the hidden terminal problem. We use the negative CTS (NCTS) mechanism to solve the exposed terminal problem. The throughput performance of the proposed MAC protocol is confirmed by simulations using the Qualnet simulator.
Compared with unicast, multicast over wireless ad-hoc networks do not support reliability due to their inability to exchange request-to-send/clear-to-send (RTS/CTS) and ACK packets with multiple recipients. Although several media access control (MAC) layer protocols have been proposed to provide reliable multicast, these introduce additional overhead, which degrades system performance. A novel MAC protocol for reliable wireless multicast is proposed in this paper. By adapting orthogonal frequency division multiple access characteristics in CTS and ACK packets, the protocol achieves reliability over wireless multicast with minimized overhead.
In this paper we proposed a new MAC protocol to improve QoS(Quality of Service) for real-time traffic in wireless Ad Hoc networks. NMAC protocol have a contention period reservation scheme and a priority control scheme to provide fairness of nodes and QoS. Through simulation, the NMAC protocol compared with existing CSMA MAC protocols shows improvement in performance.
Ad hoc MAC protocols using directional antennas can be used to improve the network capacity. Directional antennas have a Deafness problem and decrease throughput of the network caused by increasing backoff duration. Dual channel protocols have been proposed to mitigate the Deafness and hidden node problems. In this paper, we propose a dual channel MAC protocol using a directional antenna to mitigate the Deafness problem and increase the network capacity. The performance of the proposed Ad hoc MAC protocol is confirmed by computer simulations using Qualnet ver. 3.8 simulator.

Cognitive radio (CR) MAC protocol provides access control of unused spectrum resources without causing interference to primary users. To achieve this goal, in this paper a TDMA based cooperative multi-channel cognitive radio MAC (MCR-MAC) protocol is proposed for wireless ad hoc networks to provide reliable protection for primary users by achieving cooperative detection of incumbent system signals around the communication pair. Each CR node maintains transmission opportunity schedules and a list of available channels that is employed in the neighbor discovery period. To avoid possible signal collision between incumbent systems and cognitive radio ad hoc users, we propose a simple but efficient emergency notification message exchanging mechanism between neighbor CR nodes with little overhead. Our simulation results show that the proposed MCR-MAC can greatly reduce interference with primary users and remarkably improve the network throughput.
In this paper, a new medium access control (MAC) protocol entitled three-phase multiple access with continual contention resolution (TPMA-CCR) is proposed for wireless multi-hop ad hoc networks. This work is motivated by the previously known three-phase multiple access (TPMA) scheme of Hou and Tsai [2] which is the suitable MAC protocol for clustering multi-hop ad hoc networks owing to its beneficial attributes such as easy collision detectible, anonymous acknowledgment (ACK), and simple signaling format for the broadcast-natured networks. The new TPMA-CCR is designed to let all contending nodes participate in contentions for a medium access more aggressively than the original TPMA and with continual resolving procedures as well. Through the systematical performance analysis of the suggested protocol, it is also shown that the maximum throughput of the new protocol is not only superior to the original TPMA, but also improves on the conventional slotted carrier sense multiple access (CSMA) under certain circumstances. Thus, in terms of performance, TPMA-CCR can provide an attractive alternative to other contention-based MAC protocols for multi-hop ad hoc networks.
Self-organizing hierarchical ad hoc network (SOHAN) is a new ad-hoc network architecture designed to improve the scalability properties of conventional 'flat' ad hoc networks. This network architecture consists of three tiers of ad-hoc nodes, i.e.. access points, forwarding nodes and mobile nodes. This paper presents a topology discovery and routing protocol for the self-organization of SOHAN. We propose a cross-layer path metric based on link quality and MAC delay which plays a key role in producing an optimal cluster-based hierarchical topology with high throughput capacity. The topology discovery protocol provides the basis for routing which takes place in layer 2.5 using MAC addresses. The routing protocol is based on AODV with appropriate modifications to take advantage of the hierarchical topology and interact with the discovery protocol. Simulation results are presented which show the improved performance as well as scalability properties of SOHAN in terms of through-put capacity, end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio and control overhead.

In this paper, we propose a MAC(Media Access Control) protocol based on flexible RWT(RTS Waiting Time) for underwater mobile ad-hoc networks with a three-way handshaking mechanism. This protocol can solve a problem of collision between RTS(Request-To-Send) and CTS(Clear-To-Send) packets in existing MACA(Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance) protocol. This proposed MAC protocol is also an effective protocol which can apply to underwater mobile ad-hoc networks in a real field by using implementable technologies. We set flexible RTS Waiting Time called RWT, considering various characteristics of underwater environment. It is possible to support variable network size according to node mobility. Finally, we conduct a performance evaluation between proposed MAC protocol and existing MACA based MAC protocol through practical implementation and experiment. As a result, we verify the superiority of our proposed MAC protocol in terms of throughput, packet drop rate, average transmission time, energy consumption and channel utilization.
